- Hannah and I head back to BlueSky Designs - www.blueskydesigns.us/ - to get my chair fitted for a Mount’n Mover. With the help of this incredible device, I can now raise and lower my joystick with the push of a button. For 10+ years, I’ve been unable to independently access my joystick, meaning I’m basically stuck wherever I park. Now, I’m able to move, park, and move again to my heart’s content, which has given me a huge boost in independence. I’ve only had the device for about 24 hours as of writing this, but I can tell already that my new ability will open countless opportunities for me.

Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah is a senior at Carleton College, studying sociology and anthropology. She works as a researcher for an educational consulting firm. Her future aspirations include attending law school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for 3 years and living together in Minneapolis for a year. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
Am I the only one that loved the fact that Hannah held the back of Shane’s head when driving and making a turn? ❤️❤️❤️
She always does
I think it was pretty clear she was driving pretty aggressively trying to be on time.
I don't think so. Hannah drives safely. Any turn can be hard for Shane to manage, she often supports his head on any journey.
I totally noticed how hannah held his head... it looks so automatic and natural she probably doesn't even realize she's doing it. Always watching out for him ♡♡♡♡♡
I know right its sooo cute! And it definitely does seem second nature for her to do it without thinking! 💞 I love how much love and care they have for eachother its blatantly obvious.
Wow Shane is holding his head up so great!
I have really noticed a big difference since the spinraza.
Yes! And the movement of his head and his speech have improved very noticeably!
I know! And he moves his head better on his own!
Hah, I had imagine it moving quickly and was sure it would smack him in the face. I'm glad to see he'll have time to get out of the way.
I noticed that too! So awesome!! 🙂
“What is my hair doing?” -Shane in EVERY video😄
Got to love him 😂
hahaha.....& he said, ' u let me out of the house like that'! hahaha.....
I heard they are going to split up so sad
He's a real youtube beauty guru 😂
Man of god do u know why, if it is true.
pretty awesome seeing three female engineers/designers at BlueSky Designs helping out Shane!
#femaleengineers. 😉 love it!!! 💕
Women in STEM fields are awesome!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_STEM_fields
THOSE ARE SOME COOL WOMEN ♡♡♡
why don't you type of people rejoice when men become teachers or nurses? 🤔
@@leangroundbeef2322 Men are more likely to dominate these fields. My orthotist is a woman.
I’m 22 and I’ve always been confined to a electric wheelchair because I’m unable to walk. Your videos are so inspirational to me. You’ve made me look at my disability in a completely different way . The strength that you two have helps me block out the negative thoughts I have about life and made me see that it is full of possibilities. Huge respect and thanks from me here in the uk. :)
You should alway's be happy about who you are and love your life. We are all different in our own way, even if we are disabled our life matter's too. I wasn't born disabled but I've been disabled since 1998 and I've learned to love life with my disability.
Hannah’s mad driving skills: protects necks, passengers, and smart phones - all while arriving early!😂
AND still vlogs
~Holds his head/fixes his head as they drive~
Melted my heart. ❤
Shane you look so healthy you're such a good dude
Hi from New Zealand,89 yr old and love your story, will be following from now on.
Regards from Arnie Laird
It looks like those injections are really helping you a lot Shane!! So happy for you two!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰
I am so showing this clip to the Girl Scouts. Female engineers!!!!! I'm happy for you Shane. Their combine knowledge will improve your life. I am impressed to no degree. Well done Blue Sky Designs. Well done.
Needleworknut please watch videos of Jim Nduruchi

Tiffany & Co. hires mostly female engineers. They are manufacturing engineers, mechanical engineers, design engineers and others. So if you want to be an engineer and work for the world's best maker of bling (with the BEST employee discounts) that would be something to look at. The engineering dept. is mostly located in Rhode Island.
The way the two of you spend the majority of your time together smiling, makes me smile. Total relationship goals. 😁
Hi Shane, I'm a 17 year old girl named Rylie I also was born with Muscular Dystrophy, I have a different form called merosin deficiency. Anyways I've been really interested in writing. I know you've written a few books, so I would love to talk to about writing and any advice you have, it would mean so much.
Love, Rylie Carpenter
Hi Rylie! This is awesome. Please send me an email; I’d love to discuss writing with you :)
@@SquirmyandGrubsOh my gosh Thank you so much! I didn't think you would respond! I actually have sent you an email about a week ago, I can send another one if you would like?
