  • I played the amazing trumpet solo "With Malice Toward None" by John Williams with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. It went well, but it didn't feel successful. Why? That's what we're going to talk about in this video!

Absolutely! I recently attended a concert by a regional orchestra and heard "The Planets". No, the strings were not as iridescent as Cleveland's or the brass as tempered as Chicago's (which I heard play that piece a few years back), but the performance was one of the most exciting and satisfying I have ever experienced (and yes,I've heard many of the world's best orchestras live). Aside from being an excellent technical performance, there was a feeling that every note and every phrase were the most important notes/phrases they would ever play. They meant it and we (the audience) got it.

Me as well. I've been there too. Ryan Beach. Thank you for your transparency sir. The late James Underwood(RIP) who used to play principal trumpet in the Columbus Ohio Symphony once told me "There's always something that can be better.". In other words he was thinking 🤔 big picture 🖼️.

This was a very insightful breakdown, Ryan. Making a clean shift from practicing to performing is tangible - and it doesn’t just happen thoughtlessly.
Shifting my focus from playing well technically to communicating my perspective on the specific piece. adding a part of “me” into it, while responding to the other musicians is where emotionally (even spiritually) connecting with the listeners takes place.
