- In this handpan beginner tutorial we explore one of my favourite ways to mix up my jams and break out of the same "right left right left right left right left" cycle that I often get stuck in.
Get creative with it, don't be afraid to experiment!

Very good exercise for Poly rhythm thanks you Amy
Really connected with you, I am 65 and playing music since 1968, majoring in guitar and Native American flute. You have a nice approach and I’m grateful for your time and help in this journey ☝🏻
My sentiments as well 👍🏼
Hello from Germany, I just wanted to say thank you very much, I've only owned my handpan for 4 weeks and I've already learned so much from your videos. I once played drums many years ago and now I find my way back to music, with that wonderfull instrument . You explain everything really well. I hope for many more tutorials from you. Thanks for spendig your Time teaching us ❤️
I'm so glad I found you! As so many have said in other comments, I'm loving your teaching style, energy, and personality. Thank you!!!
Your lessons are the MOST helpful, very clear and concise. I'm a musician and harpist, but just started playing handpan. Thanks to you, I'm developing a better understanding and stronger skills. Over the past 2 weeks, you gave me the tools to create new pieces I can actually play!
You really know your stuff about music composition. I fully agree with all your concepts. Not too many people understand the importance of silence in music. The rhythm and pattern of silence is very important.
Of all the tutorials I've tried, your tutorials make perfect sense. It's harder to learn a new discipline in your 40s and 50s! Thank you!
This is great! I was taught middle eastern percussion a few decades ago.. by a strict Egyptian traditional teacher. Your emphasis on consistency of tone between hands and slow addition of variations is SPOT ON to getting basics of an instrument so that real progress is possible. Thanks!
Omg
You can’t believe how much you motivate me
You are the reason why Im going to be buying a hand pan!!!🥺thanks for the great content!
Amy, I love your style of teaching. I'm doing David Charriers master the Handpan course which I enjoy but I myself yearning for prettier rhythms to learn... and in you I've found them. x
Awesome, thanks Toni. I've found MTH to be really useful for learning the skills needed to find more creativity. I took David's essentials course a few years back, and of course it can only take you so far.
I'm glad my videos are a good companion! ☺️
Starts off so simple but the way you break down the progression is amazing. Definitely going to practice this technique, i feel better already 😇
Thank you so much for your great work!
You break the exercises down so beautifully in terms of speed and simplicity that even beginners can understand how it works and how to practice it.
So valuable!
Wishing you all the best!
Thanks so much for this lovely feedback ☺️ I'm glad you are enjoying the video
Hi, I’m getting a hand pan next week and was looking for inspirational and constructive help. I really like your way of showing and teaching. Super helpful.
Thanks Julian. Welcome to the handpan club! Hehe
Hey, THANK YOU sooo much for your help. I've been working on this video of yours for a few days now. The feeling of my mind breaking away from normal behavior is truly magic. THANK YOU
Love the sound of your touch on these beautiful instruments. Thank you for teaching the world a nicer way of spending time...in meditation. ☯️🙏🏿
You’re an absolutely wonderful teacher! Thank you!!! 💜
Thank you Amy for your patience and pace of teaching. I played right left for many years on a Djembe. loved it but all loud and power which really enjoyed therapeutically but now ready for a new start. My Handpan arrives next week a D Celtic and getting warmed up on my desk mat ready. Your style of teaching is ideal for me a real beginner in musical sense as have no idea of notes etc. As head into the Winter months and our tourism business all but closed this is the perfect tonic, so from a 68yr old I say a warm thank you.
Hello form Italy, Thank you for this tutorial, very best tutorial, i play form 20 days and this bring me to next level!
You taught me, for what I was looking for, amazing, thank you so much 😊🦅 I always wondered how to get the beat and the percussion into the song. After teaching myself with pattern tutorials and exploring around them, I now have the knowhow to level 🆙
Amy I just love your videos and everything you are doing for us beginners :)
I love your teaching method....simple, calming and very motivational!!! Thank you! I just subscribed to your channel ❤
Wow..... Great class.... I'll be following your classes in the future !!!! I'm becoming a better player because of classes like this !!!!
