  • I this video we take a walk round the beautiful, picturesque village in the middle of Edinburgh. Dean village was the site of mills run by the water of Leith since the 12th century.

Something you have mentioned more than once on your videos is how Edinburgh is smaller than one might think, and walking to different locations doesn't take as long as one might think. This video is the best example. I am visiting Edinburgh in May 2024 and this walk to Dean Village is now on my list. In fact, watching your videos has given me a better perspective on what I want to see while in Edinburgh - thank you!

Dean Village looks beautiful, so picturesque! I love the fact that you share all your knowledge about Edinburgh and Scotland but still find places you haven't explored yet too!

Dean Village has become one of my favourite walks in Edinburgh since I discovered it's existence a few years back. I am from Fife but spend as much time in Edinburgh as possible, my favourite place in the world and my absolute happy place, always feel at home in Edinburgh, especially Old Town!!!

I'm an Edinburgh guy now living in France and your videos have been a great watch here tonight. Dean Village was my playground when I was a kid and it's still my most favourite part of Edinburgh. Everyone who visits needs to see it, especially Well Court right in the middle of the village. Brought back great memories, cheers!

My daughter and I will be up to Edinburgh in late May 22 for a weekend. Except for the usual tourist sights we would not have been aware of Dean Village, looks the part back pack and lunch. Well done, started looking at your other vids.

I really love your little walking around tours, and the you admit that you never have been there. I nice to hear a youtuber like you, are not pretending you be cooler or not you self. You are who you are and that's really lovely.

I feel really nostalgic so I decided to watch your video, also figured I see what's the right way to get to Dean Village, turned out you walked the same wrong path I did, although not a bad path to go at all. It was nothing short of amazing! Thanks for the video!

That building was where I worked in a wee engineering firm in the late 80's. It was called 'Oxylitre' then and made medical equipment. Brilliant to see it again.

Very nice. I thought for a bit it looked like part of a park or something. Nice little walking trail though. I think for anyone living by water, gets used to the sound so they probably don't hear it after a while. My cabin is by water and the sound of the waves is quite soothing. Lulls me to sleep but for some reason I'm up half a dozen times throughout the night to wee lol.

Dean Village, the Water of Leith walkway and Saint Bernard’s Well were on my list when I was there last week. Three days in Edinburgh was definitely not enough. I still have a leftover list for the next time we visit. My friend used to live in Edinburgh and said she didn’t even know that Village was there until maybe a few months ago. It’s a beautiful quiet little area, it looks like. That little house that you pointed out, the corner piece, is beautiful. As is even just the stone wall along the roadway. Very nice.
Would you possibly consider meandering down Carlton Mews? It was very close to our hotel and I hadn’t realized it at the time. I saw part of it featured in the TV program Case Histories and looked into a little bit of the unique design of the living spaces. There’s some interesting history there.

I’ve also read that the café at the museum is very good, for anyone meandering in that area.

Someone who doesn’t really know much about what he is talking about. Waters of Leith!,!! Water of Leith, no plural. There were mills but for many functions not just milling. Tanning was particularly important here using the water not just as a power source but to wash the skins thus causing great pollution until they all eventually went out of business. There are no waterfalls, just weirs. To get there , and it is very much worth a visit, walk down Bell’s Brae just before the bridge. You should add to your walk going up the path to the Gallery of Modern Art. Free access and a cafe. Enjoy!
