In this video I draw a portrait of a woman, in charcoal and white chalk. I start with very rough big mass sketch. I just want to block in the big shapes, Dark and light. Very abstract.
In the beginning, the size and composition of the head are very important.
So stay in this stage as long as possible to get the drawing somehow correct.
I use warm gray toned paper. The benefit of this paper is that I can use it as a skin tone.
The big part of the light shape.
I don't focus at all on details at this stage.
Two values are enough for block-in the big shapes.
My drawing tools for this one,
Rubbing sponge, blunt, soft palette knife, charcoal, and white chalk.
And I also use my fingers.
I try to use 4-5 values for the whole drawing.
From the darkest to the lightest (High Light).
It's critical not to break it down too early,
so you don't lose the overall big shape.
Draw a big shape make it easier to move around the drawing very easily.
Then I work a lot with the edges,
and want to have variations soft and sharp.
The edges most of the time
are very soft.
Charcoal drawing is more like painting in oil,
and you need to add layers of charcoal to get the values and shapes right.
For that purpose, you need to have a better quality paper.
Slightly rough variant.
I work so much with edges.
It is from there the drawing
start getting 3D shape.
I use white chalk for the light shape.
Mark the highlights.
It's very easy to overdo it.
So take it easy with that.
You can blend white chalk and charcoal,
And create a very nice cool mid tone.
Drawing and painting is so much about the art style too.

Thank you. I use three different types of charcoal - hard, soft, and one in between - as well as white chalk.
What paper and/or sketchbook do you use for charcoal drawings?

You should redraw her left eye (right side of the drawing): it’s at the correct height but the right eye is far more long to redraw. Plus you should darken the area on the left of her face (right side again) to remove these weird volumes on the bottom half of the drawing.

The purpose of this video is not to create a super realistic drawing, more about drawing style and diffrent tools i use.
@@Milozandiart Just as a suggestion to you - I think that's really ineffective tactic, to focus on technical details and style, while ignoring the structure of the face. It's obvious from the video, that you not only don't do a preliminary sketch, but don't even keep the 3d structure in mind, you just loosely copy the patterns from the photo. I suppose if you like what you're doing, it's alright. But you're unlikely to make much progress with actual drawing skills this way
@@mariecher Thank you for your comment. When I draw, I sometimes start with a loose style and other times with a more accurate approach. Drawing loosely helps me to freestyle more and express myself in my own unique way. My goal is not always to create a realistic or 100% accurate drawing, but rather to vary my style and be more expressive:)
Using a photo is just an ubject to draw from and its hard to see 3d effect on CZcams even there is 3 to 5 values that creates more realistic.

Just see them as shapes Not eyes 👀 it makes easier to draw them !
@@Milozandiartthat's probably why you don't see how crooked they are :) There's nothing wrong with only looking at shapes, if you can then draw the shapes perfectly
@@Milozandiarttry looking at a small copy of the picture, looking at it in the mirror or from a bigger distance or turning it upside down. You'll see it

@@Milozandiart there's expressive approach of, say, Picasso, and then there's expressive approach which just makes your eyes crooked 😁
If you want to be a picasso, make everything crooked 😁 Just one crooked eye is creepy, not expressive. No offence

Actually, if you look at the jaw line you'll see that the head, in the drawing, has a slight tilt to the left.
While in the photograph the head is strictly vertical.
So, while the eyes are not aligned with the photograph, they are properly aligned with the tilt of the head in the drawing.

When I draw or paint, I usually design a little bit and don't really aim for super realistic portraits. I'm a painter, not a photographer :)

My problem is every time someone tells me they like one of my paintings I take it off the wall & give it to them.

Congratulations, you did a wonderful job. Can you tell me what kind of palette knife you used? I didn't understand if you put a sponge in the tip of the palette knife.

I used a black rounded sponge in the begining and a soft palette knife with a rounded tip for this drawing . Search: panpastell soft palette knife, you will see how it looks like.
