    The problem with the Hornet is that Japanese designs have enormously inspired themselves of insects in recent decades (there was a Japanese name for that type of design, but I can't remember it for the life of me), so when Honda decided to make a bike worthy of the Hornet name, they got kinda stuck.
    Regarding the KTM, you're right about bugs, and it just looks _busy_ to me, adding unnecessary stuff, which goes against my vision of the motorcycle ethos.
    Someone in the comments said it made it look like a Transformer, and I'd agree: Michael Bay's Transformers, where unnecessary stuff is added during transformations to hide bad robot design.

    Another aspect of what (I think) is going on here, is that projector headlights are substantially cheaper to produce than a custom designed enclosed headlight unit with a lens. It's much simpler to design and cheaper to manufacture some off the shelf projector headlamps that fit into injection-molded forms than it is to build an enclosed headlight that needs to be water tight and withstand heat from the lamps and impacts from road debris.
    What we end up with are these generic beady-eyed lights that are inevitably insectoid, and as you pointed out an absolute pain to clean. A more rounded conversation about naked bike headlamps would include the new Monster (a modern take on the classic single round), Street Triple range (modern take on the dual eyes-like setup), and the Brutale (another classic single round). Those bikes have kept the more classic round, or dual eye-like headlight arrangements, which are more anthropomorphic and IMHO more appealing (I must be old fashioned) but still managed to pack in all the tech of LED running lights and projector lamps.

    What really struck me with the new KTM headlights (moreso on the 1390) is how well it fits into the design of the bike as a whole. The bodywork has a lot of hard angles, but there are also a lot of parallel lines among all the different parts that glue it together. That's something that the 990 and gen 1 1290 also did well. Not that the gen 2-3 1290s don't have a cohesive, aggresive design, but in comparison, the lines flow more gently.

    I think another point worth talking about in Headlight design is readability/safety. The problem with two headlights horizontal is that for an oncoming driver there's two possible reads: A very close motorcycle or a very far away car. And since cars are much more common, that can lead to incorrect interpretations and consequently accidents. Thats why Ive traditionally been more fond of the single headlight, but the recent more elaborate designs (like BMW's X) might be even safer, since they are so very different from a car and the uniqueness makes it more likely that oncoming traffic takes a moment more to get a read on the situation instead of making a (potentially fatal) assumption.

    I think except the Panigale (sans the ugly winglets) and a couple of MVs- there's hardly a machine there which makes your heart skip a beat. The 2008 models of the R1 and 600RR, the 2016 Fireblade or even the boring yet the gorgeous CB1000R- they all reeked of some emotion behind the design and not just the engineering obligation of pushing close to the 200 bhp mark. I can imagine if I owned any of those, I'd always turn back for a second look- not sure I'd have the same feeling for the current crop of motorcycles.

    I agree with that. I feel like the designers sat in the theater watching Transformers for too long. Form follows function used to be a thesis. But there have always been design flaws that ultimately led to sales flops. See BMW Scarver... or C1 Scooter. Royal Enfield, on the other hand, is celebrating success. Because they stuck to their old, simple design for a long time and are now only renovating moderately, Moto Guzzi also follows this... and is successful.

    I learned one this from this video and it's that I greatly differ in my aesthetic preferences to CC. I think the new GS headlight looks infinitely better than the old design, the 2015 R1 refresh with the small lights looked amazing from the moment it was released and KTM design, even as a current Duke owner, are an aesthetic dumpster fire; especially the newest iterations. The current state of motorcycle design as a whole is so bad, in my opinion, that I'm truly struggling to narrow down my new bike options for my upgrade next year. I'm either interested in the general appearance of a bike but don't care for the feature set/mechanicals/etc or vice-versa. It's a tough time to be looking for a new bike despite the myriad options.

    I instinctively prefer rounded edges and smoothly transitioning surfaces, as that to me seems the best way to cut through the air with minimal turbulences. Supersonic airplanes, of course, need very sharp edges to punch through wave drag which gives them a very distinctive look; I've wondered if motorcycles take a lot of their design cues from supersonic airplanes.
    But no, motorcycle design that isn't purposefully functional doesn't factor in my purchasing decision, as most of the time you spend with a bike will be riding the bike. I do think bikes could be wider in order to protect rider's hands from wind, rain, and debris. Bikes from the 1990's all were very wide.

