You’re a national treasure! Seriously, the explanations are clear, great audio visual and topics are relevant. Thanks for all that you do and please keep it coming. 👏👍
Thanks Darren, glad you are enjoying the vids.
International ;) ❤️
I felt like I was on the job with you the whole day, calmly learning how to fix a boat.
Brilliant content. You are articulate, cut a lot of the BS out, show great content and not be afraid to show your mistakes.. Well done...👍👍☺️☺️
Thanks Keram!
Stu, I’ve watched all your vids from the beginning and love them, warts and all. Sure the production quality has improved over the years but those early one’s really drew me in because of their honesty and the obvious desire to educate the great unwashed on all aspects of marine maintenance in easily understood terms. You should be proud of your body of work.
The new website design looks awesome and you’ve obviously put a lot of thought into the navigation which is where a lot of web designers come unstuck. I look forward to using it in the future.
Thanks mate, much appeciated!
@@DangarMarine I couldn't agree more Stu.... Always loved and enjoyed your videos.... (warts and all) I look forward to every post... Thanks Stu!
Was in a boat pulling a skier and part of the steering cable mechanism broke and the 85 hp motor was at full throttle. We were in the middle of a turn and the torque slammed the motor in the opposite direction and ripped the motor off the transom The motor did a 180, flipping upside down with prop coming out of the water and for a brief moment, went to some insane RPM before submerging. Luckily we lived to tell about it and nobody got hurt. We had to change our underwear when we got home though...
Good gravy, that will wake you right up, huh?
I'm sure you would have had a kill cord on didn't you?
@@charlesxix I was a passenger, but knowing the driver... probably not.
Yep, that's the real hazard, the torque of the engine will turn it to full lock in an instant. When I was working at Maritime we were called to a guy that had that happen and he got thrown against the gunwhale, broke his pelvis then ended up in the water with his boat rapidly doing circles right near him. Not a good day for him at all...
@@DangarMarine Man, broken pelvis and having to dodge a circling boat. Dang. They make kill switches for reason....
I just sat down for lunch and was looking for something to watch! Your timing is perfect
I was just laying down for bed your last night looking for something to watch in the great lakes region of the states... Do a guy a favor and send me tomorrow's US sports scores....LOL
I hope Lewis enjoyed and Joseph places a good bet! :)
Honestly Stu this is twice in 2 days you’ve helped me out.. bought a new (used) boat a couple of weeks ago and the rectifier packed in yesterday.. watched your video on how to test it.. had ordered new steering cable and going to fit it on the weekend..
you sir are a legend 👍🏻
Thanks Gareth, glad to hear the vids have been helping you.
Dulcet tones, clear information, a passion for helping others and beautiful birds as clickbait. What more could a subscriber wish for. Great content, Stu.
Thanks Chris!
The new website looking impressive. 👍🏴
Thanks mate!
Goodo. Website is now in my Boat Folder. You've become a pillar of the Industry.
Thanks mate! Hope the website helps you. :)
I remember thats how i found you in the beginning lol. Watching marine repair vids was always fascinating to me as i grew up around lakes and rivers and my dad and grampa were always working on out ol sea raider boat and before that they had a duo boat. I learned alot of swear words from them! Thanks guys lol. Thanks for sharing those in the beginning stu. It still brings a tear to my eye as they're both gone now but never forgotten. Keep up the good work and give ol adrian a kiss for us eh?
Thanks mate, I'm enjoying getting back into the outboard videos. :)
Your videos have saved my day on so many occasions. Thank you
Another great video helped me ✅just did the steering cable and helm on my small speedboat with this video as some help thanks again from an Irish fan 🇮🇪 ☘️
I must applaud the fashion sense applied to the footwear in this video. I seriously didn't think your feet would fit into such footwear. Love the website concept, well done.
Oh thank you!
Love the new website. And thanks, learning so much and probably saving a fortune too.
Glad you enjoy it!
Your location looks a little distant. I’m in love with it I like your workshop. That would sure be nice to be your assistant. I’m a little old but I enjoy watching your video. I see that you work on different things it must be enjoyable, your new explorer David
Very much appreciate your clear explanations and encouragement for DIY repairs.
your videos are awsome and helping me with my 1978 Baja with a 110 v4 Evinrude, ill have to look for some Carb tips
Very nice...love the website!
Daphne was like "Oh Hell No!"
Thanks mate. No, she's not into sharing...
Thanks Stu the resource base you’ve created is amazing and I’m sure will turn into a marine apprentices tool kit!
You're welcome Michael, glad you like it. :)
The bane of my existence when I lived on the island. Morse cables. Really good advice Stu - Lube, lube and lube regularly the tilt tube. Thanks for another great video Stu
They certainly take some looking after, that's for sure.
Just bought a new 15 foot cable, gearbox, and steering wheel on Amazon for $152 can't best that deal at all now its really smooth
Great price for everything you need!
Your website is unique and excellent. I love the spider's web navigation. Really well done. I am in the market for a used outboard and this resource will be such a great help for any mess I get myself into.
Thanks Brian, I hope the website helps you with your new outboard.
Great web site Stu. Should come in very handy. We'll done mate.
Thanks Norm, hope you are having a great cruising season!
@@DangarMarine Heading your way mate.
I once drilled a drain and a fill hole in a riveted helm case that was really stiff and crunchy. Filled it with cleaning solution and let it sit for a while then drained and blew it out a few times. Installed a screw plug in the drain hole and refilled it with lube and capped the fill hole. The wheel turned nicely afterwards. It was meant as a temporary fix but wound up lasting years. Yes, I’m a very frugal (cheap) boat owner. More money saved on repairs means more fuel in the tank and more bait on the hook.
