Just to share my experience: For people who are not familiar with computers like me, you will need to use Disk Management (in windows) to format your new SSD before you can see it in your file explorer. Then you need to choose either MBR or GPT to format your disk. This is a more complicated topic, but in short, if your disk is larger than 2TB, use GPT. If you are using an old computer and a smaller disk, you probably want MBR. I am using USFF 9020 and 500GB SSD, and GPT works for me. I should also be able to add more volume to this disk if I'd like to.
9020 USFF - For those interested, the mini pci slot, can handle a msata sdd. It shows as a drive in the bios. And i can confirm the adapter is 12.7mm just fitted one.
Thanks Mxkdi. Video's like these help people to upgrade instead of throw away (juist bought a 9020 USFF second hand).
You're going to need the 12.7 mm thick caddy. Don't buy the 9.5 mm.
Indeed, the original model seen in the video is the DS-8D9SH that is a 12.7mm dvd drive
thanks Mark!
Thank you! Had been looking for this for months until I found your video.
Hi, thanks.
Short sweet and to the point. Been looking for something like this. Thank you.
Would I need to uninstall the optical drive before disconnecting it?
Hi, no all you have to do is disconnecting power and SATA cable before removing optical drive.
@@mxkdt Thank you for the response. Much appreciated!
scratching my head here but, why ditch the rom drive when you can add an M.2 ssd instead? these models have that slot on MB
would we loose any data during this because i have games installed on the extra hardrive?
Thanks for this 👍 I have a 9010 usff and was thinking of replacing the power supply.. do you know if this can be done?? If yes, what kind of unit would be recommended?
if I’m not mistaken, the power supply on your USFF is Dell’s own proprietary unit. you could find one for sale from a refurbisher or scavenge the part from a donor box.
The drive shows up in the bios but isn't showing up in my computer as storage. Is there something that needs to be done to recognize the drive?
You will need to format it
Open disk management in Windows so you can format the drive.
@@7mattman1 Thank you! This is very helpful for me
Can you add a 2nd SSD without using the optical and getting rid of the DVD drive??
I don't think that's possible unless you replace the WiFi card to a wifi card to sata connector but the problem is that there is no extra power cable for the SSD unless you use what the video tells u to do.
But if you have a full desktop tower than it's 100% possible.
With this method what is the size limit for the drive. Should we keep what the manual says? (500Gb 7200rpm) or can we mount a larger drive eg 2 Tb?
Hi, yes you can install larger hard drive 2tb.
Thanks mate... keep on rolling...
Dell A790 usff CD Drive is 9.5mm or 12.7mm..?
You rock dude! Thanks
Hi, thanks Happy Holidays...
Much appreciated.
Hi, Happy Holidays...
Where did you get the hard drive caddy? Are they generic? Or is this specific to Dell?
Hi, yes they sell them online and it is generic.
Optical Bay 2nd SATA HDD Hard Drive Caddy CD DVD-ROM For Laptop NoteBook 9.5mm
They are mostly generic. Google the part number to get results from Amazon, Ali Express and Ebay. Part number 94-01001-002
Mxkdi, the “Optiplex 7010 Technical Guidebook” lists the optical drive’s dimension as 12.7mm. from a glance, the caddy unit you installed in this video does appear to be the thicker model.
The original hardrive in it.. is it 2.5 inch size?
Hi, yes
I bought one of these caddys but the retaining bar (2:53) was missing. Any ideas of what can I use in place of it?
Maybe use a little foam?
Thanks for the suggestion ~ I ended up just using the screws and it was secure enough. The computer doesn't get moved around at all, and it's been fine.
I upgrade cpu from 4590S to 4790S.😊
Do you know how to get wifi working on this?
하드디스크 설치할려다가 전원케이블쪽이 안맞아서 고민중이었는데 노트북 ODD용 가이드 쓰는게 답이군요..
Hi, thanks for the info
Hi friend..i have ussf..just bought last week.Since ussf is too small to install GPU..is it possible to use "mini pcie - GPU Riser extender" to make external GPU for my ussf?sorry for my poor English.
Same, I also plan to do like you but with mining riser.
Can I get HDD + SSD and keep the dvd rom?
12.7 or 9.5 mm caddy for 7010 USSF?
It's 9.5 mm! If you Google the part number that's shown in the video(94-01001-002) all results are for 9.5mm.
Mauricio Lazo, look up the “Optiplex Technical Guidebook” online for system specifications: the dimensions of the optical drive are given as 12.7mm so you should need the thicker caddy.
Hi, i have a dell 7010 sff (the smallest case) which graphics card fits and can play overwatch well?
that is for the SFF, this is the USFF version of the 7010
@@cyberfunk6699 did you end up finding a graphics card that fits?
find the low profile graphics card
What the size of the caddy
9.5 mm
find the “Dell 7010 Technical Guidebook” online and look on page 39- the optical drive’s dimensions are given in the first line. you’ll need the 12.7mm caddy.
wlan mpcie.. egpu compatible?
