      Totally agree! And thank you for calling it “skills and knowledge” instead of talent. April’s early projects proved that she’s no more talented than the average person and years of passion-driven learning is behind her now “effortless” sewing.

      Start with baby steps, take a basic sewing class or costume design class. I learned a lot about sewing there. As a young kid I first learned making patches and repairing my own clothes, like buttons and things, but I didn't learn how to follow patterns and things until i was in High School. You can do it too. Just start with something small like a barbie doll. :)

    This reminds me of when I used to sew. I would make clothes, ect. sometimes without a pattern, just the idea in my head. I also used to crochet and knit. That was in my teens through my 30s. Now I'm in my 60s and I wonder how I did all of those things, lol.

I felt so cute and girly lol. It’s funny bc I’m only in my 20s now, but much more modest. I have no idea how I wore some of the things I did ! It was quite harmless though. I just wanted to be cute and fashionable.

We have thrift stores where you can pick up beautiful clothes (fabrics complete with buttons & zippers) for $0.50 each, yes, that's fifty cents. I've been a seamstress for 30 years. I'm very impressed with what you can do and how clever you are in spotting the possibilities in garments others have tossed out. Please may I urge you to purchase a serger as soon as you can. With your imagination and rapidly developing skills even a basic serger will give you opportunities that are presently hard to work with. You can banish raw edges, make hems a breeze, and be able to work more easily with knits. Sergers are a great help in putting two different fabrics together like polyester and denim. The one I use is not expensive, available on Amazon, and easy to learn. With your gift of imagination you'll open up limitless possibilities of combining garments into wonderful new designs.
    But whether you do or you don't, keep sewing. Recycling can be an art, and you are living proof.

      Jody Hakala - be creative with where you look! My mom has seen sewing since middle school (first thing she ever made was her Confirmation dress, which takes guts!) and she taught my older brother and I both to sew on our grandmothers antique machine. First off, if you get really into sewing, those old cast iron singers are COMPLETELY worth the space take up!! I just got my own and can’t wait to get it up and running! But I also had a modern machine as soon as I moved out on my own. My first one was a cheap Singer and didn’t last long (that’s a common trend with the newer, cheap, entry level Singers). When it died, my mom and I looked all over for a slightly better one I could afford until we stumbled across a Brother at Costco of all places! It was $60 cheaper there than at Amazon and despite having just started using it, it’s been quick to pick up.
      I recommend any entry level machine just have the basic two or three sets of stitches (I think mine has something like 40 different stitches, which is pretty normal). Don’t bother with a cheap one that says it does actual embroidery (ie, real pictures). To get a decent machine that can also do embroidery is a good bit pricier and all you’re doing at that cheap end is sacrificing quality in other places. Mine does some fancier stitching in straight lines and that’s all the fancier I want from a machine like it!

      This is probably a silly question but when you did the straps how did you so effortlessly keep the stitch straight? Anytime i sew something it immediately starts shifting. I can never do top stitching. Its impossible for me or spaghetti straps like those. Any tips?

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. Před 8 lety +10

      You might try using an edgestitching foot. It has a little guard you place along the edge of your fabric to help you keep your lines even.
      However, you might want to consider that few other people ever look at your clothes as closely as you will. If your stitching wobbles a little once in a while it could be that nobody ever notices but you. Maybe all you need is to go easy on yourself and just enjoy being creative!

    • @activeincolorado
      @activeincolorado Před 8 lety +6

      If your straps start shifting when doing a spaghetti strap or any type of strap like belt loops it is either you are stretching the fabric when sewing or you have not cut them on the strait of grain. You need to make sure they are really cut strait for them to lay well.

    The starting "dress" was an abaya, a common piece of clothing worn in Middle Eastern countries. Lots of abayas and salwar have super pretty embroidery on them and are a fairly common thriftstore find! If the city you're in is decently big you may also have mom and pop imports stores that cater to the local Muslim community, where you can buy those clothes new and in more modern cuts/colors for fairly cheap.

    Good job!!! There was a time years ago when I made everything I wore. And I must say, nothing looked home made. My grandmother was a seamstress in Europe with a thriving business. She could look at a dress in a store window, go home armed with the fabric and replicate the dress perfectly. I never reached that level and had to use a pattern, and in those days that was Vogue couture patterns.
    I have lost over 100 lbs. and have decided to start sewing again. Your video and instructions have given me the push I needed to get going!
    You are very, very talented. That new dress from the old one is lovely!

      That is so one of the best things about making your own stuff. People always ask me about where I buy some of the clothes and jewelry I wear to work and it's so satisfying to say "Oh this? I made it. Ohoho." I'm not nearly as skilled as this, but I guess for the person who has never sewn a scrap in their life, it looks pretty impressive anyway.

    I was proud of being able to take up trousers and Jeans, repair holes and sew on buttons. The most I've even done to a dress was sew the straps to make it shorter and more fitting. I am now humble with my mediocre sewing skills. The final result was so beautiful I would wear the hell out of it.