I can't thank you enough for your videos. Even when I know how to do something, I still watch your videos for new ideas on how to do something. I like that you include ways of doing things without special tools and use clear explanations in layman's terms. Keep up the good work Stu.
Thanks mate!
As always I come to your informative videos and get instant knowledge. Thank you!
Stu your reference to steering coming undone at speed and nasty accidents reminded me of an incident I attended decades ago now.
It occurred during a high speed endurance water-skiing event on the River Murray when a boat suddenly made an abrupt turn of almost ninety degrees straight into a grove of willow trees.
The bloke at the helm seemed to be ok but a fairly substantial branch had collided with the back of the observer's helmet with such force that the branch had snapped like a match.
Although he was conscious and quite cheerful there were natural concerns for the observer's cervical vertebrae so he was fitted with a stiff neck collar and strapped to a Rigid Extraction Device or 'RED board'.
He was quite a character and kept up an almost continuous stream of jokes and humorous observations that made the retrieval crew laugh so much we had trouble carrying the RED he was strapped to through the tangled vegetation to a rescue vessel.
Investigation indicated that the boat involved in the collision had become airborne due to interaction with the wake from another boat causing the helmsman to suspect the steering system had failed.
The helmsman promptly manipulated the helm to confirm his suspicions just as the boat resumed contact with the water resulting in the sudden manoeuvre and accident!
I will never forget examining the branch broken by the observers helmet and wondering how the heck he survived, much less that he was not only conscious but apparently uninjured!
Glad to hear he was okay. You've reminded me of another accident I got called to where the observer got decapitated. Very sad and not a fun one to attend from my side either.
Oh if only jobs I tackled went that smoothly. Great info/description for each segment along the way.
Thanks mate. Yes, I must admit this did go much more smoothly than many other cable replacements. Sometimes you get lucky!
Damn that yellow one with the orange head was pretty.
Love the website Stu. Awesome idea and I can see myself using it for sure.
Thanks mate!
Good on you Stu, the knowledge you have shared over the years has helped me and countless others save both time and money. Now you're taking more time and effort to make things easier to find this treasure chest of teaching moments. You are one fine fella!
Thanks David, happy to help!
Our outboard motor spent 10 years in the Arizona desert (Lake Havasu). The grease in the tilt tube turned into epoxy. A sledge hammer wouldn't budge it.
For sure, once it has set it has really set!
Wishing you best success on the new website, thanks for sharing
Thanks Rene
What agreat repair clip, fantastic talk through and demonstrate all at same time.
Never done a push pull steering cable only done the hydraulic ones.
As for your web site I'll pop on and give it s bash.
But looks great...... simply and easy to follow
Top work.
Thanks Marc!
W O W ! ! ! You have one hundred times more energy than I. What a task. I am so impressed. This should become a go-to source for outboard owners.
Thanks Rex.
Just found out that the yellow winged king parrot is native to Danger island! Super cool that you have them in your workshop!
G’Day Stu , many thanks for the Steering vid, it really helped me to swap out the helm on my Haines Signature 470 DF out of Melbourne Australia , clear , concise , no BS . Subscribed and liked , I’ll have to crank up my Patreon when I can find the password !
My first ever video of Dangar I watched years ago was replacing and cleaning the tube for a steering cable. Now here we are again lol. These are the type of videos I love from Stu. I do love Renko but this simple mechanics are great.
Speaking of. Had a F70 brand new installed a month back. The mechanic installed the steering cable back to front under the helm so when I turned left it went right and vice versa!
My wife calls the channel Danger Machine tho as I wore my Dangar hoodie to the Doctors once and the Dr kept saying "I love the hoodie, Danger Machine doesn't sound safe" Neither does a Dr that can't read but hey!
Wow, surprising that a pro installed it backwards. Obviously didn't take it for a test run either!
@@DangarMarine nope they don't do that either that's the first thing I asked
So don't use Heatherbrae Yamaha lol
Your videos are improving Stu. The new website will be great for people trying to diagnose their problems themselves to save a bit of money or at least make sure the less scrupulous mechanics don't rip them off!
Thanks George, much appreciated!
I enjoy how you recover boats and engines from ending up in the scrap pile.
You would think the outboard engine engineers would put a grease zerk in one end of the steering tube and a small hole at the other end . So fresh goes in and out goes the old contaminated grease.
The trouble is the type of grease you get in grease guns tends to be the type that will gum up these steering tubes, you really need something lighter.
@@DangarMarine
Have you tried Quicksilver 8M0071841
Not cheap but if it does the job and doesn't fail, like getting gummy.
Keep that Detroit engine humming.
FINE BUSINESS!!! And great to see those exotic birds out in the wild! Viewing in western Canada!
Thanks mate. I much prefer to see the birds in the wild than in cages. :)
just got my first boat, it needs work. Thanks for all the great info. big fan of White lithium greese for hindges, fan belt dressing, other.. watched a video demonstration recently showing diferent greeses against a propane torch, all the black greese failed, only the reddish colored Wheel berring stuff survived. also I've noticed a lot of black tars tend to dry shrink crack. so I suggest checking how well wheel berring greese hold up against salt water.
Hey man I like the new mad scientist look , enjoy your content take care.
Hey, thanks!
I originally found you when working on my small outboard
I'm enjoying working on the outboards again. Less back breaking!
Your website added to my favourites. I'm sure I'll be visiting it many times. Thanks so much.

