- We've been getting a lot of questions regarding the setup of our N80 HILUX. We've made this video walking through the build and how we've set it up for touring and doing the lap of Aus.
I really enjoy making my own things and we've saved thousands by doing most of the work ourselves.
We hope this video gives you a few ideas for your own touring setup as well as the confidence to have a crack at things yourself.
Apologies for the poor audio, I don't have a mic and this was our first proper video so we'll improve the future ones.
2 things that I forgot to mention on the build was the ProVent 200 oil catch can under the bonnet and the fire extinguisher bracket I made that utilises the front bolt holes of the passenger front seat.

just ordered the 2024 SR - looking at wildpeak tyres the same size that your runing - are happy with them
You won’t regret them mate. I’m still running those same set of tyres in that rig rundown video, 2 laps of Aus later and in 3000kms they will have done 100,000kms. I reckon they’ve still got a good 10-15,000kms left before they need replacing. They’ve been awesome.

got the same ute, and I chose the SR instead of the SR5 for the vinyl floor. makes it so easy to clean
100% it does, so easy to wipe it out when it gets dirty 👍🏼

Thanks for the review Joss & Ell - I’m starting my fitout of a 2010 Hilux dual cab and found a second hand 1800mm alu tray on Gumtree for $700 ($3500 new) and used that saving towards a 1600mm stand off alu canopy from VIC that has the same spec and price as your AP boxes model - bought a lithium battery for true power capacity and weight saving - now wiring in Redarc, Engel, Renogy system components and noted some of your great ideas for the kitchen - still waiting for 23Zero RFT due to Covid shipping delays -John in SA

Great choice going lithium too, worth the extra bit of money. Sounds like it'll be a great setup John, glad you were able to pull a few ideas from our build also.

@@ottouring OK thanks OTT I’ll check them out - in addition to the Darling River run during lock down I’ve returned to SA from a TAS to west QLD Carnarvon Gorge trek and it’s been a great opportunity to work out more changes to my build - I’ve moved all heavy items to the front for better weight management, fully insulated and carpeted now and almost finished wiring looms for dual battery system - I managed to keep all wiring from engine bay to canopy inside the vehicle running it under the plastic skirts including heavy duty battery cables.
Greatest canopy set up I have seen so many great ideas
I really need to know how you attached the carpet pockets if you can share please

awesome setup! exactly what I'm wanting to do with my nav. for audio infront of the camera have a look at the rhode wireless go will bring your production value up just that little bit more :)

Nice setup! Got a good simple 12v setup. How has the inverter held up, are you happy with it had no problems? What appliances do you run of it?
Hey mate thanks heaps! It's worked so well for us. The inverter has been unreal. We usually run our little pop up 240v kettle, pod coffee machine, toaster, charge the laptop and drill batteries. A few times I've ran a circular saw, and even an 1800W drop saw and it still ran it haha.

@@nicholashamblin6856 yeah it's great! Uses probably 4 or 5% of the battery boiling water but doesn't take too long for solar to replenish that. By using the inverter to boil water it makes my gas go further by not having to use the gas stove to boil water 👍🏼

Missed some of your talk the sound was muted as you tend to keep talking while turning your head away from the camera. Very interested in your rear suspension setup, would the addition of an ironman load plus cover your requirements when fully loaded? the trouble with the airbag addition is that when in use it transfers the load to one point on the chassis which is not designed to take that load. You guys have set this ute up really well and given me some good ideas to work on. Loved that water bag behind the back seat.

I looked into the load plus kit but wasn't sure how how it would perform over serious corrugations and how the articulation would go off-road. I wanted something a little more permanent which is why I went a constant load leaf pack. I'm aware of the fact that chassis aren't designed to have the load in one point as it can cause the chassis to crack or bend. That would be the case if the air bag was the only component doing the work however I would say my leaf pack would be doing 70% and air bags are there to 'assist'. If my air bags failed for whatever reason my leaf pack alone would still get me out of trouble. We went over the Gibb River Road and plenty of pretty badly corrugated roads and washouts and never had an issue with the airbags or the chassis 👍🏼
The water bladder is an excellent use of dead space, glad you liked it and got some ideas for your own build 🙂
@@jossandell Cheers for the reply, I only know about the airbag issue because I am looking at putting one in my Hilux. I have a 2019 SR5 and even Toyota says they drive bumpy. So I thought the airbag might mitigate that a bit. I have only recently come around to the thinking of setting up like you have so good to get your ideas, which are right up there with the best I have seen. If you haven't guessed I am a Kiwi so things that work well over there might not be so good here because of weather differences. My rooftop is very similar to yours, I open it to the back so I can work off the tailgate in the annex if it is cold. In my experience on CZcams people like you soon become very good at putting out top-quality stuff so good luck and thanks.

New Zealand is amazing, I did 2 weeks in a campervan there in the South island, it's on my bucket list to take the ute there one day and tour it again in a 4x4.
In my experience they've been an excellent addition to the ute providing you use them correctly and sensibly. I think people have issues with them when they run a standard leaf pack and then run 60psi in the air bags to carry the additional weight. Providing your leaf pack is doing majority of the work, air bags work great.