    I was looking at new bikes and ended up going with a cb300r because of it's looks... and also I had a choice between an MT03, Svartpilen 401 and SCL500... and I was not feeling the MT03 and the other two were quite a bit more pricey than MT03 or CB... the Svartpilen was $7600CAD base-price... the cb came out to $7900 after taxes and fees.

    For sports bikes the best design should be the perfect efficiency or cost or spec focused. I think most of the time design comes down to manufacturing profit efficiency based around collective data.
    We really need a future concept bike to hit manufacturing and give us a different type of riding.

    It's all for the sake of sales, for example, Yamaha has a product in the middle class MT07 which is selling well in Europe with new upgrades such as headlamp designs in 2021. This premise was then tried to be adopted by KTM with its KTM Duke series in 2023. Then Suzuki also tried to do the same thing. on the GSX series in 2022. Then Honda copied Kawasaki's Sugomi. I think manufacturers are no longer oriented towards what drives them but are just riding on fame because every motorbike ultimately has the same character. Then as a consumer you are only left with the price to compare for the same motorbike from a different brand.

It's a beautiful abomination. You respect the engineering and the madness of a supercharged monster. You understand the concept and why it was made. It's still ugly to me compared to the beautiful lines of MV Agusta or Ducati but I'm still a Kawasaki simp nonetheless

  • @888jackflash

    As an older rider who has owned many sportbikes, I detest most of the modern headlight designs. The worst problem is that they are too small in AREA. BRIGHTNESS cannot make up for this, you need VOLUME of light to be seen. In the frantic, high-danger traffic of the eastern US, drivers have become EXTREMELY careless, and don't even see my giant FJR headlights. Also the huge number of DEER we have also will not see those tiny little twinkie lights. I'm afraid this will cost lives, screw how it "looks".

    • @ByronWWW
      @ByronWWW Před 7 měsíci +1

      LEDs are bright but very focused light - since they've changed most street lighting in UK to LEDs the streets actually look much darker and it's harder to see because there's less ambient light, and theres much more contrast between lighted sections and dark (compensated a bit by making 20mph the default speed limit in a lot of places!)

    • @888jackflash
      @888jackflash Před 7 měsíci

      As an experienced Stage-Lighting designer, I've recognized that LED's produce a far different wavelength of light than Incandescents, and it's not always good. As you mentioned, LED's throw-off a tighter beam, and so oncoming drivers (and DEER) can easily miss it, especially the single-bulb headlights, ala MT-10 and GSX.@@ByronWWW

    Totally agree with your thoughts regarding MT-09 :) 2nd gen is the best, but for me it also took some time to like it. It looks aggressive, but not enough. Even Kawasaki looked more modern at this time. But we are not buying bikes looking only on their design. I don't see any alternative for that CP3 engine. That is why I've changed my 2nd gen to 4th. But have to say that I am tall and not all bikes are comfortable for me. For example BMW F900 gives much more for less money (better multimedia, launch without key, electric suspension).

  • @exothermal.sprocket
    @exothermal.sprocket Před 6 měsíci

    Meanwhile... FJR1300 gets all the bells and whistles and is thoroughly modern and we almost never hear about it. It's also quite a beautiful design. A CP4 engine "tall-rounder" would have to convince customers that a 32 mpg touring bike was worth it, when a much bigger engine in the FJR registers better economy, and could run coast-to-coast over 100 mph the entire way without breaking a sweat.
    About the MT-09 refresh? It's a very important bike for the brand. They would have kept turning away customers hadn't they addressed the awkward design. Its much better from my eye in 2024. Also features on the base model are more satisfying by now.

    Some new bikes headlights are getting dimmer too. It's not because of the technology, but because they just lower the output for longer lifespan. Also they're more expensive and harder to mod with compare to the old halogen lights.
