    I'm so excited for you! I've heard it recommended to let bareroot trees sit in a bucket of water for 2 hours before planting and watering inside the hole you dig until it's almost full of water before planting. Hopefully your way works too. I'd also recommend stakes to make sure the wind or storms don't dig out your trees until they're well-established. Can't wait to see what you do next!

      I planted a pear straight out of the same box at my house and it’s leafing out just fine. I did however soak the other trees and potted them up since I was running out of time clearing the land. I do appreciate the advice pretty sure it’s better to soak than not.

    You cleared that area so fast, great purchase. Love the new fruit trees. I love how you repurpose everything.

    You might want to plant some sacrificial plants like rye grass for the deer. Then they’ll go for that and leave your tree alone.

    Make sure you keep up with the weed-waking around that area. It grows soo fast and in no time it will suffocate the fruit trees! It happened to me when I first started my food forest 🥴

    Good idea with the cardboard! I'll be trying that in the future. I also appreciate the use of leaves as a mulch. That definitely looks like a nice, sunny spot to grow some fruit trees, and I think they'll do really well there. If that spay doesn't work to keep the deer away, some sort of predatory pheromone or urine may do the trick.

    You have a ton of organic materials around you, there's no need to bring from home. Just stack up the organic matter that you are cutting down next to the trees with the big stuff on the bottom and small on the top. Cool project though.

  • @pbandjayable
    @pbandjayable Před 4 měsíci

    You should chip up/mulch any of the stuff you cut down to save on mulch.

    • @paulplantu
      @paulplantu  Před 4 měsíci

      Right now I’m trying to do everything in the least expensive way possible. Buying a big enough chipper to handle what I’m cutting would be pretty costly. The brush cutter shreds small wood into a nice mulch as is

    I'm glad you caged those trees. Rabbits will get at the bark too. If you need more of that wire, I have some that I got with my new house that I don't need. I'll send you a message.

    I like your use of the cardboard. I will definitely try it from now on. It look like you forgot to soak your bare root trees overnight prior to planting and didn't give them plenty of water after planting. Young trees can certainly die from the Texas heat. I hope that they all grow and fruit for you.

    Quick suggestion for keeping natural paths, cleared for longer, is getting a tree company to drop you a couple of loads of wood chips to lay on them (most do it for free)

    What’s good Paul. You may want to let your trees branch out higher up and trim off the low branching structures if you got deer pressure. I know having a short manageable tree is all the fad but in your situation I think a tall majestic fruit tree with a high crown would be most beneficial.
    Here’s some recommendations for stuff you may want to try and plant. These have been some of my favorite varieties and they should do well in your area (all less than 400 chill and self fertile)
    Mulberry (Pakistan)
    Che (Norris Seedless)
    Fig (Tiger Panache)
    Cherry (Royal Crimson)
    Aprium (Cot N Candy)
    Jujube (Li)
    Kumquat (Fukushu)
    Good luck! 👊

    not sure if you're deep into garden/homestead/food forest CZcams, but a few channels I recommend, are Epic Gardening, The Millennial Gardener, of course the growing channel with James Prigioni. I've been watching you since the EARLY thrift days. Glad I've found a new avenue to enjoy your videos through!

    @margievaughan2456 Před 4 měsíci

    Awesome job & I appreciate your using leaves & the tree you cut for support & it’s not over kill using fence & spray because the deer are very persistent. I also have lots of deer pressure

    Thanks Paul. I really enjoyed the video. Good luck with the fruit trees. Here in Tucson, mine are already in full leaf and many have started to flower. Hope we don't get a late hard freeze like last year. Take care and keep the videos coming. Gary

    Enjoy watching your enthusiasm! I only fear what you may be facing with the deer. I have been dealing with them my entire life and they're still winning. Everything you're doing will work but a constant battle. I couldn't help but notice your cages didn't appear to be covered at the top, the deer up north usually have a reach of 8 feet. If I were to do it all over again, I would save my pennies (lots of them) and put deer fencing around the entire fruit area. Although that my keep other critters you want out that you want in.

    hit up the county fire department and see if they'll do a prescribed burn on it. Right now is the best time. not to send you down a rabbit hole of fire ecology but you're tract is likely fire deprived. if you burn it, it will help clear out the understory, benefit the natives, and you can further plant things afterwards. it's for the planet dawg!

    I bet the border is a great place to cultivate just to be a better neighbor, if you're planting fruit trees there you're probably removing invasives along the way too! Do you have any oaks? Maybe you could get acorns. Pawpaws? Btw I think the only GMO tree fruits that exist now are the Dole pink pineapple and the Arctic non-browning apple, both of which I think are patented and proprietary still I don't think they have been released.
