  • Once considered gimmicky, laser sights have come a long way. Once sighted in, there might not be a better accessory to enhance shooting while moving or from unconventional positions.

You are absolutely correct that a laser is the fastest way to get on target and get the first critical shot when attacked. The gun can be aimed from the hip immediately out of the holster. This is definitely faster than bringing it up to eye level. [Tom Gresham, of Gun Talk, endorses lasers for self defense.] Why are so many instructors against lasers on self defense handguns? This doesn't make sense at all. The Viridian laser "ECR" [Enhance Combat Readiness] system seems to be the best. It comes on instantly when it is removed from a holster with a magnet laser deactivator. This doesn't change the user's grip and there is no need to activate it with a switch. The batteries last for months and the laser can be switched off to dry fire with iron sights. Thoughts?

I can see the laser being detrimental in an offensive or coordinated combat where you need to not telegraph your position. That would include SWAT teams and secret service as well as hostage situations. For regular self-defense in weird postures, there's nothing like the laser for response time.

    • @Iliek

A lot of guys are simply biased. They may think the "only" way to learn how to shoot is with iron sights and that lasers are "improper". Well then tell me, what is improper about shooting from the hip with a laser when I directly hit the target?

They may be less useful for someone that was in special forces and spent 10 years and millions of tax payer dollars training at the highest level but for the common man like you and I, a laser can be helpful at 3am when something goes bump in the night.

Hello! Great Video and I just took a self defense workshop on concealed carry and quick self defense reations and response. I am a lefty shooter and keep my car gun in the side pocket of my car with easy reach. In a number of trial exercises, I had to grab the gun.....always with a loaded chamber, quickly react to a car highjacker from both the driver side and passenger side. Trying to access the firearm, and then bring up to attempt to sight....... on either side...... difficult...... Added the laser option training gun. With either hand, had to then quickly place the laser tag on the target, close range , either hand.......significantly more effective and putting rounds on the intruder..........Much faster and accurate reaction time in that short reaction time to an emergency sitiation.
Fast forword to another class of home invader........Added the bright light and laser sight to a home invader situation. Much more accurate to blind and confuse the invader with the light and easily sight with the laser.. Now has added that to my home defense weapon.
Real world situation: We on a refueling stop in some bogus little town in Virginia pulling a race car trailer to a late night gas station that was the only one who had diesel........As we were fueling, 3 of the bored locals who apparently had nothing else to do and thought we were an easy target, watched a few times, keep looking back and dedided that they wanted to come up and have an up close and personal "Chat" with us. Had my partner pumping the fuel and had the truck between them and us.......as they decided closer and were dumb enough to discuss what they were going to do etc, Let them get into the open middle ground and then popped on the laser......They stopped in their tracks as I moved the beam from one to another......... Eyes got very large......Leader said Shakly" We do not want any trouble" Laser solved what we knew was going to be a bad situation,
Having one that you can turn on as needed is invaluable in a number of situations......especially in car invasions where you are restricted in time and being able to am accuratly with the sights...
My 2 cents worth from the last 2 years of experince.....
Be smart, get trained and think though what you would do in those situations to keep you safe.......sadly, the way things are going......we are going to need it.

Same, for years I have always "zeroed" my lasers the distance it is from the bore - That way it can be used at any distance without being wildly off target. I ways know its about 1 inch below bore with armalaser or crimsontrace.

  • @mjgII
    @mjgII Před 3 lety +13

A laser lined parallel with the bore is the best method IMO, it's not hard to compensate for a 1/2-2 inch offset. If you're going to zero a laser at a specific distance, using it at any distance beyond your zero will be increasingly inaccurate very quickly as you move downrange. That said, having confirmation on exactly where your bore is incredibly helpful, especially on a handgun. Where the laser really shines is shooting from less than ideal positions (in a car, moving and shooting, shooting from concealment/around corners) drawing /shooting very quickly and tracking moving targets.

I use both a laser and a red dot sight. The laser is for immediate acquisition. For all the reasons you described as well.
The Red Dot is for anything mid-level or great distance when I have at least a second to comfortably acquire the Red Dot in the screen and take my shot.
But my favorite reason for having both a laser and a red dot sight I discovered by accident: If I have absolutely any difficulty whatsoever acquiring the Red Dot, all I have to do is paint a target with the laser and looks through the Red Dot glass and I will instantly find the Red Dot co-witnessing with the laser.
Like magic. It also allowed me to use a laser as a training tool so that I can acquire the Red Dot more efficiently every time.

You made some excellent points here that I didn’t think about before, and I’m now seriously considering getting one for my EDC pistol.
Obviously nobody should rely on a laser as an end all solution for aiming well, because they still need to practice all the fundamentals necessary in order to make the shots as accurate as possible, but I can see now that sometimes a proper sight picture might not be possible in certain situations. I will have sarato about 10 plumbs since I have it. 5.5 mm !!! But at least I need to improve the sight, because when I aim at an 'object but the barrel turns out 2\3 cm below consequently it is not an accurate thing (also applies to any weapon). I was thinking of looking for a sight that can be glued on the barrel so that it will be accurate in absolute. However, it is a nice gun. Let me know your suggestions. Thank you very much.

The offset is negligible if you're going for center of mass, or even a head shot, in a self-defense situation. Bulls-eyes at long range might be problematic, but then again, at longer ranges the laser dot will be barely visible, and hard to pick up anyway.

The issue with lasers on a gun that sits in a drawer = lately I have been plagued by bad batteries that last a lot less than supposed to, probably because they were "stale" when I bought them. Examples only this year so far are kitchen scale (two changes in 2022, usually it lasts almost a year), son's RC car (now it's good but the previous time batteries lasted less than 1 hour) and Motorola walkie-talkie AAA batteries, which we forgot inside since last summer (2021) and did not work now (I'm pretty sure we did not use them that much last year). After all, it's better to have a longer range sight than limited. I hope you never have to use it in a home defense situation, and if you do I hope your knees work better than your eyes, better for you to keep safe distances and still maintain accuracy.
