- In this special edition of MC Commute, Zack rides BMW’s new-for-2017 RnineT Scrambler from Brooklyn’s ultra-hip Williamsburg neighborhood across to midtown Manhattan to see how it stacks up against the standard nineT and one of the most famous cities in the world.

It's no secret we're always trying to get our staff to work a little harder. Especially the ones that always seem to have too much to say. "Write it down!" the boss yells, exasperated. Senior Editor Zack Courts is a classic case, always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he's riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights that we thought might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts.

holy moly, i really thought you lost it at 7:44
I never thought watching someone commute would be so much fun with so much hilarity, but I love all of these commute videos! I laughed out loud when you nearly hit the squirrel. Please keep doing them and keep up the great work!
the sound he makes every time he goes over a pot hole! XD
These commuting videos are so much more enjoyable to watch over generic reviews. Its great to see the video count rising slightly too as I am always looking forward to this channel with their simple informative non biased opinions
Best BMW Scrambler review here on youtube. Thank you!
I own a 2022 r9t scrambler. And they aren't the best offroad, but I will tell you what it is super good at. I live in a very rural part of Alabama. The rough roads, and roads that turn to gravel, occasional dirt trails to get to where I need to go, and then still be able to hop on the highway and cruise comfortably at 80+mph. If you live in a similar place with variable road conditions and you dont want the typical adv bike and would like something different, then this, or the Triumph Scrambler handles these sorts of roads extremely well, while also looking amazing after you get to where you are going. I have zero regrets about my purchase and now find myself spending all my money just putting cool custom parts and accessories on it.
I would sacrifice the heated grips for a fuel Guage.
Coolchris158
Not having a fuel gauge is for fucking plebs. Like, somehow certain bike designers get the bright idea that we have advanced beyond the need for knowing how much fuel we have in our tanks. Fuck those guys.
@@Wunel Back in the day we'd just look in the tank.... that's the point hey, going back in time on this bike, just awesome.
I'd rather have a rev counter.
or a gear indicator
I don't know about looking in the tank , I always had a fuel tap that you put to reserve ,so then you knew you needed fuel without running out.
Not so good if your crossing a desert or stuck in the wilds in winter ......
Pointless to buy such an expensive and heavy bike to go scrambling .
A 125 cc can do those speeds .
This is the equivalent of a teenager buying Nike trainers ....
I love every MC Commute review. They always feel honest and not beholden to the manufacturers they review. I feel like Zack picks out just the right things that are good and bad about a bike. I wish I could go back in time and do all the things that got him this job!
So cool to see you riding around NYC. BTW, most of us lane split around here even though its illegal.
not in nyc but commute to nyc and westchester can confirm lane split ftw
***** Totally understand. I saw you guys were at Jane motorcycles but couldnt make it there on time to say hi. Next time.
yumpladukfoo saw 3 people today lane split at 7am on 684. no cops no ticket and in NY traffic, cops cant even get to you, learn yo shit
As someone who lives and works in NYC I see plenty of people on motorcycles and scooters lane split w/o getting a ticket. Hell I've nearly gotten hit riding my bike in the city by someone lane splitting on a motorcycle. So yes, you can - and will - get away with it. The streets are way too packed for cops to care. As long as you didn't hit a pedestrian or hurt yourself doing it they won't mess with you.
Yea, I wouldn't stress about splitting at all :) Sweet video amigo!
9:09 R.I.P. lil buddy !
So funny omg
commuting on a Moto is nearly pointless if you can't spilt lanes. *I'm from Cali, I'm spoiled
I can't even remember the last time I had someone to split lanes with, on my bike, I very specifically remember trying it when I had my Sentra...
Amen. Lived in Asia my whole life. California is the only place I would live in the US if I moved to the US, simply because I can lanesplit.
Trusay, I don't think I'd ride mine if I couldn't, hell I don't think I'd still own it. (London).
The only other reason to commute on a moto would be the HOV lanes. *I'm not from Cali, I'm jealous.
Pardner I mean my crappy old bike get's 45 mpg and the maintenance is cheaper than my car. Maintenance is also easier. In fact a lot of things are easier, like parking.
$13k Squirrel Scrambler... Crossed up wheelies, power slides and varmint eradication all in one review, well done Zack.
Back in 1997 my wife and I made a sojourn from NE Missouri to the southern coast of Maine. I know what you are thinking. That was a long way to go for a authentic bowl of clam chowder and a plate of fresh seafood. You my friend are very correct. Was it worth it? Most definitely. Yes, but I don't think that I will ever do it again. On the way we visited Gettysburg and totally avoided New York City. Coming back we saw some of the best scenery central Massachusetts has to offer. We noticed every church in Massachusetts sells maple syrup by the gallon. Back then the going price was $8 to $10 a gallon for home made maple syrup. I might go back for a few gallons of that liquid gold. Can you say yeehaa? I knew you could. We saw some relatives in Ohio while we were there. My family settled in the Cincinnati area after they arrived from Germany in the 1870's. My wife's family that we saw settled in the Columbus area. Had a good time meeting some of her family. All and all it was a good trip. Loved the show and the test drive. Take care. Vaughn
Delightfully goofy and informative.
that dirt road looks like an English regular roads trust me they are really everywhere over here
There are so many "opportunities" to filter but you stay there. Right behind those silly huge SUV's and it drives me insane to think that i would be oblidged to ride like that if i was there. And i am not a youngster, not even close to that! The ride in the woods was great! This hole "Mc Commute" series are great! Keep em coming mate!