Wow, this was the most helpful lesson I've seen so far about this subject. Thank you!
I am agree ! She us the best teacher on CZcams for handpan lesson
I have never had the pleasure in understanding to its full potential, an amazing inspirational instrument. Thank you. Kind regards Ale
Wow Amy! Like so many others I'm sure I will watch & use this video many times to get better at playing on auto pilot. Just the guidance we needed. Thanks!!!!!
Thanks as always Doran ☺️
I just bought my handpan and I am very grateful I found your videos. It’s amazing how you teach, I really love your kindness and patience, especially for the new beginners like me. Thank you very much 😊
The most effective learning tools I have come across on the handpan made it so much more understandable the way you have set it up, it’s fun ,steps to practice flow ,it’s just a beautiful approach …nice and easy …you make it user friendly one could say thank you thank you
Wow Amy ! That's really a great tutorial. It's not too complicated to play for having a gorgeous result very quickly. Thanks for this lesson.
Dear Amy, this tutorial is just genius! Tonight I have understood so much looking at it and! Thank you so much. You’re such a wonderful musician and teacher 🤗🥰🤩
I like this intuitive way of making music so much! Thank you!
I like a lot how you play and how you teach. THANK YOU, Im learning a lot
I’ve only had my hand pan for a few days but have made huge milestones thanks to your videos 🖤 I appreciate the help 🖤
Awesome!!! Thank you ☺️
Dear Amy...
Thank you for "everything!"
May i ask, what is the particular instrument model you are playing
in this video?
Thank you so much for breaking it down to small pieces. Very helpful!
I did not know that I was doing this technique all along by myself. And Amy you confirmed this for me. So awesome. So simple. No need for joining class that teaches set notes written for one to ‘get’ the hand of it. I think your style will rhyme with those who want to approach playing the Handpan calmly, intuitively, and with a little sound sense as you have shown us. I’m a Subscriber to your channel and will certainly like to listen to your beautiful but simple playing style. I completely connect with you because it feels the best way to playing the Handpan.🥰
Thank you friend! I love my handpan. I hope to get one with more notes soon ♥️
Hi just got my first handpan today and just found your videos today so a good day was had thank you
Welcome to the handpan gang! Woo!
Thank you Amy this is such a fantastic blend of demonstrating practice and explaining how and why. I have a question-- what scale is this handpan? what are the pitches?
Hi Amy,
Just want to say thank you for the great videos for this amazing instrument.
I know that next year in July you will be at the in Austria as a handpan teacher.
Really looking forward to meeting you there in person and having lessons with you. 😊
Started playing handpan almost 2 years ago, although I never played an instrument before.
Playing is helping me to get over the loss of my brother who passed away recently.... 😢
Kind regards,
Timo
Thank you, you're a great teacher. The strange thing is, as a guitar player I actually started with this technique and have to really practice the left right left right technique.
Unbelievable!! I've started producing some simple yet harmonious melodies thanks to you!! I bought a small panda drum a few months ago but I could just produce some funny sounds. When I came across your video I thought, I'd give it a last try. And here I am playing... right from the first attempt! Oh, Amy, thank you so much!! You're amazing!! Thank you! Thank you!! 🌹
Another great tutorial, Amy, love it! I have finally gotten my handpan and am starting to get familiar with it. Moving around the tone fields, playing with the ding, talks and spaces, feeling goofy and excited at the same time, haha! Will add this exercise to my routines, I am sure it will benefit us all, who play this beautiful instrument! Thank you so much for your down-to-earth way of teaching and for sharing your knowledge so openly for us all! xoxox :)
Feeling goofy and excited at the same time haha, that's the BEST feeling. Welcome to the handpan family, I'm excited for you 😁
You're an amazing teacher. Very likeable, clear, fun & knowledgable. THANK YOUUUUUUuuuu
Enjoy your teaching ways, by far the best HPan teacher, really love your approach, in some way I connect with you, I play much in auto pilot a lot, still need to practice more my non dominant hand, but it's getting better. Thanx mi lady
Thanks so much!!
Fantastic Lesson! Thank you Amy. I am now following and learning with your lessons. Ive been playing for about 5 years and this lesson was one of my favorite of all time and easy to follow and replicate with success.