My ex mother in law had a rare form of muscular dystrophy. It was like muscular myopathy or something similar.
spoonie love ♥️♥️♥️
Rylie Carpenter did he ever respond? If you don’t mind my asking
Hey
Shout out to the women engineers for their gift of knowledge and their heart to help out ❤️🙏
If the engineers were men their knowledge would be useless and disgusting.
The things we take for granted..this is so cool, Shane and we are happy for you! Game changer! 😉👍
I know. I'm physically disabled myself, and I'm able to do quite a bit more than different disabled people I see. It just makes me realize how much I should appreciate even small things I can do.
@@sweetluvgurl Shane has such an attitude of gratitude! We can all learn from him. Our kids are the same way- they just seem to appreciate things so much more than most. God bless you, Alisha! ❤
"Thank you, assistant". LMFAO. Shane creeping down the hallway in his wheelchair is like reverse "Misery". XD
Hahahhahaahahaa I love this comment!
I love that Shane doesn't like to be late. Being on time is an easy & important quality, that I teach to the students in my leadership class. I'm sooo glad for further independence for him, with the adaptions to his chair.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 And btw... I actually really like your hair in this video! It's rather hip & current.
I would rather be early than late anytime, if your early you can take your time getting inside. I was alway's early for class in college, it's a good way of getting the right seat that you prefer.
I knew Shane would say yellow first. Because he is so sunny! I am so thankful technology can be used to improve someone's life. ♥️ y'all!
also how cool to see a room of women engineers working on this!
THE CHARIOT VII she said 3 words. You’re the one going off on a weird tangent..? What’s your point here?
annie lotochinski he’s literally demented and illiterate and probably a Russian robot anyway
How sexiest, why are you surprised by female engineers?
I sincerely hope this new gizmo does wonderful things for Shane’s ability to navigate his environment. Wishing the Spinraza would give Shane more strength! Love you guys!
I am fairly new to your channel and I have enjoyed watching the videos. You all make such a great couple/ team. I am an Occupational Therapist and also a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist. I work primarily with people who need specialized equipment to drive. I have seen many clients with SMA along with many other disabilities. I have never commented before on a video but after seeing this I wanted to let you know about a product called a Jaco Arm. It is a robotic arm that is mounted on your wheelchair and you control in with your joystick that you use to drive your chair with. You just hit a switch to switch your joystick from drive mode to Jaco Arm mode. The 2 clients that I have with it have found it to be life changing. 1 client has MD and the other was born without arms or legs. The client without arms can now using the Jaco Arm do things like drink out of a bottle without a straw, picking the bottle up, plugged in her own phone charger and can now independently hit the power door button to go in and out. That is just a few of the things that they both have been able to independently do. Just google Jaco Arm and there are videos on CZcams that show it if you want more information.
theevilsister69 Is there any way we can help fundraise/crowd fund/go fund me for a Jaco Arm for him?
theevilsister69 are you on Twitter? IreneJiggerKeny
That's amazing!!!
You are the first person to post about the Jaco Arm that I've seen. So glad thaat you took the time to comment and mention it. We all know that this piece of tech has been a game changer for Shane.
You both are fun to watch because you blend your sentences into one. The ladies are so smart. The woman with the blue sweater is awesome. Bless Her Heart and Both of You Too.
Watching Shane's vlog makes me realize just how much I take for granted on a daily basis. THANK YOU, SHANE, for showing me how to appreciate life from a different perspective. Your vlogs have changed my life for the better. Thank you!!
Omg! The lengths of time holding your head up....she's just spotting you now...go Shane! This made me smile today 🤗
Lets change the gearing so it moves faster. You can smack someone with it. A nice backhand upside the dome.
Shane kissing his controller at the end had me laughing out loud! I just love technology.
When he carressed it with his face. Lol!
Me too lol hard to imagine life without technology.
You both are so awesome. I'm so happy for you Shane. Have a blessed night.
I had no idea such a simple piece of technology could be so helpful to you.
Y'all just make me so happy. I stop whatever I'm doing when I see my notification. Such a beautiful and raw love that you have for each other. I really respect how neither of y'all try to be someone different for the camera. All my love from Gulfport Mississippi 💜💜
Congratulations regarding improved independence!!!! I'm so very happy for y'all ♥️
This makes me want to create solutions for people!!! Anyone else get that feeling?