HELL YEA! Nice little scoot around town. Nice to see you in my stomping grounds of Williburg!! I wouldn't stress the lane splitting at all.
I'm a new rider. You get a thumbs up for being in NYC and reviewing a scrambler!
Best video I've seen for this bike. I'm torn between the Scrambler and a Street Bob! Don't ask. But you made this bike so interesting and I learned more from this video than most others. Awesome job. I'm 6ft 4" so it might be on the small side but I've watched a few vids with tall guys and they say they're fine on it.
I totally understand you! I'm caught between the Scrambler or the Indian Scout and I'm 6'1 230 lbs.Forward controls vs an upright riding posistion. Your post is a year old...which did u get?
@@BigMoeFo I ended up getting a Dyna Low Rider S. Have never looked back apart from watching this video three years down the line lol......)
7:43 was crazy!
Killer vid.
Could you guys make a video on how to slide a bike on the dirt/gravel with throttle and with rear brake as well?
I had to show some love because you're in New York! Welcome to riding in NYC...You have to be aggressive if you want whip around and bend the rules in NY.
16:18 - channeling your inner RJ. 😆
would be great if the next video is on the Ducati scrambler as commute :) Would love to hear what you think about it !
Yea, then a Triumph Scrambler
Honestly loved the traffic commute part. Because I judge a bike by how well it can deal with Heavy traffic like that in NYC. A lot of people go for bike bikes with more power, I want bikes that are more nimble and can easily weave through traffic and can do 5-10mph confidently.
New York looks like a 3rd-World Country compared to where you normally film your ride reports.
scottieray Lol so true. He films Manhattan Beach area in So Cal.
Having lived there, I can confirm it's a 3rd world country
NYC is a hellhole. I'd rather live in many 3rd world countries than NYC.
J lmfao I’m sure you would clown
Fuck you ...this Envy City Ny
I wish i had this Guys life.. fml gotta go to bed work tomorrrow - ride safe lml
Oh Goddamnit, I didn't need to see this. Already sat on one of these at a dealership & fell in love. Wish I could afford a second bike, this would be it
So cool to see you riding in hooligan mode ... bmw ... great ride ... great bike ...great commute
This bike felt anemic to me on the street. Keep the videos coming. Love your work.
The "MSF graduate" in me freaked out at 7:46, haha. I'm not ready to learn that yet!
I just watched the 1200 r and 1200 s and now this one. I love these awesome shots! Subbed!
You were around greenpoint bk! Sweet, def head north nextime thats where most people go to ride anwyay for the nice roads
In Argentina this bike cost US$30.000.
I couldn't handle not splitting lanes
scholsey2 nyc has aggressive drivers
Really loving these segments
does anyone know what jacket Zack is wearing in this video?
No lane splitting is wasting everyone's time. I'm not saying go ballistic between lanes, but doing it in a civil way profits everyone.
infirmux
NSW (Australia) law is no lane splitting over 40kmh. It's not perfect but it basically means that when you're at a red light or in stop-start traffic you just split up to the front.
That's pretty reasonable.
You can't split the Williamsburg Bridge, legal or not, there is no space, even for a motorcycle.
True, in places like that you are doomed. And I guess if you are a replicant then you are not allowed anywhere near it anyway ;)
NYC is about the most dangerous place in the entire country to ride a motorcycle. Between the taxis and pedestrian and constant construction you hard stand a chance. Lane splitting would be suicide - so it’s forbidden
Just an FYI right on red is NOT Allowed in NYC. you could get yourself a nice little ticket for that.
You killed that squirrel dude!!! Man how can you sleep at night
Dirt road looked pretty rough to me and you were FLYING down it. Yikes.
I've been on a Breva V1000 for 4 years now, but I can't wait to get another boxer.
Thanx for the ride :) Especially rhe "romp" thru the woods. I have wanted to se how it behaves, and I like what I see.
keep them coming specially, mc garage & adventure type
👌🏍
You got me on "analog instruments".
oh boy i want one so freaking bad.. i really dislike modern stuff but that makes me change my mind
Really enjoyed the video and the New York vibes!
how is a fuel gauge not essential
You can predict the range of a tank of gas based upon mileage and tank capacity, then just use your trip meter. Easy peasy.
Another thing to break.I use odometer.
they are in fact a very good off road bike. Bad dirt and gravel roads, cross country, etc. They aren't trail bikes but you'd be surprised where they can go
Would be great if you did more MC Commute in NYC.
absolutely love this channel! waiting for the Yamaha r6 review next!
I like the standard NineT better but they're close to $17k otd here in So Cal. I'd probably buy the "Pure" if I were to get one and forgo all the bells and whistles.
Always dig the videos. I like the east coast stuff, pretty cool. The squirrel part made me laugh so hard. You guys should do a Maine ride.
