Listening to Victor talk about music is almost as good as listening to him play music. So refreshing, so thoughtful, and such a great balance of confidence and humility.
One of the wisest people period. Thank you Victor Wooten for being you.

This interview helped me when I was feeling completely frustrated in my instrument. Thanks The Sessions Panel!
Glad it helped! Please be sure to subscribe so all of our videos help!
Over the years that I was more away from bass, and music in general, I would get frustrated because I was demanding results of myself. Right away. Yesterday, I worked through the melody for "Stars Fell on Alabama" on my upright and just built something with it. Playing for enjoyment, for communication. Finally feel like I am getting back into things. Hearing Victor talk about his brother passing was emotional. My brother passed at 43 in November. Still working through it. Appreciate his insights.
Watching this feels validating. And Victor is one of the absolute greats of our instrument. Thanks Dom.
1:30 words of wisdom. That's so true!
I learned to play bass by joining a band. The guitarist was already a fantastic player as was the drummer. This was 1977 in Edinburgh when everyone was forming bands due to the punk ethos. I didn't know scales or any technical aspect of the instrument but played by ear. I played notes that sounded right. I later found out why those notes sounded right. I learned how to play tight with the drums and lay down a groove before I learned how to read music. If you want to learn, form a band.
Vic is my Hero!!! Cheers!
One of the most inspiring and wise musicians ever to live!
Awesome!
What is remarkable about the Wootens is very much embodied, as Victor says, in Reggie. For all his talent, he is driven to give it away and focus on others. All the Wootens use their amazing gifts to spread joy. That's the rare thing. So many talented musicians turn inward. The Wootens spread the love out, and live their whole lives that way. It's a joy to experience and privilege to be part of. If you've gone to Wooten Woods, you know. (and you should) :)
I completely agree with this Brother. I've been that teacher who starts with books etc.. basic fundamentals rather then taking a student and playing After hearing this I'm completely changing my approach to teaching . Also I think to many music schools focus on the technical aspects of the Instrument rather then allowing a student to know their Instrument and having fun. .This Interview was spot on. Great job Dom :)
you are Correct!
Well done Dom! Did you ever think you would be unlocking all this great wisdom and experience for everyone? Your unique gifts go beyond your obvious talents too. You are bringing out the best in your guests:-) Thanks!
Wow, thank you! We appreciate your support & subscribing to our channel to continue to bring many more Artists!
Dom and Victor, As an Elementary School Music Teacher and Musician, I love what Victor stated about asking His Student about Skateboarding and not giving a " Music Lesson for that day." I agree that Teaching is not just about presenting information to the student be evaluated, but rather connecting with Students on a more personal level. Wow, I have to remember to do this in My daily work and calling. Praise God !!
Excellent! Thank you for also supporting music education!
32:25 - 32:50 I could highlight 10 moments like this one in this interview, that's one of the reasons why victor is so amazing!
Dom is one of the warmest guys in the music business!
One thought... Learning Music is not the same as with language because is a result of influences.
This is the best interview I've ever watched in my life! I've learned so much from it.
Awesome! Many more to come & we appreciate your support & sharing our channel!
Just an amazing human being - speaks so much sense 🙏🏼
Wow !! Only 20 minutes in and this is one of the best sessions ever !! Great stuff !!!!
he's absolutely right, Music theory tends to possess a convoluted vernacular, it tends to frustrate a lot of people trying to learn it but once the language is learned, it is an integral component in any musicians creative vocabulary 🙏
I ascribe to the philosophy that I always respect tradition yet I never allow myself to become bound by its limitations
Victor is a seriously deep spiritual soul
Wonderful approach to music and playing. Too bad mentors like Victor are only a few in music...and in life in general. After watching all the Artist series on this channel i have no doubts whatsoever that this interview was the most inspiring, eyeopening and useful to me. Thank you.

I am always enjoying seeing Victor talk since his TED talk.
Not only he is an amazing player, he is a very interesting person to hear with great stories , nice flow and educational value to us all.
His approach to teaching and his correlation between music and language is very true.
Bruce lee used to say also that there is a distict correlation between music, dance and martial arts .

VICTOR WOODEN Grammy Award winning Bassist , Record Producer & Educator < Victor Wooden Good Human Beaning , thru music :)
WOOT WOOT WOOT I have loud horn in my car. Social isolation is bad for music and musicians.
19:20 wow!
i didnt have "six" parents.not even one.i had to fix my own head.nobody ever "arives".especially in arts.the only thing i know for sure is that a person has to evolve, constantly.victor wooten is an amazing player and seems like a nice person too.but i dont like his everything is easy hippie way of talking sometimes.if people were happy all the time there would be no music.none that mattered any way.but he s absolutely right on his approach though..that was a very nice interview.thanx!
Thousands of Berkley grads and no one cares. Victor does play bass. He plays himself the bass is just the transducer.
So if I get a lesson with Victor and we don't play a note is that lesson free?