YES!!!
My wife is the owner, inventor, and engineer of Blue Sky Designs. She is a "rehab engineer", and does great work!
I can't wait to see Shane scare the crap out of Hannah
wheelz331 ... lol .. me too ... I would love to see the look on her face! 😁
This is a beautiful moment. Thank you for sharing.
Now Shane will be cruising through out the house. Lol
That is so awesome they helped you. More freedom! You guys are an amazing couple. And that was the cutest Hannah holding your head up, Shane, while she’s driving, that’s true love!
Shane, you look like your doing quite a bit better. You both are soooooo awesome! I’m still new to your channel. I’ve been binge watching all your videos! I love them! I have my own struggles. I have stage four cancer at age 35 in my bones....I’m wheel chair bound now. Your videos get me through my chemo sessions! Ty from the bottom of my heart for all the joy and information you give to not only the CZcams community, but the disability and care giver communities!
Always look forward to seeing your videos. Feels like I'm hanging out with my cool friends. Love your smiles, your humor, and banter. Thanks for sharing your time with us.
I love the work that company is doing. It's tailored just perfect to meet your needs. What a wonderful bit of tech! 😊
I love how happy Shane is! This really is cool and I know is going to be such a huge help! ❤❤
Hannah's eye and head movement when she's being Shane and that there gonna be late 3:47. Spot on and too funny! So cool Shane, such a neat invention! Love the laugh when you controlled the switch!!
Happy for you Shane, these ladies are amazing. Love how Hannah holds Shane's head up. God bless you guys love your videos.
“ why’d you let me out of the house like that “ 😂😂
It’s such an awesome learning experience to see the things you both go through. Thanks for sharing this with us!
I have not missed one video over the last few months. You both amaze me by your intelligence, your ability to live life to its fullest and the love you have for one another is heart felt. You are my inspiration.
Thank you both for reminding the able-bodied to not take for granted the simplest abilities, like automatically being able to hold our heads up. You are such an inspiration to so many. Touching lives and making a difference. Thank you both for sharing your life with us!
I actually cried a little. So happy for you. This gives you just that more independence! Celebrate with a cold beer dude! 💕💨
Absolutely fascinating...so happy for you both. Hope this is the beginning of many new awesome advancements to come!!
So so happy for you thats is awesome, I have worked with people with disabilities and to see things that give more independence makes me smile
im so bummed some days and then i watch you guys and my world opens up to laughter and love. you make the world a better place just being here. thank you for these videos so much.
So awesome Shane! I’m so happy for you to have more independence! Now go sneak up on Hannah!
That’s so incredible that Blue sky Designs build that for Shane so he can be more independent which I’d awesome!!!
I discovered you guys while scrolling through my recommendeds on yt a month or so ago. I have 5 close cousins with disabilities and seeing you makes me so happy for the community they are apart of. Thank you for being vulnerable, hilarious and so genuine. Keep it up! Love from Manitoba Canada. P.s. my husband and I went to Minneapolis for our honeymoon in 2014, I know it's not much but it feels good be connected with you guys in that small way.
You people deserve all the hapiness in the world Shane and hannah ♡♡♡ you people literally are a light to a lot of people out there ♡♡♡
Dad here this time. I was SO waiting for your technician to pull out a blowtorch and start shooting FIRE all around like Peter McKinnon and Casey Neistat do! But I hope this video gets a million views anyway because its SO awesome and life-changing!
What an awesome game changer. Great job bluesky!!!
Lol. Oh you two are a joy to watch. You guys warm my heart because you are so down to earth and not drama seeking.
Thank you so much for putting yourself out there! Showing your genuine feelings for one another always fills me up with love and happiness. Thank you for being you!💞
Love it! So happy for you Shane! I'm sure this is coming in super handy
I was lmao when Shane started talking about his joy stick
Kiss my Joystick! 😋
Good to see female engineers on the case. Being a metalworker, my Dad was always coming up with assistive devices for me and my school friends (I was in "Special" education. I was wondering if a surgical collar would help support your neck for car journeys, Shane?
Im so addicted to you both and your energy. You guys never fail to put a smile on my face. Love from the UK
Shane, I am honestly so happy for you. As a person with mobility issues from years with RA, I can understand your excitement when you get a device to make your life easier. You were as excited as most people are when getting a new car. Congrats!