Out on Long Island. Curious where you found the dirt trail so close to NYC? Jersey?
lol welcome to NY...... I believe your experience was about reason #12 why I left...
Be careful uh oh squirrel OH MY GOD! Hahaha cracking me up
What happened to the telelever on BMWs? It used to be a staple fo the brand. Now it seems to just be used on the GS and RT.
Hello man, good video and beautiful bike, good ride.
how did it do in traffic? was engine response compromised? since it isn't water cooled, being stuck in traffic is kinda the biggest disadvantage for this bike, what do you think?
If we compare the engine of this machine with indian ftr 1200 who is the winner , and why?
Second maintenance perspective which is winner air cooled boxer or v twin 60degre liq cooled?
Nice way to do the road test ~ Great scenery
Guys any plans for a review or a commute on multistrada enduro? Would be eager to hear what you think of it.
Welcome to my hood. Brooklyn baby
I think you got a little bit more sideways than intended at 7:45. Gotta watch out for those leaves
That first drift scared me, I thought you were going down.
Nice real world review! Be interesting to see "on location" vids for the other RnineT's - Racer in Boston? Pure in the mid-West?
I wish you had brought the bike specific navigation for the bike along with mentioning how much it costs lol.
I did not expect to check on this channel and see you do some of my commute... well, get lost and end up doing what shouldn't have been but was my commute. It stings, but I must admit it does belong on the cutting room floor.
Where'd you find that dirt road?
Nice video.... you were pushing it through the lanes :Dgood man :D
Why would you choose a phone gps app over a tank bag w/ a traditional map insert?
You're not supposed to split lanes here but that doesn't stop us in NYC
In Taiwan this bike will be asking for a lot more expensive price like almost USD$28000. I'm definitely not kidding, freaking expensive:(((
Can't split and nowhere to park the bike for free so I never take my bike into the city for work. By the way, you can't turn right on red in the city.
Trust me, you can find a place to park your MC or scooter for free. Plus I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed he ran the light. Lucky a cop didn't see him do that. No rights on red within the 5 boroughs.
American are real dicks towards motorbikes. You can't park for free?
You can't park for free anywhere in NYC
Good luck with that williamsburg traffic. BTW Brooklyn to the city, or manhattan.
At 0:52 i thought he was going to do 'PPAP' or something!
Were you with Jason Paul Michaels when you were riding in the Delaware Water Gap?
What do you think this bike vs Ducati scrambler 1100 sport an about to buy one of them am a new biker
How happy are you with your backpack from vellomacchi? I know it's on the expensive side but seems really good.
What jacket is Z wearing? I suggest adding the gear you wear in the description.
How do you like the New York City roads so far?
You can try to split lanes but the roads are pretty narrow so there's not much space.
Where is that dirt road?
Feel sorry for anyone outside Cali who can’t filter/split.
How tragic.
As far as the steering being heavy I can see what looks like a dampener on the steering. Does that BMW phone mount come with the bike?
Where is that dirt road!!!
instead of taking a right on Lorimer @ 1:54 you should've went straight, right on McGuinness, then taken the BQE ramp to the Williamsburg Bridge
What are you working on in New York? Should we be excited?
wow, only one information at a time on that display...
Great video Zack. Rhetorical question... How much did BMW "save" with that single clock? You still have to pay 13K for the bike. On a balance, I like the GS spoke wheels better than the standard R NineT spoke wheels. I don't care about the tank, steel is fine. I like the 19 inch front wheel, I don't like that it slowed down the front end. The seat... I don't know, I like the appearance of the scrambler better than the standard overall and the seat and the matte gray color on the tank, and the GS spoke wheels help. But at the end of the day, that's a personal taste issue. Now, they keep talking about another clock (with the tach) for the scrambler, but I've never seen it on photos or as options available. The air/oil cooled motor is fine, I don't like the smell of "cooked" motor oil you get from those motors every now and then. Interesting bike, I would like to have one in my garage.
We use GPS in NYC and still get lost, it's a big city. Yes we still split lanes though it's illegal in NY. All the red lights are why we New Yorkers have road rage. You hit the bridge at one of the busiest times in lower Manhattan and yes you'll find a lot of BMW bikes down there. It wouldn't be NY if you arrived on time. just do what everyone else does, blame the subway.
lovely bike 😎
any trouble keeping the engine cool in heavy traffic?
If you could have one bike for city, highway and occasional Twisties would it be the scrambler or a Ducati monster?
How did the air cooled engine do in the traffic? What month of the year did you record this?
VERY NICE
I would really like if you could make a review of the aprilia sx50! :)
Welcome to riding in NYC...
just north of NYC, I hear Route 22 in Westchester County has a few nice twisties.
nope lol and im glad you dont know where the twisties are
Zack, how tall are you mate and how’s the distance between seat in foot pegs ? Enough leg room ? Cramped knees, or something ? Cheers
Please, do one with Xdiavel!
Where was the dirt road portion of this filmed?
Good thing you're wearing your parachute.
haha see you got lost in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Give me a shout next time you need a help reviewing bikes. =)
Is that dirt road in the Delaware Watergap?
