Collegium 1704 is shaping up to be historically remembered as one of the greatest orchestras of the late 20th and 21st century. They go to all these places, Versailles and the Church of Churches, Saint John Lateran. More power to them.

@@leodepuydt308 non mi interessa rispondere a questo commento sarcastico, né a fare la classifica di quale musica sia migliore. Da anni sostengo che la musica francese sia di pari livello a quella di altre nazionalità benché in molti ambienti sia snobbata, ovviamente continuerò a farlo.
@@alessandrodepoi5868 Modern western music is Italy's gift to the world if one studies history carefully. Somebody had to be first. Newton discovered the laws of gravity and as Lagrange (both French and Italian) said, you can only do it once. Earlier French music is not bad. But what is good in it is learned from the Italians. At the pinnacle of splendor, the court of Versailles under Louis XIV needed a most splendid composer. Oh no, not an Italian. When that other great French baroque composer, the great Rameau, became 60 or so, he confessed to a priest that, if he could be young again, he would travel to Naples and compose in the manner of Pergolesi. I am not making this up.

Quelle vision ridicule des gens qui écoutent de la musique ! Le publiciste pense être efficace en proposant en aveugle, en plein morceau de musique, ses messages d'un optimisme gluant.

Voix d'hommes insignifiantes, diction hésitante et pâteuse; chanter du latin doit être simple pour des Français: dommage! Quand au reste c'est du Lully semblable à lui-même, hélas peu imaginatif ! On attend du nouveau de BIBER?

En effet. Je tiens l'hypothèse selon laquelle quelque chose n'allait pas. L'on n'a pas seulement l'impression d'être à l'écoute de nouvelles compositions de Lully ou de Biber, mais également d'un orchestre tout autre que Collegium 1704. Ce n'est pas seulement le naturel du latin qui manquait, mais également celui du baroque. Bref, j'y pers mon latin.
Les voix masculines sont plutôt banales, mais la prononciation est correcte pour l'époque. C'est du "latin gaulois". L'orchestre est excellent, et les enfants chanteurs sont également sublimes. Dire que Lully se ressemble est un peu inutile. Bien sûr que oui... c'est Lully.
Vous en parlez comme si vous le compreniez, c'est dommage que vous critiquiez une si belle prestation...
I understand that this post is supposed to be critical. Nothing wrong with being critical. It happens. But I am not sure what is being said. I am an academic and a latinist. There is supposed to be something wrong with the Latin. Everybody knows that e.g. "heaven" in Latin (caelum) is pronounced something like kailum in classical Latin and something roughly like shalum in medieval Latin and beyond. By universal consent, it is pronounced the latter way in singing. That is because the composers pronounced it that way when they wrote. Anyhow, you say that it should be simple for someone French to pronounce Latin. Not quite. It requires some careful attention. But nothing that can't be done right. The choir is French and the singers may be Czech. I do not hear any mispronunciations of the Latin. Do you? In sum, I can't quite make any sense of this post. The diction is also said to be pateux "pasty." But so are croissants. Yummie!