10:54 - "Haha."
Such a simple little thing, a little chuckle, but it speaks such volumes, right? :)
OMG!!! You need to attach a camelback to his chair and run the drink line to the arm and then he could drink whenever he wanted!!!
Misto Grizz shane 100% would want that filled with beer lol
Then he'd have to pee.....
Tara Townley This was my first thought, too. 😂
AwwwSweetieDarling Naww man. One for coffee, one for beer. hahaha
Cool idea!
Wow! I can see this as a start of many devices you’ll have eventually! So excited for you!👍💕
You guys are sooo awesome ! ! I LOVE your videos and immediately start smiling when I see you have posted a video. Literally laughed out loud @ Shane kissing his controller at the end ! ! What an incredibly talented group of women making this happen ! ! Looking forward to more videos ! !
Im so happy for you guys. Also happy for Shane, poor man sits at his computer for hours. 😂 good vid
U guys are great. Have a good day!
I’m so happy for you And it’s awesome the women designed it and it’s always nice to have your independence
That’s incredible! So overjoyed for you to have this life changing addition to your life!
These ladies are amazing!
Yay!! Thid video makes me so happy. Its great to see more female engineers and to see Shane get more independence with this cool technology! I hope it continues to work out for you
I love watching you guys so much I have literally watched every video except the livestreams because of time constraints I have, but I cant wait to see your new videos. I deal with unseen illnesses and you both put a smile on my face. Thank you both for what you do :)
To me the best part of this video was the car journey and just watching the love, care and understanding you both have, the way you held Shane's head in a automatic reflex was joyful to see! X
The clicking. Omg I'm full of laughter I absolutely love you all.
That is so cool and the creators seem so nice!!!!
This is very nice for both Shane & Hannah. I loved how automatic and caring she holds Shane's head while driving.
Shane!! I'm so excited for you. This tech opens up SO many possiblilites for you. I can't wait to see it in action.
That’s awesome, it’s seems such a simple idea but it going to make a huge difference for your independence 😊
Melanie McAulay if you watch the video it shows that Shane is having a motor fitted to his joystick out of the way for himself
It is so cool!!! Awesome help to have 👍. Congrats!
The love i have for her is amazing, shes such a lovely person to shane!! Both of you are amazing
I absolutely love following you two! You seem to always put a smile on my face!
SOOOOO H A P P Y for you Shane!!!! #YayIndependence
Technology is so awesome, so glad you get some more freedom!! Watch out Hannah he’s gunna come streaking into the room lol
This is So Awesome ! Happy for you both 😊💕💕!
Amazing how much more self sufficient you will be now! Such a small thing, but big impact! Love you both :)
Shane's gonna be kissing his new robotic arm controller every time it goes up and down... Can just see it! 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing this video. I'm really into accessible technology.
Ya'll are so beautiful together. Love and Blessings to you both!
This video made me smile. Seeing how nice and awesome the lady engineers were in helping get Shane the mock-up in the same day, blessed. Hannah is just an angel always getting Shane were he needs to be and so so supportive just like any partner should be. Seeing her holding his head and reaching to lift it while driving was so cute. But the best was seeing Shane's smile at the end with his new Independence sick and kissing it. Amazing couple!
Cool hope you like your new retractable joystick love and hug Shane and Hannah
Hannah’s eyebrows are gorgeous. 🙌🏻
I’m so excited for you, Shane!! Your humor made the video, but the new addition is awesome!!
Very rad Shane! I'm super happy for you and your increased mobility. You and Hannah are fantastic and I appreciate all that you do to inspire others and add joy to the world. Too many people go around as victims or on the pity pot, especially fully able bodied folks! Smh. Anyway, you two are also the only ones who make me laugh out loud watching you, so thanks! Xoxo
I absolutely love your relationship!❤️
I love you guys so much. You make my days brighter!! 💜
tamz white yes me too 🥰
This is great! Happy for you Shane!👏
Wow! He’s really looking great! Look how steady he’s holding his head up! ❤️❤️❤️

Shane’s hysterical! Love you and Shane Hannah!!
You both are truly amazing! Shane keep doing what you’re doing, keep her happy and always have fun! I don’t think you are lucky you reeled this one on your own!
So glad you have found that it will help you in so many ways x
