@@asherthenee6107 Rowan co. North Central,KY, We moved to Michigan in 1943 ,I was always homesick for my hills! And grandma. Lived in Ohio since 1951 when I got married, never forgot my old KY home.

I'm an old-time music convert, I didn't grow up with the stuff, so I appreciate getting to hear from someone who did --And someone who grew up at a time when the old traditions were really alive (I was born in this century).
Here's a summary of the tunings used in this excellent video (note that the banjo is tuned nearly, but not quite, a half step below A440). 1) gDGCD -- mountain minor (aka sawmill) tuning. Song: East Virginia 2) gDGBD -- standard G major tuning, used here to play in E minor Song: Roving Cowboy 3) gDGAD -- sometimes called "Willie Moore" tuning. Song: Barbara Allen
If hearing buells singing doesnt give you chills you must be dead - its been almost 15 years since i discovered him and im still amazed listening to him
Awesome. I was looking for some info on how to play Butcher Boy, now I've got a tuning and a lotta more info! Plus Barbara Allen, which is another one I love
4) f#DF#AD -- aka "Reuben" tuning. You could really slide into the blue notes on a fretless banjo. Songs: Lonesome Road and Poor Boy Long Ways From Home 5) f#DEAD -- I don't know of any name for this tuning. Mike Seeger used it to play a tune called "Lost Gander." Song: Frankie & Johnny 6) f#BEAD -- aka "Cumberland Gap" tuning. Song: Cumberland Gap
Thanks! I didn’t know he had a banjo book! (Or more accurately, a pamphlet). It’s included at the end of the liner notes for Philip Kazee’s Rounder CD “A Family Tradition.” Found a PDF of that online. That Shady Grove tuning is correct. It also has a breakdown of his picking style, including raking the thumb back over the strings. I never was able to figure that out, but maybe I’ll try again.
