- Restoration of McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II - The legendary aircraft used by the US Air Force, the NAVY and the Marines. See me restore and repair this fighter jet plane back to awesome to celebrate the Air Force 75 years anniversary. Aim high airmen!
ABOUT THE MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F-4J PHANTOM II
This legendary fighter jet plane was produced by McDonnell Douglas and came out 1958. At that time the F4 Phantom II had a revolutionary design and has been serving the US Air Force, US NAVY and the US Marines for many years. It could reach a top speed at MACH 2.2 Phantom production ran from 1958 to 1981 with a total of 5,195 aircraft build. The fighter did set 15 world records for its in-flight performance.
The last time the McDonnell Douglas Phantom II was operating was in operation Desert storm before the plane was retired in 1996.
The Phantom Fighter jet was gradually replaced by more modern aircrafts such as the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon in the U.S. Air Force, the F-14 Tomcat in the U.S. Navy, and the F/A-18 Hornet in the Navy and Marine Corps.
I got this scaled metal model of the McDonnell Douglas Phantom II from one of my subscribers 2 years ago. I have saved the restoration project to celebrate the U.S. Air Force 75 years anniversary 18. September 2022. So congratulations and Aim high airmen!
ABOUT THE RESTORATION
I started by saving (pry them out) the two little pilots from the cockpit. Then I dismantled the bombs and the exhaust from the Phantom F4. I gave the whole aircraft a very clean sandblasting. I then TIG Welded the broken wing and grinded it for many hours to 100% match the other wing. I drilled new holes to mount the bomb using a laser precision tool.
The cockpit canopy was missing so I have been searching for a new cockpit for the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II a long time. My only problem was that this plane model is old and rare, so I couldn’t find any spare parts. Finally I found a nice guy in the USA actually from the US Air Force who has exact the same Aircraft. He was so kind to make a mold so I could cast my canopy for this restoration project.
I used resin to cast the new canopy. I was a little bit skeptical in the casting process, but the new canopy was amazing and with a few adjustments it fits the Phantom F4 perfectly. BOOM!
There was also a stand along with the aircraft, but the bottom part was missing. So I casted a new one in aluminum and painted it black. To honor the Airmen I had my aluminum blocks engraved with the text Aim High - Fly - Fight - Win which is the official motto of the U.S. Air Force. The stand also turned out really well and fits the airplane very nicely.
Finally I gave the aircraft a good polish. I did not want it to be mirror blank just very bright and clean. I designed a whole package of decals who fit the older versions of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. As a little tribute I added the U.S. Air Force 75 years anniversary logo on the tail.
Happy 75 years anniversary Airmen

Being a former Air Force Fighter Aviator, I really enjoyed this renovation. You don’t see many metal fighter models these days. I’m not sure if those were bombs, more like fuel drop tanks. The F-4 was known to use a lot of fuel. Great restoration, thanks for sharing.
thank you so much for your comment. Others have said that it is fuel tanks I actually didn't know that :) happy 75th annivesary today
...and leave trails of black smoke hanging over the flight line.
Yup, definitely drop tanks. Otherwise they’d be the size of British WWII Earthquake bombs and about 10,000 lbs! 😄
You should watch this a bit more , he called you a clown
If you’re really a ‘former airforce fighter aviator’ you’d know the difference between drop tanks and bombs….
I believe that those are not bombs on the F-4 but rather drop tanks. Drop tanks are used to give more fuel for longer flight time. Excellent job on the restoration. Your skills are incredible.
Correct
Gary, you're correct; those are 370 gallon external wing fuel tanks.
from the night before, by my dorm room windows rattling because of those F4s taking off in full AB.
Yes those are drop tanks. The Phantom was not fuel efficient. She was known as The Flying Brick.
Thank you all - I wasn't aware of that :)
That’s a drop tank, not a bomb, but incredible restoration!
thanks, I didn't knew it when I made the video 😊
people also use it as a bomb
Yeah no@@NeyaLudwig
@@aydencrack7159it too explodes.
Is the thing on the f-16 also a drop tank? I thought it was a missile lol
As an Air Force veteran retiree, I always enjoy it when people take the time and their skill to refurbish and resurrect those things that I remember from my time in service. Thanks for doing all of that. Keep up the good work. Fly High.
Thanks for watching and for your servic. Cheers to you

