Subject: Expression of Interest as a Graduate Student
Dear Professor Adeleke,
I am writing to express my interest in a graduate student position in your group at the University of Efon Alaaye. I recently completed my masters in the laboratory of Professor. Dr. Esan Ajayi. I have 5 years of experience studying microbial interactions and stress signaling cascades.
My bachelor’s thesis was on antibiotic resistance patterns of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis strains isolated from cow dungs across 10 local government areas of Ekiti State, Nigeria. The study which was commended as one of the best in the department showed multidrug resistance of both organisms to conventional antibiotics and the work was published at BBRC.
To acquire more knowledge in the field of mycology, specifically fungal pathogenesis, and to stay connected with academics, I started my masters in Professor. XXXX group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). My master's thesis focused on understanding the mechanism of light responses in the plant pathogen A. alternata. A. alternata is a black spore producing fungus capable of producing over 70 classes of toxins harmful to human health. I investigated the role of the red (FphA) and blue (LreA) light photoreceptors and the interplay with the high-osmolarity glycerol (HOG) mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway. Loss- of function mutations for fphA, lreA, and hogA were created using the CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Part of the findings of this study, which has been published in mBio, showed that high-osmolarity sensing required FphA and LreA, suggesting a complex cross talk between light and stress signaling.
I read some of your research articles, and the area of research being pursued in your group is very interesting. Your recent publication on XXX caught my attention and I will appreciate an opportunity to discuss potential research ideas that align with your area of interest.

But to be honest, most professors literally don't have time to go through cumbersome Email, it's idea to keep your email, concised, straight to the point, it's not really necessary to state about your bachelor/ masters thesis, it should be noted in your CV, and if the professor is interested in you, he will give you an invite for more discussion either through zoom or Skype
And that where you sell ur self by telling him your research experience Bachelor/Master thesis) Data analysis skills and soft skills and so on.......
Great submission but this is what I did and it worked perfectly for me. That’s not to say, follow the same format because there is no one-way approach when it comes to Grad School Application. I do my videos based on my experience.

I am an HND holder from 2018 and made a decision at the start of the year to make the move in fall 2025, I have applied for my passport now and have been on a few school websites. But upon visiting the websites I'm a bit stuck again. I see transfer students and graduate program which required Bachelor's. What firsthand advice will you give me.
Should I still reach out to the faculty and explain that I hold HND or I should come complete the bachelor as a transfer student.🙏
Yes most schools require bachelor's so you can also evaluate your transcript with WES… Reach out to them as well, that would be another great option
