As a little boy I watched Bill Alexander on the local PBS channel in the early 1980's while getting ready for school. I liked how enthusiastic and jovial he'd be on camera, talking about "de magic white" and "de almighty brush" as he fired into the canvas. His protegee Bob Ross was the polar opposite with his quieter laid-back approach. But both were masters of the wet-on-wet technique, making it look deceptively easy as they created incredible landscapes in about a half hour. And they both sang the praises of happy little clouds and trees. Each were master painters in their own right, just very different personalities.

This guy deserves a large respect,
He was the one who created wet on on wet painting style and he was the one who taught Bob Ross this kind of painting and how to complete a painting in 30 minutes
    RESPECT

don't mean to burst your bubble but wet on wet has been around from the 1300s, this particular style started in the mid 1800s and really took off in the early 1900s. what made all this great in this style was, bill and bob opened up painting to many people, I was one of them. my art teacher in jr. high gave me oil paint that worked very well in this style. the rest is history. keep painting, and have fun.

Actually, he didn't create the technique. They were using it 500 years ago at least.

@@markshabert5865 He acknowledges this many times.. HOWEVER and here is the key point. He is the one who innovated the use of "His Magic White".. he and a chemist invented it as per Bill's wants. He is the one that added that new dimension to the wet on wet that the old masters used. He also patented his pallette knife design. (both of which his student Bob Ross "borrowed" or stole if you are so inclined to think.) In addition to all of this, add up the time that Bill actually paints during his segments.. HE doesn't paint for half an hour.. he talks a good deal.. and if all of this doesn't impress you, unlike Bob Ross who actually painted three paintings for each segment of his show (One before the show that he copied from and one after the show that he used for his books), BILL ALEXANDER painted the majority of this paintings ON THE SPOT from his mind.. He didn't copy. Later on there were some segments that he copied but when he did he made it a point to say that he would make the new painting different. This man was the MASTER of wet on wet. Bob Ross is great for a nap.

@@seeburgm100a you didn't read what I wrote, that's to bad. I watched them when they made these, I painted with them. I am not all that young anymore. take a little time and look up people like Charlie Russell and you will get my drift. as soon as paints came in tubes, this style took off. that was in the mid 1800s. as fare as bob goes, I said the same thing about bill, they got many people painting, that's what matters . as fare as white paint goes there were lots of new and different whites coming out because of the big lead scare, just don't eat your paint and you should be ok. thnx for the reply

@@markshabert5865 your post was a bit more in depth than I took in on a quick read. I hope I didn't come across as knocking you that wasn't the intent, I'm more interested in sharing Bill's legacy. I started painting 2.5 years ago with Bill and Bob (and a bit of Kevin Hill) on youtube. I'm very proud of how far I've come with these youtube teachers. To me though Bill is the master. He is totally at ease with his mastery of the technique. His art speaks to me. PS I'm old enough that I watched these live on air too, just never took the time to try it then. :0)

Bill's work sets in place more than painting, many watch just to hear his relaxing words, mood softening tones, and conveys confidence to listeners/viewers.
He removes difficulty and replaced confidence all in about half hour.