Fantastic website idea - love it. Thanks for all the side-notes and information like the exact job the grease-nipples do. Great Job! Thank you so much!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic content Stu, and so relevant for myself as just refurbing an Avon SR4 RIB Thank you so much for taking time to do such instructional videos. Kind regards Nick in the UK
Thanks Nick, good luck with the refurb!
Brilliant idea, done in a style that works well for me. It was from your videos I worked through why I was having a Monty Python sketch trying to get a warm start on my 17+ Yr old mariner 8 2 stroke. Having a go to resource that starts with the common and through to the odd hail mary checks will help so many like me.
Glad it helped!
excellent idea for the newer subscribers. for us long time viewers, those were the videos that got me to become a long time, watch every vid subscriber! If i ever make it to AUS, i hope i can buy you a fosters (only aussy beer we know in the states)!

Merry Christmas 2022 Stu. I Love your work!!
I have that same spring in my 1999 W900 it runs the electric windows up and down never replaced just serviced with some oil and grease first time one of them did not work I was surprised to see the spring running through the motor and not a gear plate. You have come a long way and I have learned a lot like how many coopers it takes to fix an outboard:) bring back the chalk board!
Thanks John. I do agree about the chalk board, I'll have to work on that!
Love these videos, like the old days.

You're welcome, thank you!
Wow, that website is pretty sweet, nice work!
Thanks for that. :)
I am so happy for found your channel! Subscribed and bookmark your website! Thank you!
Morning Stu (well it's morning here in the UK), what a great idea and a fantastic web site. I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now, I've always found them very informative and helpful with pointing out the things to look for and ways to fix/repair them. Hopefully 1 day I''ll be able to afford a boat of my own to go and do some sea fishing with my family/friends, I'd only be looking for something around the 20 foot mark so I can launch/retrieve myself and tow behind my car. Your videos are great for a beginner trying to get into boating, keep up the good work and I look forward to more videos of Renko and colabs with Adrian.
Thanks mate!
G'Day mate
The new web site looks very cool well done.
Cheers Rory
Thanks Rory!
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve told people about your air compressor and oil trick for the cables! Love your work mate!
Hate to ruin the trick, but compressed air and oil can make explosions happen. if you know a fridge mechanic they may have some dry nitrogen that can be used to do the same thing
Has anyone ever heard of a control cable actually exploding? I'd love to read a report if so.
@@fairhall001 got any more info on that? I will absolutely continue to do it at 100psi
@@dbayboyds409 It is taught in refrigeration. It is why leak testing isn't done with compressed air.
@@DangarMarine Leak testing in refrigeration is done with dry nitrogen because of this risk.
T&H Marine makes a seal for the tail side of the tilt tube, which helps keep nastiness out of the tube, and keeps lubricant inside. There are also boot kits available for the same purpose. The seal works fairly well. I had used the boot style before, but ended up changing over to the tube seal instead, as the boot style didn’t extend far enough for full coverage of the cable tail, and didn’t seal up the tilt tube good enough.
I do think a seal like that is a good upgrade. I would also recommend turning all the way to port when storing the boat to keep the rod retracted.
One of these days, I’ll start working on that 1969 Evinrude 85hp I have, and I’m sure your website will be a great help.
I hope it is!
Thank you very much for your detailed explanations
Thank you. Good job on all your videos
Fantastic website - well done!
Fantastic idea, I’m really looking forward to using it. Great job 🍻
Thanks Louis!
I use some dry graphite powder after spraying on the ptfe as this remains in place and doesn’t clog or harden.