Amazing! Thank you so much
Just stumbled upon this, and I'm grateful I did. I've been listening to handpan music while I do my computer work and hoping maybe someday I could get one. That may not happen, but seeing you explain this provides me with an opportunity to listen to the music more deeply and appreciate what I am hearing with more detail.
Thank you!
非常喜歡妳的影片 有趣又直覺的學習方式 而且正巧在我想知道如何把左右手分開演奏時 這影片出現在我面前 最美好的方式 來自台灣的祝福 :D
Really like your video so interesting and instinct way to learn and this video show in front of me while I just wondering how could I play with my both hand separately The best way from Universe Best wishes from Taiwan :D
Excellent, thank you very much ... I am applying your instructions step by step, they are very good. Greetings from Brazil ⚘🍀🙏
Hi Amy, it is so beautiful, thank you for teaching everything so nicely and kind. I want to learn how to play handpan. Do you know one good can I buy, please? But, couldn't be expensive because, I will start. Thank you!
I'm really loving this video. I love that you mention space. Too many new players don't realize that space is needed. Thanks for the video.
Space is the most important thing in music!! Thanks Cathy 🥰
You give great overall advice at the same time as teaching a cool technique. Thanks a lot!
I appreciate that! Glad you're enjoying
great video Amy, I need to give this a try i struggle if i count but i think the repetition of these exercises could be useful for me
Once you've really internalised that rhythm and got that dominant hand going, you don't need the counting so much. Like you say, repetition and get it in your body 😊
Thanks!
Hi Amy, Thank you very much for your wonderful videos - I am a beginner and I love the way you teach… please Tell me, what is for a type of handpan, which you Play in this Video ? Í´m going to buy a handpan for for me… Greetings from Germany 😉🙏🏼
Finally, I am able to produce something that doesn't sound so disappointing. Thank you so much, I was slowly starting to think about giving up.
Yessss never give up! It's just about shifting perspective

Thanks again Justin! Appreciate it ☺️
Hi Amy, I'm fairly old and musically inept but I do love the sound of these things. After watching your vid I took the plunge and bought a tongue pan (it was what I could afford). I'm now looking forward to it's arrival and annoying everyone in earshot.
Your words ring true for me. I will be following right behind you as well . I’m looking now for a pan .
Enjoy !
Amazing! I hope you enjoy it
I love getting lost in the musical trance and my hands just do their own thing like they got a mind of their own and it all just flows. 😌👍
Superb … so beyond explained… can you pls help me where can I get the best Handpan form …? That will be great help … thanks

OMG Amy Naylor !! This is so cool ! Thank you !!! Taking a summer break from courses , and really love the potential of this to just relax, and groove away my days on a handpan voyage of discovery. ha ha
Thanks Paul! Yeah, this is a really good one to just get lost in
@@AmyNaylorMusic Hi Amy. It turns out it took me till now, a year later, to really get this deceptively simple (for me:) auto pilot figured out. So many things to learn.... I found I needed to write out the notation to get it into my head, and not be frustrated in keeping it all straight . If you are interested in having it , let me know . Not perfect (hand written), but it works for me . Thanks again for all you have shared .
Thank you. Some time is better to remember to follow a path and not running wild in a field. Good for prevent frustration. Thank you Amy 😊
Hehe, sometimes it's good to take short field detours too 😝
Best tutorial ever , Thank you so much !🥰☘️♥️
Thank you so much for sharing Amy. I'm so enjoying your tutorial
This is really helpful. I just got a Handpan and this gives me a great place to start. I subscribed to your channel.
What a perfect teacher!
Hi thank you so much for the tutorial videos. Where did you buy your hang drum from?
This is from Aciel handpan. I now predominantly play meridian handpans
@@AmyNaylorMusic Thank you for the response. I am a total beginner. Which handpan should I buy to start with?
Love it!❤
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼🕊️✨
Awesome Amy! Thanks for this great tutorial and wonderful technique. Very well explained, as usual.
Thank you!
Thank you so so much your an angel 😇 your instructions are so easy to follow so excited to start playing
Thanks!