Hey mate, so it’s really easy, the bladder actually sits on it’s own weight (not suspended) and then I just used cable ties to cable the top to where ever I could (to the seat mounts I think) just to keep it in position and that’s it. Hope that helps 👍
How you liking that water bladder? The back of my collie is too tight on space for a dual battery set up so would be a good use of space
Hey mate, it's been in the ute for a few years now and still working well. It's awesome for the fact that it's pretty slim, holds lots of water and is pretty space saving but even though it's BPA free I cannot for the life of me get the 'bladder' taste out of the water. I think if I had a 12v pump attached to it and ran some sort of inline filter it might eliminate the plastic taste a bit better.
@@jossandell yeah that’s fair, I think it’s a good idea to fill that unusable space. Does it slosh around much when not completely full or empty
@@CJFranciss it definitely is a great use of dead space. Yeah it does slosh a little bit when not full but doesn't really bother me at all. Don't normally notice it that much, only if there's no music playing.
Nice mate! I have a very similar setup but still tinkering and not quite happy yet. Have you got a good system for storing the jack-off legs for big trips? I can fit most of mine in the trundle drawer and then chuck the rest in the storage side of the canopy, but looking for other options.
Thank you Ryan! That's awesome mate you'll get there. I usually take the jack off legs apart and store the top half (heavier part) flat on the canopy floor and store the rest of my gear on top and then I stand the bottom half of the legs up in the canopy and they just fit. With my setup that's the best way I can come up with to fit them haha
How did you manage to fold your back seats forward as it is not a stock feature
I didn’t fold the back seat forward as you can’t with the n80. I just moved the back seat out of the way to mount up the bladder and the when you mount the seat back int position there’s is just enough room for the bladder to be filled.
Does the road chef oven get hot. Resulting in the entire canopy getting hot
Not really actually, definitely doesn’t seem to make the canopy hot, it’s warm to touch on the outside but overall it’s excellent 👍
When I go camping for longer than say 10 days, I have 900mm canopy, bolted on. Where can you get clamps for it?

Thanks heaps mate!! We love it and it works great for us. With the ute fully loaded full of fuel, water, gear, it's right on gvm (3000kgs) so if I were to go all steel for the tray and canopy it'd be way over gvm.

Hi mate, I was just wondering if you have any problems with the front tyres scrubbing when you turn. And if you did what did you have to do to stop the scrubbing.
Hi mate, don't have any problem with scrubbing and didn't have to do any modifying which was good. When I very first put my first set of 32" BFG Ko2's on the ute, they did just make contact at full compression and full lock with the plastic inner guard right at the bottom but only just. Wasn't bad by any means and I didn't have to do anything to fix it, it kinda just wore down the couple of millimetres of plastic it was touching and never did it again.

Just turn it down a little bit haha. Na I think the music is the right level, it's just that I didn't have a mic so my voice is super quiet and when I turned my head away from the camera it was hard to hear. First time doing a video like this so I'll improve it for future videos 👍🏼 thanks mate.
Hello there, may ask what is the particular brand and model of your bullbar, it appears that it seemlessñy fit to the contours of the edge of the fender of your hilux.
Hi there, our bullbar is the Ironman commercial deluxe bullbar. It's a direct bumper replacement and fits really neat 👌
@@jossandell thank you so much for the info. Other bull bars have gaps or appear to be a mismatch as the edges do not match to the contours of the fender.

Thanks heaps mate, no I don't I wish I did though. At work we've only got a little magnabender which struggled to bend the 2mm and 2.5mm ally so I had to score it before I made the folds.
The mudguards were the only thing I didn't bend up myself. The magnabender just wouldn't do it and I didn't want to score it too heavily incase it cracked along the folds so I got my uncle to bend them up on a CNC press brake 👍🏼

Thanks mate, because my ute is a 2017 and is less than 5 years old, I haven't needed to do a pink slip yet (I will have to next year though) but have never had an issue or been pulled up about it. As far as I know it's all legal, I haven't gone any higher than 2 inches in lift and my wheels have gone from a 265/65/17 to a 265/70/17.

@@nathanniclair7246 sweet as that sounds awesome. Pretty positive you'll get away with a 32" tyre and 2 inch lift without any hassles or having to need any engineering certificates etc.

what are your zip tie's holing onto for the water bladder
They're just tied onto the brackets beside where the seat locks into. They're just to keep the bladder it place, they're not bearing any weight at all, the bladder rests on the floor 👍🏼
do you reckon the water bladder could tare or something or is it pretty strong
They're pretty durable, the material is 900GSM. It would only tare if it was running against something sharp repetitively

Thanks heaps mate, we're averaging around 12L per hundred and get around 600kms to a tank. The best we got on our lap of Aus was 630 to a tank before we emptied the 20L jerry can in. I only have the standard 80L tank 👍🏼

Hey man, I didn’t get it at an auction actually. I bought it from a dealership in Homebush. I think pickles auction or greys online often sell ex-government utes and things though.