Interesting combination, sounds worth a try.
Hi Stu, Great idea on the Repair Guide video website. Facebook has groups and one is on Mercury outboards mainly 2 stroke. One of the most asked questions is the first one I asked you years ago. Why is my outboard motor only going 10mpr and wanting to die if I try to go any faster? Most of them state they removed the carbs to clean and put them back on. Well, the problem with that carbs need to be re link sync or the motor won't run right. So, showing how to do link sync on a merc 2 stroke is a good one. Also explaining that the only adjustment screw on these carbs is the idle mixture screw. Once that is set up a 1 1/4 turn out from seat that is it. Rest is the link sync and timing adjustment. Idle timing sets the run-in forward gear RPM. I keep telling everyone to get the service manual if they want to save money in the long run on these. it has great troubleshooting in it.
Hey Tim, it is amazing the number of problems that a carburettor sync can solve.
Thank you, this helped me get my installed.
Another great video Stu .
Thanks William!
You are the best, rare gem, keep it coming
Thank you! Will do!
New site looks nice. Thanks!
Glad you like it!
great idea mate. i look forward to usung website in the future. cheers

loving the new look! getting crazier by the day. something I've been trying to do and cant quite figure out, adding electric start to a 4hp 4 stroke mercury. I wont have easy access to pull it and it will be on a very large...... kayak. if you have ideas let me know!
Good question about the electric start. If they sell an electric start version at the same horse power it should be possible. Failing that you may need to fabricate something custom. Would certainly be an interesting video to make. I might give it a go!
This site is going to be a great resource
Thanks mate.

LOL, fair enough. ;)
Thanks for the help!
Excellent again!
Enjoy your style...thank you...great instructor.
Thanks Stu,
Ever try that silicone dielectric/vacuum grease on the steering tubes?
It should repel water hardening and metals corrosion, if you ever seen it on pool filter housings, it is always a greasy mess (loose).
Cool website! I feel like you have done kind of IT skills...
Thanks Pip!
Gday mate your first videos seemed ok to me but the new ones will probably be heaps better ,im glad you are doing some more on outboards as i dont think many would have boats like renko and your videos are always a help , my resto had a mecury marine helm in it when i pulled it apart it was made never to break old school 1980 vintage thought you might have pulled the old helm of and greased it up but i suppose due to time constraints on length of video probably not practical anyway you have helped me already in how ill put my new helm in cheers .
Thanks mate. Not being my boat it's really about the money the owner is willing to spend. Personally I would just replace the helm but it's hard to know where to stop when it is someone else's money.
@@DangarMarine Gday stu yea i thought it was one you were doing up for yourself some people are just tight like do it as cheap as you can and then they get into problems and it costs them twice as much .

Not sure if you planned to but it would be good if you put your video re-makes up on here as well as the web site. I know the subject may have been done before but if you have decided they needed re-making then it likely some of us may not have seen the original.
Yes, they all go to CZcams first and then just get linked to from the website.
I was missing the small engine- outboard repairs :D The website looks amazing! Hopefully i dont /need/ to use it anytime soon.

Stu, can I make a suggestion for a video? Setting up a small tiller outboard on a tinny, motor heights, steering adjustments, how to adjust the little fin that limits torque steer etc…??? I see so many small engines that just don’t look like they are set up well.
Hey mate, that's good suggestion. I do have that covers a bit of that here czcams.com/video/IonsSQYVsU4/video.html but it doesn't go into the trim tab anode. I'm about to put a 25HP tiller on a small hull this week so I'll film that.
