Effects of climate change on the Cree Nation of Waskaganish, Canada

For over 350 years, The Cree community of Waskaganish, located in Northern Quebec, Canada has been consciously managing the ecosystem around them caring for the beautiful forests and mighty rivers of their land. One of the oldest Cree settlement, the Cree Nation of Waskaganish now witness great environmental changes in weather, ice conditions, meat, fish, landscapes and vegetation.
“Call to Action - Climate Change Adaptation in Waskaganish” is a climate change adaptation video produced by the Cree of Waskaganish to portray how the climate crisis is affecting their communities and land.
“Call to Action” is the result of a community-based participatory project that took place in the 2018. During the initiative, the Cree community came together to discuss and to identify appropriate solutions to cope with the impact of climate change and to increase their resilience. This project adopted a participatory approach, that included the training of a local research and video team, interviews with community members, two stakeholder meetings and a community screening event.
The findings and recommendations that resulted from this process are presented in this video as well as a written climate change adaptation plan (available here: www.cngov.ca/wp... outputs serve as a great guide to community members and to other Cree communities on how to start planning and implementing responses that will help to lower the risks associated with present and future climate change.
This video is part of the playlist “Effects of climate change on Cree communities in Canada”. The playlist encloses community participatory videos produced by the Cree communities over the course of 2018. These videos were produced as part of the “Climate Change Adaption Action Plan” strategic project to document the Cree nation’s perspective on the effects of climate change within their land.
