My Dad owned one my mom ended up with it after my Dad past in 1974. It disappeared after my mom past in 2015. My Dad inherited it from his great uncle in 1924. Great gun.

I bought one of these years ago it has RCMP stamped on the bottom of the grip with a metal ring on the bottom. It’s in great shape- I paid 150 bucks for it.

Always have been a fan of all Colt guns. I have a New Service 5" in 38 Spl made in 1933, it has the hardest double action trigger pull of any of my handguns. Single action trigger pull is nice.

Love the old blued steel revolvers. The Colt New Service in 38special has always eluded me, mostly due to price. Wish I had one!
The only Colt New Service I ever got to handle was back when was working as a police officer and a criminal was carrying one with bad intent, and I placed him under arrest and confiscated the revolver and placed it into evidence. It had most of its finish worn off, but it seemed to still be in time, with the cylinder still tight and no discernible end shake or wiggle. I was impressed by the quality of the revolver, and saw that it was chambered in .38 Special and typical of a gun carried by a criminal, had several types of ammunition in the cylinder, but was in good condition for being possessed by a thug. I remember that when we ran the serial number it didn’t return as being stolen, and the detective assigned to the case was unable to find out where the gun came from, so that meant according to our agency rules, (our police chief hated guns and those who liked them) the pistol was doomed for destruction. I was friends with the detective in charge of the evidence room, and was very sad when he had to go to a steel mill in a neighboring town and oversee the mandated destruction of this and a bunch of other guns. Our chief refused to sell confiscated guns to get money for our agency, preferring to take satisfaction in having them melted down. Guns that were surrendered or confiscated and became the property of the PD all suffered the same dismal fate. I saw many trash guns and many valuable collectibles all go to the steel mill for destruction. It used to tick me off as much as it pleased the chief. I have always wanted a Colt New Service in .38 Special (with a four inch barrel, just like the one I placed into evidence) ever since then.

During the Boer war, the Canadian Army purchased New Services in .45 colt, since they already had Colt 1878 in 45 colt in inventory. During the first world war the Canadian and British militaries bought 10s of thousands of Colt and S&W revolvers in .455 Webley due to shortages of Webley revolvers up until 1916. Post war the RCMP bought Colt New Services in 45 Colt and .455 Webley as their new sidearms and used them until the 40’s and 50’s when they replaced with .38 special S&W K-frames.
This revolver piqued my interest, so I went on Gunbroker to see what they're selling for. Yikes. Probably not a good idea to be constantly shooting that one!