This was incredibly helpful! Thank you!
Thanks Kyle! I'm glad
Wow, Amy, after trying to buy a handpan for many years have just managed it! Starting your tutorials and fingerscalready want to fly. Christopher
Wahooooo!!
Hello. I follow you from Turin Italy. I am not a musician and I have a hard time learning. I just started. I don't know english ... I use the translator. I hope to succeed thanks to you.😍
Yay, I can do this 🥳🥳🥳 (well, slowly 😹). It's not too difficult and it sounds reeeallly great 😊 Thanks very much.
Yesssss!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
This is so motivating Amy..Perfect teacher 🤗. Thanks
Thank you 🙏
very good tutorial!! Thank you!!!! will practise that daily from now on!!
Awesome! Thank you. Happy practicing!!
What hand pan are you using in this video? Are there handspans you recommend for beginners? And keys?
Thank you for such great videos!
This is a D Kurd from Aciel handpan. For beginners I recommend a D Kurd or a D Celtic, and I recommend finding a maker as local to you as possible, that you also like the sound of. Here's an easy guide: www.masterthehandpan.com/handpan-makers-directory
Wow thanks Amy for this technique ! It looks like so easy when you play, but it is weird in my brain when I add my second hand between the autopilote 😅 But it's very nice when you play so I want manage to do this too ☺ Even if it's slow 😬
Yes, it's surprisingly difficult to have two hands playing two different things at the same time, moving in different directions. There's a lot going on! Happy practicing 😁😁
Thank you very much for this teaching!
Love your teaching approach!
Thanks Elaine!
You're incredible at teaching, thank you
OMG! I was teaching myself and improvising almost exactly the same kind of thing at the same time you posted this 😮😮😮🤩🤩🤩 I could prove it as I filmed myself to remember the melody!!! 😮😮🤩🤩
Hahaaa no way! Synchronicity. It's amazing when that happens
@@AmyNaylorMusic I know right! Just sent you the vid on fb so you can see for yourself ! Hope you agree it’s so similar!!
@Sam Sam awesome!!! We both started our posts with OMG!! 😮🤩 I wonder if our jams were the same 🙃
These lessons have been so helpful, thank you!
Thank you! I'm glad
Thank you this is so helpful and clear! Agree with you around leaving space… so excited to call in my hangdrum!
Is this a d kurd 10 note? I do not own one yet but I seem to be drawn to celtic but this sounds awesome too.
It is, the Kurd and Celtic are very similar, only one note difference. The Kurd is a little more versatile 😊
@@AmyNaylorMusic oh really? In what way? U can do more with the kurd? What tips would u give someone who is thinking of buying one. Its been suggested i should go for a 8 note. I do like the sound of the celtic tho.
OH MY GOD THIS WAS SO HELPFUL. I have been playing (on and off, finally ON ON ON now since I got my Flow pygmy 19) for 3.5 years now and this was the most helpful instruction/tutorial/demo I have ever seen! I picked it up immediately and it really boosted my creativity and ability to play something interesting and varied off the cuff! Thank you so much. I will check your other videos too. Do you do private lessons
Thanks so much! I'm glad it was helpful. I'm not currently taking students for private lessons, but my zoom classes and 1-1s will resume again in autumn/winter time
This is an excellent (well-done and useful) teaching. Thank you.
such a satisfying Groove Amy ..thank you x
Thanks for the awesome tutorial ♥️
Thank you! Always a pleasure 😁
One of the best tutorials what i have found on CZcams! 👍
Thanks and Regards from Deutschland
This might sound a bit strange but your sequence around the 9.30 mark reminds me a lot of the dancing scene from a knights tale, got that same sort of energy I can't describe really.
I don't have a pan but came across this in related vids, do like your methods, if I can ever afford one i'll be back a fair bit I imagine.
It's odd, i'm completely NOT a music person but in these instruments theres a whole healing harmonic qi gong flow thing going on with this instrument, it also seems to me that with these instruments there is a higher level of personal expression compared to other instruments which typically more structure based. if that makes sense
I enjoy this very much. Thank you Ami for sharing this beautiful lesson.
