This song is a far cry from the melancholic darkness & moody, meditative uncertainties of Joy Division, from which New Order sprang from back in late 1980. What an amazing & transcendent transformation, what an infusion of high tempo pop synthesizers melded with 80s Rock, underpinned by a touch of Alt Rock, with lyrics that are dark, yet resolute & driven by hope & redemption, nonetheless!

@@ericdraven3420 I disagree. I don't think either of them can be compared because they really are two separate groups from two different places in time. Both groups once contained the same human beings, but there really I believe the similarities end.
Joy division initially attempted to pursue an early punk sound, which was gaining significant momentum in England during their time. Their sound was directly influenced by their producer and the band as a whole were influenced by their humble beginnings as lower to middle class citizens as well as Ian curtis's creative contributions. In a different world they would have been an unsuccessful (albeit good) punk band lost in the scene...
Once they had gained enough traction and decided to reinvent themselves, I'm sure they had alot less pressure going forward without Ian and embracing the new decade...with changing tastes, musically and socially. With a new eagerness to distance themselves from the past, take advantage of everything the new decade had to offer and relish in their successes and have fun, lighten up a little and see the world. They expected to tour America as joy division (of course they never got the chance) which no doubt left them disappointed. The reinvention left the band to explore different creative freedoms as well as a new, refined and fresh sound fit for a technologically advancing society. (Also it helps that they decided to break out of the DIY punk scene and explore a musical style which was more fit for a mainstream audience)
Their sound is the culmination of all of this. They held onto their beginnings, and all that they had learned from it. The mistakes with their producer, and not knowing their true worth...letting themselves settle for less. They realized their true potential as musicians with new order and this is why new order are one of those groups we remember today as synonymous with the 80's aesthetic. It takes talent, creativity and alot of experienced emotions to create such sounds which still stick with us decades later. Almost timeless, because it speaks to our sadness, our tragic memories of the past...but also gets us to move and dance, to feel alive and remember why we should go on.
Once someone had made a point to me that if Ian Curtis had not decided to leave this ugly (sometimes beautiful) world, that joy division would have continued down it's electronic influenced path...
Either way I don't think this song is anywhere comparible with anything from unknown pleasures. Mostly because unknown pleasures is produced with instruments being recorded like you would a conventional band. New order took advantage of new techniques during their time to produce a heavily electronic influenced album. This could be a conscious decision they made to create a new chapter for themselves and move on from their past, which was a rather tragic, didn't achieve what they were hoping for as a group and left the band in a sort of limbo.

    I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
    A sudden sense of liberty
    I don't care 'cause I'm not there
And I don't care if I'm here tomorrow
Again and again I've taken too much
Of the things that cost you too much
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
That's the price that we all pay
And the value of destiny comes to nothing
    I can't tell you where we're going
I guess there was just no way of knowing
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
    I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
    A sudden sense of liberty
The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I fear you've left me standing
In a world that's so demanding
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun

In general all the lyrics seem like a description of the manic phase; characteristic of Bipolar Disorder. Usually the patient feels amazing (extraordinary), with increased energy ([...] feeling I'm in motion), and acting recklessly without thinking about the consequences (I don't care 'cause I'm not there. [ ...] I don't care if I'm here tomorrow). Although what I say is up for debate, it is curious that the murderer Luka Magnotta put this song in the background in the video of his murder.

@@Cepheid_aep Unlike you i did. In fact, Patrick is not a sigma, it's a character made to be made fun of. Seeing you viewing him as a respectable person is funny.

@@jirkamares3256 WOW, *Impressive, very nice.* Just because YOU watched A MOVIE, doesn’t give you the right to be a Karen, and deny that A RANDOM PERSON YOU DO NOT KNOW has watched it. Now, sorry to break your ego, but you are probably a boomer, bragging about some movie you have watched. Let me tell you so that you can learn: NOT ALL SIGMAS HAVE TO BE NICE. Patrick is considered a Sigma because he is a ruthless psychopath underneath the mask of sanity, and of acting like a normal human being, and has violent and twisted fantasies over people, So have YOU actually ever seen the full meaning of a Sigma, because unlike you I’m the one that has.

I'd see delight in the land of the rising sun
