For anyone interested, Dave failed in his attempt to open a bank, but refuses to accept the truth. All the experts etc kept telling him he can open a Credit Union (which is nothing more than Savings and Loans), but that he would never get to start a bank. He wouldn't accept that and kept on trying to be a bank. In the end, he got certain important pieces of paper and framed them, saying "This, this, and this, means we are now...a bank!" No current accounts, no direct debit facilities, no debit cards, no credit cards, no cheque books, no mortgage facilities...all you could do when he opened up the branch, is pay into a savings account (in cash only, at the branch) or take out a loan. In other words...a Credit Union. Also, he is not allowed to called his business Bank of Dave, or even Bank of anything...he is not allowed to use the word Bank in his company title because that would imply that it really is a bank, when it isn't. He got around that by putting the name on the front of the branch in quote marks..."Bank On Dave"...so it is really a phrase meaning 'you can count on Dave' rather than a proper company name. Anyone who pointed this out to him got the response "We're not a fu**ing Credit Union! We're a Bank!" Refuses to admit he didn't win. Still...an interesting documentary to watch (the original...not this film, which I wonder if it will tell the truth), and it really does show how the banking industry is an old boys club and a law unto themselves. Dave had a good idea in theory and it would've been great to see him succeed.
I knew nothing about this story, but I would absolutely support this guy. Legally or illegally. Wouldn't make any difference. I believe in doing the right thing over the legal thing.
A credit union is not the same as a savings and loan or a bank. A credit union is a not-for-profit, member-owned cooperative which is limited to a specific “field of membership” that share a specific characteristic like location, occupation, etc. In a credit union each account owner also owns one share of the credit union and has one vote in the decisions about its operations. The members elect a Board of Directors that make decisions on their behalf. Credit Unions are not limited in the types of products and services they offer. They can provide checking/savings accounts, loans, mortgages, credit cards, and more. Usually, the products and services are tailored to the needs of their specific membership. Therefore, if Dave wanted to open a financial institution and run it himself for the people he wanted to serve, then a credit union would not have necessarily been a good option because he would need to turn control over to the members and their elected Board of Directors and serve a limited field of membership.
Doesn't take much digging to know who controls them either. A bank can create money out of thin air with fractional reserve. That's what they don't want

My wife and I saw this movie the other night and we absolutely loved it. Such a wholesome, feel good and uplifting film.
Seen it a while ago. It just popped up on my netflix recommendations. Everybody I've recommended it to loves it.
