My two pennies on the topic of next England manager... Southgate has been the most successful England manager for some time, partly due to the structure and strategy behind the scenes with the "identity" that has been instilled in players through the age ranks and into the first XI. When he steps down, we need to go back to the drawing board and create a new strategy for the next 10-15 years and then pick a manager that fits the philosophy, as happened with Southgate. Lee Carsley has had a really successful 3.5yrs with the u20's and u21's (won the Euros last summer if anyone's forgotten) so I think that's a good place to start.
This makes a lot of sense. An experienced youth coach with a great coaching style, who knows the players is ideal.
Southgate is the best manager England has had for 50 years for that reason. He’s known the players for over a decade and there’s genuine trust.

Alan mentioned in the last podcast that Terry Venables took the England squad to Hong Kong in 1996 and played a friendly against China. Don’t know if you know this but in the summer of 1998 Terry, as the then Crystal Palace manager, brought 2 Chinese players to English football - Fan Zhiyi and Sun Jihai. Wondered if any of you have any fond memories of them 2 or if any Chinese players at all? Would love to hear that! ( Especially from Micah as I believe Sun Jihai was the regular starting right-back before Micah’s time at Man City)

It's more frustration when a country calls up an in injured player or player just coming back for injury. Like Egypt with Salah & Robertson for Scotland against the clubs wishes. Then they get injured again or sets back their recovery by weeks. Especially when it's meaningless friendlies
Gary Oneill captained England at all levels up to U21s. He was an good player with a good career working under coaches he learnt a lot from. (Wally Downes had a good influence on his career, I know).
His coaching career ladder is varied and steady - and successful.
He's perfect for the England Job - progressive, modern, passionate , and not a Yes man.

I don’t like the fifa rule allowing players to choose nationality.
I think once the player is 18 he needs to choose which country he would like to represent should he be called up one day.
In the case of Rice it’s disrespectful to Ireland, they were his second choice. As soon as England called him up he suddenly felt English.
So many Brazilian players do this as well.
Karin Benzema even gave an interview stating that he is French for football but otherwise Algerian.
Things like that don’t sit well with the fans.

I know he has not had the best of seasons with Chelsea, but he is still a very good player that frightens defenders and has not let England down, and has big game experience. Why is he not getting a look in, despite Grealish being injured, and do the guys - Alan, Micah, and Gary - agree that he should be picked? If not, why not?