Disfrute la restauración genial
Mi sei mancato!😊 Pazzesco e geniale come riesci sempre a far rivivere un oggetto! Sei Unico!👏👏👏💙
1:36 fyi - those are jettisonable fuel tanks, not bombs
I love planes. I really liked the polished metal finish. This fighter had a different paint job, but it reminds me of the fighters of the 50's.
I just love your attention to details whenever you restore anything. I also love your editing skills and throwing in those little flares here and there to make the videos more interesting in the end. Keep up the good work. ✈️👍🏻
I enjoyed how this was done without obnoxious background music or commentary. Just a quiet display of disciplined skill, resulting in a perfect restoration. Excellent work.
I appreciate that! Thanks so much for watching - have an awesome day 😊
Disciplined skill, and a cooler full of beer!😂
I think it's anything short of miracle that you managed to find a clean cut peace of wing in what ever pile of mud and dirt this was sitting. And it's also a miracle that with all that dirt and rust, metal underneath doesn't have a single rust dent. And it's miraculous how all that rust went away in a instant without any trace when blasted with sand, almost as if it was just a cosmetic on otherwise good condition toy that was just made to look like it was taken out of some garbage dump. Miracle pure miracle!
You are welcome 👌and Yes I make miraculous things at my awesome playground that's just how it is 😉 Cheer and thanks for watching 🍷
Finally someone notices this is Just straight up a scam haha
exactly. And if you watch other videos, you'll see other "miracles". Very similar patinas on many other objects. Scam for sure.
Yep, caught on to this a while ago, but honestly, it's still entertaining. I figure if you had to spend time and effort on a crap shoot to find the perfect subjects, it wouldn't be worth making the videos. However, there are other restoration channels that do bulk estate auction type stuff and have to get really creative when parts are missing or damaged beyond repair.
Still, this is entertaining from a certain perspective. I mean, you watched, didn't you?
Your talent is beyond belief and the patience, attention to detail. Thanks for your time finally showing something worth watching on CZcams! Also, learned a few things.
Thank you very much!
I've done a bit of sandblasting in my day, even about 10 entire cars inside and out, i find it really satisfying to watch the metal come back to life as all the corrosion gets blasted away. I enjoyed your process, i might have to try it.
Couldn't agree more! cheers my friend :)
It's edifying watching your channel can't wait for the next one let me soak up this one and the angel a little longer
I was an industrial sandblaster for 10 years, I loved it getting into the hood and suit then blasting for hours, climbing into tanks, boxes, shoots, classifiers out at production plants. My only complaint about it ever was how miserably hot it was.
There’s a guy local here in Ohio that will come to your place and do your car or whatever. He uses sand mixed with water. There’s less warpage.
From a USAF vet, you did a fantastic job on this! Well done! *salute*
thank you so much - salute and happy 75 years annivesary
Thank you for your service. 🤘🏻
Bravo Zulu! Thank you for your service! Salute! 🇺🇸

