    Vietnam has fallen behind its neighbours and missed its tourism targets for 2022. Why is this the case? Does Vietnam still want tourists and travellers or are they happen to just let things stay as they are.

    I just booked Thailand for Feb. £750 return from London. Not too bad compared to before covid. Hotels not looking too expensive either. 15 day visa is gonna be a big deal I reckon for Vietnam. Flight prices are high too. The West has been going in the wrong direction for a long time and the hens are coming home to roost now with all the money printing. Everyone in the western world got a 10% pay cut this year!!! Gas and electricity and food have all jumped up and you know what these corporations are like, the prices will never come down. That’s the real new normal. Quality of life for most in the uk is 〽️⬇️

    Very informative video... But you are quite fortunate that the tourist infiltration is at a minimal. In Thailand it's inundated with too many low quality tourists that have little respect for themselves or who is in their vicinity. Ironically I miss the convid days of empty streets and quiet beaches. The environment is suffering drastically unfortunately in Thailand.

    Thailand never recovered. It´s just government propaganda. The main reason the tourists have not returned to Asia as you rightly pointed out is due to recession in Western countries. This recession is self-inflicted in many ways and we will see even further deindustrialization in Western countries. The UK is one country playing the global power game without the resources to fund it, unlike America or even Germany. I am in the restaurant business and Brits are known for being cheap just about anywhere they go.

    Hmm, I am curious where you got the 3-6 million salary range for vietnamese workers from? From what I've read even lowly workers in factories get 7-8 million (> 300 USD) or even more if they work overtime. This is not counting any Tet bouses which can be worth a month wage or more. The wage of 130 USD per month is probably for some agricultural worker in a remote village. But even they probably make a bit more nowadays.

      I heard down in the Mekong area this wage was common-like you said maybe more agricultural workers etc. There has been some bigger increases recently, but even at 7tr it's still pretty low and is a big reason why many global manufacturers' are piling into the country.

    The current visa situation has no bearing on 'tourism', but certainly has on those who wish to stay long-term (so not tourists). The average stay of a western tourist is probably 10-14 days, and for the wealthy Asian or Chinese/Korean group it's maybe 5D4N. So a 15-day waiver or 30-day evisa is absolutely fine for the majority. Vietnam doesn't want the long-stay backpacker like Thailand, and neither is it really interested in long-term Western retirees - why should it be? The average monthly salary in Vietnam is about $300, but this is distorted by an increasingly wealthy middle-level/class and at the other end of the scale an increasingly impoverished agricultural sector where many struggle on less than $100 PM. The reasons for international companies moving en-masse to Vietnam are complex, but there are three main reasons - an educated and willing young workforce, especially those coming out of the increasingly professional university route, a relatively low-cost workforce (for now), and probably the most important reason is to reduce dependency on China - especially for US companies such as Apple.

    This: I've done 18 trips to Vietnam since 2013. Some just a few days and others up to a month. My latest trip was in August 2022 and I did the Ha Giang Loop. I was once enamoured with Vietnam, but not any more. I doubt I'll be going back there any time soon. Vietnam tourism is set up for Vietnamese people, and not foreigners. Their tourism model is mass tourism. It's all about shovelling as many people through as possible for maximum profit. Go to any number of the major sightseeing attractions and what do you see; cable cars running masses of people up to a peak or, if you're in Nha Trang, out to the islands. And on top of the peaks you've got crappy amusement parks with circus rides. Vietnam has a population of over 100 million people. Everywhere you go there are swarms pushing, shoving, and crowding. And therein lies the issue for westerners. We're not interested in a mass tourism model. We want something which offers an indivual type approach and a bit more elbow space. There's actually very little you can do as a foreign tourist in Vietnam which is DYI. Everything you want to see and everywhere you want to go is on a guided tour, or has to be with a tour guide. The Ha Giang Loop is well past it's time of the idyllic adventure. Groups of 20 - 30 riders head out from QT Hostel on a daily basis on a tour, led by the hostel staff, which has bucket list stops and no scope for individualism or getting off the beaten track. These day the Ha Giang Loop is hardly the adventure of a life time. Another example: one of the premier attractions is a boat trip through the Tu San Slot. Except there's no indicating signage anywhere in English on where to go to book on for the tour. Just some local numbskull standing under an umbrella waving at you. I spent 30 minutes riding up and down the river trying to find the ticket booking spot. Once on the boat tour, a pack of local ladies stood up the front and spent the entire trip getting their "proof I've been there pics." By the time they were done the cruise was over. So many restaurants and coffee shops I've been into in Vietnam and there's not an English language menu in sight. The Vietnames need to get their shit together if they want western tourists to return. Or maybe they don't. Maybe they just want the mainland Chinese to return. On a final note, if you want freedom, individualism, and DYI, go to LAOS. Once you've been there you won't go back to Vietnam and it's mass tourism model.

    • @expatnam
      @expatnam  Před rokem +2

      Interesting points, and i think basically echoing what i often imply in my videos. VN is very resistant to change, and in fact perhaps doesn't really want to change. When i say change i mean things like sorting out the terrible trash problem and service issues. You've got the complex political situation with a large portion of the nation slowly rising to the middle income ranks. Left behind are huge swathes of low income families with no support from the gov. and a 'money now attitude.' You can't blame them, but this is partly the cause of lower service and poorly maintained infrastructure, living in the moment and a lack of desire to change for the better. I could go on but it's complicated. Thanks for your comments.

    His video is not at where most tourist like to go to Vietnam during this season. This video was video in Decemember and no tourist like to go to the beach around December. Many tourist like to go to downtown and clubs in a overcrowd cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Do you think you would see people's at the beach in December or January? Use common sense.

      There's a graphic in the video that lists the 24 countries. Here's the link to the gov. website that lists the 80 countries that can get the evisa: evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/trang-chu-ttdt

    Curious if you know what it costs you to charge your battery.

      Not very much at all. Can't say for sure but could probably work it out from the wattage of the battery.

      Very easy on the train, about 200k and takes 3 days. Just rock up at the station anytime and they will take it and send it anywhere in the country (that's on the train route)

    Visa fees are a gold mine of the communist government of Vietnam, so it is difficult to eliminate visa fees. It is unlimited greed, seeing small gains but not seeing greater benefits.
