I saw Leslie West open for Foghat back in the mid '70s. He absolutely rocked it. Foghat sucked, the crowd booed them, wanting West to return. Leslie did return a few months later, headlining his own tour by then. He rocked it big time, all over again.

As a native Alabamian and lover of southern rock, I have to say that this song is a little stronger than just southern rock. It is actually the roots of all rock. It is one of the few songs with a hook that you know from the first note like Smoke on the Water, Stairway to Heaven, All Right Now, Highway to Hell, Free Bird and a handful of others that transcend time. You know them immediately.

Certainly one of the heaviest riffs ever recorded.
50+ years later...STILL one of the heaviest!
Like a fine wine, it delights the senses with the delicate, fruity-notes of... oh say a BOC Godzilla, and yet it somehow manages to finish like a provacatively-subtle Sabbath's Iron-Man.
Remarkably, it's somehow tastier than either!

I met the drummer for this band at a tiny little Dive Club in Nantasket Beach Massachusetts. Called the C note. Maybe 10 yrs ago. His name is Corky Laing. I showed up early cuz I wanted to meet him. He was shooting pool by himself. I walked over and I said "hey man do you want to play?" And in the most terrified and disheveled manner you could possibly imagine he jumped up, put the pool cue down and said "I don't know man I was just checking my eyes". didn't see him again until he went on stage. It was him and two girls. one playing bass one playing the guitar and he was singing from behind the drum kit and put on one of the better small venue live shows I've ever seen. But I will tell you right now it looked like never left the seventies.

Mountain was actually a NYC group, as both Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi were New Yorkers, while drummer Corky Lang was Canadian. This song came about when Corky had a party at his place and there was a girl there from Louisiana he had never met. He said he started playing around on his drums, hoping to impress her, and laid down this beat. He said he didn't win the LA girl, but he later played it for Leslie, who wrote the music over it, wrote out some silly lyrics, and voila, a massive hit.
As an FYI, bassist Felix Pappalardi produced Cream's 2nd and 3rd studio albums, as well as their goodbye live album.

Drummer Corky Laing in 1969 - not even a member of the group at that point-
“We were at a funky beach place called 30 Acres in Nantucket [an island off Cape Cod], and because it was so darned hot everyone had their air conditioning on, causing the entire island to black out. A friend of mine was with a drop-dead gorgeous chick. She was from the south and wearing a see-through dress covered in flowers. Knowing it was up to him to keep the show going, Laing launched into a freeform drum solo, bellowing the words ‘Mississippi queen, do you know what I mean?’ repeatedly and hitting a cowbell maniacally - for more than an hour. I just had to keep this chick dancing, I was so turned on by her. But in screaming so loudly for so long I gave myself chronic laryngitis and screwed up my voice forever.”

Love your channel folks...by the way, Leslie West (the singer and guitarist on this song) was born in New York City to Jewish parents so not originally from the South. Keep on Rockin! .

Leslie West was a great guitarist. Huge fat tones, super understated tasty lead playing. RIP to a master.

Long Red is another (but different) song that I have always liked by them. Any number of folks have sampled the opening drum lick from the live version of the song. Nantucket Sleighride (the song and the album) is just killer.

We play this in our band, always fun. I got a BIG cowbell on my kit you can hear across the club.

IMHO this is heavy blues-rock. The lyrics could come straight out of a Muscle Shoals strong blues tune.
Leslie West on vocals and guitar here. Sounding Southern even though he was from NYC and Jersey. Nothing pop-rock here.
Mountain was a cool group. On some other tunes the vocals are from bassist Felix Pappalardi. But this right here is the song they're known for most. Love it.

Great band formed in 1969 in Long Island New York. Check out "Nantucket Sleighride" and they do a great version of "Rollover Beethoven."

Black water is by the Doobie Brothers:). Not a lot of songs are as great as Mississippi Queen. That would be one of them. Different, but you must hear it if you haven’t yet. Leslie West and Mountain. Great reaction!

Southern rock? They were from New Yawk :) Leslie West was a guitar god and a mountain of a man, 350+. An American supergroup but they weren't around long. I had their first album on vinyl. On the cover it said "This record should be played LOUD."

Mountain Live Felt Forum NYC NYE 1973. While playing this song Mountain showed why they were a great TRIO. On every downbeat Drummer Corky Lang would ping his stick off the cymbal aiming it out into the audience. It went were ever he wanted it to go...proving it at the end of the song by pinging it off the cymbal shooting it straight up in the air were it came down and Leslie West the guitar player with out looking catches the stick behind his back...spins it and throws it too the audience. Now that is an ENSEMBLE! A TRIO. They actually had a keyboard player as well on stage (Steve Knight who wasnt credited as part of the band) I got you Corky!😎 Credit were Do!

I was there for this NYE show - I don't remember much EXCEPT for watching the bits of Corky's drumsticks breaking off and flying through the air (the fact that I was also in an "enhanced" state made watching the sticks fly through the air extremely entertaining. Show was amazing but a little too short...they came on at midnight and were done by 1AM. However I'll take an hour of Mountain live over just about any other band.

The best American Rock/Blues band. This was an area that UK bands dominated but Mountain were one of the few really good ones state side.
