    I'm so pleased that I found your video's, there's lots of CZcamsrs who love themselves more than the plants. They stand there quoting these big latin names that no normal person could ever remember and thinking how great they are. With you it's the plant's that are the stars. Your advice is clear and simple but understandable at the same time. Well done for sharing your experience with us plant murders.

    For outer plant pots I go on a charity shop tour: never buy a fancy pot more expensive than £3. Also, I collect the ones chucked by the neighbours’ fences to take. They all get washed and disinfected, recycling is good for the planet and gentle to your purse. In plant shops these pots are more expensive than the plants themselves. 🪴

    I need help with Begonias. Could you please make a video on them? They present confusing symptoms - signs of under and over watering at the same time. Also they show signs of too much light and not enough light at the same time. How a plant can manage to stretch and burn and rot and dry out all at once is maddening. It makes it impossible to know what I"m doing wrong.

    The biggest surprise for me with pruning was my raphidophora tetrasperma, that things stem got way thicker after a chop. Same with my silver sword! There are very few plants in my collection that I don't chop and prop, mainly because I don't have the space for the big cuttings xD my family would kill me if I suddenly ploped down several big thai con cuttings all over the house!

    As far as watering goes, idk if anyone else has had this experience, I kept getting root rot for a couple years, and couldn't figure out why, until recently.
    Everyone says to water when the plant is dry, which I always did, always, but still got root rot. I've recently realized I was watering the moment the soil went dry (all the way through the pot not just the top), and I learned through experience that most plants like to be dry for not just a day but several days before they're ready for more water. Especially cacti and succulents, I only water when they start showing signs of dehydration, and that can be days or weeks after the last watering depending on the plant. I do the same for tropical plants I wait until they show me outward signs of dehydration, slightly limp leaves, a little droop, and now it's been several months since I've had root rot!
    Happy days I thought I was going to have to switch to hydroponics just to avoid the rot, but I can have plants in soil without issues now. Also I think I may have repotted some plants in too big of pots as well, so now I make sure the roots take up 1/3 of the pot, or slightly more to ensure my pot isn't too big. Hopefully this helps some other beginners! Good luck

  • @Dwynfal

    Try adding Bacillus thuringiensis ssp Isrealensis to your water for the fungus gnats. It kills the larval stage of the little buggers so it can greatly reduce the population over time! I found some in capsule form in a local outdoor pond / gardening centre. Cheap as chips, I put about 1/8 of a capsule per 4l jug after I've treated it with water conditioner when I start seeing gnats on my yellow traps. Simples! 😉

  • @Jacobiano_
    @Jacobiano_ Před 3 měsíci +1

    I had to tell you; I started noticing tiny flies that were way slower than the average kitchen fly, they were all over some of my plants, so I covered the top of the soil with shredded charcoal and that solved the problem. It also helped my moldy caladium and also works as a fertilizer. Perhaps that could solve your fungus gnat problem.

  • @KayBX
    @KayBX Před 3 měsíci +3

    This is yet another reason that I’m putting all my plants in pon or Leca lol. Majority of my collection are already in semi hydro. I don’t like the messiness of soil and I love the fact that I am having less and less fungus gnats.
    However, I’ve gone from over watering and potentially killing plants to potentially killing plants from under watering 😅. Semi hydro helps stop this.
    I love your videos,mate❤

    @user-ur6gy4gm4b Před 3 měsíci +2

    I realised how important the right soil is. No matter how spot on you are with your watering and how much light you give them, they won't grow as they should if the soil isn't right. A lot of the soils from the chain or big box stores have compost and a lot of plant matter that hasn't been decomposed in the soil. And the soil is often infected, either kept too moist or something else. I'm not saying that all soils are bad. But I lost countless avocado and mango seedlings because of root rot. And even though it's partially my careless style of watering, it shouldn't be so punishing for a slightly too frequent watering. Not only that, but the pots either don't have enough drainage holes, which are tiny by the way, or are closed by caps or something like that. I know you could drill more holes, but some of the pots are just too thick.
    I'm starting to see that now with my oldest, most beloved avocado tree from seed. It lost all its leaves in January, though it tried to bud for some time, lost the ability to take up water in early April. And now my tree looks so abysmal - from the base of the trunk to the nodes turning black and rotting and is making its way up the trunk, the entire stem has brown and even black spots, which have white fungus and none of the remaining buds are active.
    Solution? Well, apart from sybotanica, there is another amazing soil I haven't gotten my hands on. And that soil is none other than (drum rolls please).......... decomposed granite. That soil is especially good for tropical plants like avocado trees, mango trees and citrus! It provides ecellent drainage while retaining moisture. It also has no organic matter that can rot and cause problems like stem and root rot and overwatering. It even helps with preventing pests like fungus gnats and spider mites from attacking. I don't know much about coco coir, but I think it's also great.
    That's just my opinion and doesn't mean it will work for everyone. And amazing video! Your videos are so educational and chucklesome. Keep up the great work!