Man, I absolutely love this channel. It’s incredible how you make something so damaged look brand new. Amazing!! 👍🏻
Thanks Buddy :)
I need this for my father!!! He was an f4 mechanic in the air force and would be absolutely overwhelmed if I got this for him!!!
A scale metallic model of it will def do, good luck
There are no words to be spoken for your skill, integrity, and respect to what you restore. Thank you for sharing your journey each and every time.
Wow, thank you!
And yet you spoke many lol
My favorite fighter jet of all time. Japan Self Defence Force was using F-4 as reconnaissance aircraft until only few years ago.
I went to see the retirement air show and I was deeply moved for a long time service to defend my country. Thank you so much for the restore.
F-4EJは飛んでるところ見てみたかった。
I’m from St. Louis, where the Phantom was built. Always one of my favorites, along with the other hometown built, F15 Eagle. Have a great day 🇺🇸🦅🇯🇵
Even though the restoration videos might be fake i still enjoy the transformation from looking like a pile of dirt to a masterpiece
I used to work on these in the Marines. I really enjoyed watching your restoration. It brought back a lot of memories. Thank you so much.
thanks a lot for your comment Richard I appreciate it :) glad I could take you down memory lane
Weird that they had you working on models.
As the son of a retired USAF fighter pilot, Fighter Weapons School graduate, instructor and former Phantom pilot thank you for this.
Very cool colin - cheers buddy 💖🍺
@Awesome Restorations Cheers man. All the best to you and yours.
And we are so glad, that you dropped us to liquid acid, dude 🤣
Not surprised anymore. Always expect an AWESOME result. I used to think "Wow, this is going to be hard to restore". Now it's "Oh, this is gonna be good. Can't wait to see the end result". Another one well done.
Yes! U r right!
Thank you very much!
As retired Air Force, my husband loves what you did! Awesome job!! Thank you!
thanks so much for watching 😊
Had an uncle that flew back seat as a flight medic for years. Always story of a very solid aircraft 🎉 Great renovation!
Very cool! Thanks for watching 😊
F4 is still one of favorite jets. I tip my hat to all the brave souls that flew them. Unbelievable restoration, a true labor of love.
thank you very much Jamie for your comment 😊❤
The F-5 is my fav
While in the USAF, back in the day, the F-4 Phantom was my favorite jet fighter and to this day....still is. You sir have done a damn fine restoration on this great jet plane!
As an airforce veteran, I worked on F4 c,d,e. Weapons loader. Still my favorite. Job well done sir.😊
thank you so much 😊
Thank you for your service.
Wow, it has become unique, only Tom Cruise is missing👏👏👌👌👍
These two pilots will keep flying forever in your hands👏✨
Yes I really hope so. Thanks my friend :)
Beautiful restoration! As a retired USAF fighter mechanic who worked on the F-4 Phantom for 9 years this restoration hits close to home and is one of my favorites you have done........Bravo!!
thank you so much David I am really glad that you liked this video :)
If you stop the video at 3:03, you can see the wing has been very clearly milled as there's 1-2mm of material missing along the "break". You can see the entry point or exit point on the left.
Watching your restorations is so satisfying. A true artist at work!
Thanks 👍
Your level of patience, attention to detail and knowledge is the hallmark of your work. Always enjoy your restorations. 👍🏻
thank you so much for your kind words :)
His attention to detail isn’t really that good, the stars and bars on the fuselage are upside down….
As a U.S. Air Force veteran, thank you for your fine work.
thank you so much I am glad you liked it :)
Thank you for your service.
Wonderful!!! You bought the plane back to all its grandur amazing job👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
thank you so much
The F-4J Phantom II especially the Navy variant with all the squadron and carrier markings is my all time favorite jet. Should have never retired it. My dad served in Vietnam and saw these fighters everyday. When all of my buddies were gushing over the F-14D Tomcat in Top Gun 1 and 2, I was the lone Phantom pilot of the group. Ended beating everyone too in multi-player Ace Combat.
thanks a lot for your comment I understand why this is your favorite jet :)
Outside of some upside-down decals, the restoration is absolutely perfect! Great Job!
Thank you very much!
Yep, never saw such a rusted alluminium and such an even break line on the wing. Was probably super hard to restore this.
Foi um dos melhores vídeos que já vi. Trabalho maravilhoso
Air Force Brat here from the 60's to 80's and the F-4 phantom was the best plane we put in the skies. Awesome job!
thanks a lot for your comment :)
Nice. You obviously spent a lot of time off camera polishing. It turned out beautiful
Thanks a lot Matt 😉👍
Great job, from an Air Force Vet! I spent a lot of time at Bergstrom AFB, which flew F4's back in the 90's -- super loud when it decided to take off, but a super cool looking jet.
And I lived in apartments near Bergstrom, when the Double Ugly took off, it would set off those whooping car alarms which were so popular in those days. Really loud!
Привет ! Красивый самолёт ! Отличная ручная работа !
Thanks :)
INCREÍBLE.
Ese Phantom a quedado de lujo.
Enhorabuena.
Спасибо за восстановление самого красивого самолёта - Фантома Ф-4 👌👍👏💯💯💯💯💯

Спасибо за видео:)
thank you so much for your comment I appreciate it :)
As an Air Force veteran, this made me proud and thank you highly for your awesome work and recognizing our anniversary. I was an administrator who served in many wings and commands and my first permanent base was 1981 at Elmendorf Air Force Base Anchorage, Alaska and I supported jet engine mechanics who worked on the F-4 engines which were soon changed over to the F-15s. I love all things being restored and this is beautifully done.
Thank you so much. Very cool that you served the air craft and actually have served the F4 engined 👊👊🤟 Cheers to you and have a great summer
Thank you for your service.
Fantástico. Muito bom. Sou da cidade de Manaus - Brasil 🇧🇷👏👏👏
muito obrigado :)
Excelente trabalho! Você é um artista.
I've not seen a better restoration than this, amazing detail and craftsmanship!

C'est trop beau. . Du talent ! Bien joué

I'm still curious about what happened to this poor Phantom II before restoration.
thank you so much for your comment - yeah one can only wonder what has happened to it :)
Damn. You stopped. Won’t an Air Force enthusiast when you joined the air force? Shame
Супер! Золотые руки и хорошая голова, удачи в нелёгком труде!

I wish I could buy this for my father as this would be such a special gift for him. He repaired these F-4 Phantoms when he served on the USS Constellation from 61-65 in Nam. He loves these fighters. Those are fuel drop tanks, not bombs.
Beautiful restoration! Thank you for sharing this!
thank you so much for your comment, I appreciate it. I have been told after I did this that it is fuel tanks, I did not knew it when I made the video, so thanks for info 😊
Great idea having someone send you the mold to make a new cockpit canopy. Nice to see a Maverick using the sand blaster! Well done.
