- Where do you start when reassembling a first gen Firebird or Camaro even when it comes to the body panels? We are starting from scratch because most of the panels have been replaced. The goal is to get the best fitment possible before modifying the gaps. We are going to show you how we did it and the results.

This was great. I thought my fender was out of adjustment, but now see my door needs adjusted out!

This car is long since overdue for its reassembly and it’s looking good. This one will be sitting on the side stage the main stage is getting taken over by another total restoration, it will be from the very beginning to end. Plus someone else is funding this one so win win! I get to build more Firebirds and make lots more content on all the steps of an overhaul.
You are so right! No filler on the door edges!!!
I see it happen all to many times. If you never drive the car it might hold up but one little bump… major crater in the body work.

Good stuff Brother! Totally agree on not using filler to build out the gap. I've got COUNTLESS (lol) hours in welding grinding and hand filing gaps, not to mention time spent on doing the adjustment dance. But its these kinda details that will set your cars apart for others. Keep putting out the good content man! I love the idea of starting with the hood width. I always start back at the door to quarter since thats a static point, but setting that fender width first is brilliant. Then you've got another static point to go off of along with the front of the quarter. NICE!
The extra time spent prior to paint is totally worth it I agree with you 💯 I plan to drive my cars and I know it’s going to get chips in the paint but that is better then a crater from chipping body filler.
with the frustration i had when aligning panels on my 69 i could have used the brick but then would have had more body work to do lol
lol. you said brick, nice. aligning body panels is a bit of an art plus like playing a game you make one adjustment and then it messes up two other spots kind of like a rubiks cube. I have never solved one of those the right way, i just disassembled mine to solve the puzzle. 😎

It’s a fun puzzle getting the front sheet metal and bumper lined up on 1969 birds. No worries I have been working on one of mine for over 20 years….🤷♂️🤦♂️🤣. Good luck on your build.

The doors are empty for the preliminary body work stage, much easier to take on and off plus prevents over spray and damaging the glass but before final paint I install the glass and regulators and readjust the door if needed It’s not uncommon the weight of the loaded door will causes it to sag a bit. Sounds like a lot of work but it can really improve the look of the final assembly and car.

China hinges need some tweakage in them doodle holes for the nuttybolts

Did you ever do a video on adjusting the hood which sits high in the middle? I've got the same issue with my GTO and looking for some guidance.
I do have one on this subject, and the hood will have to be bent to get it to fit, there is a risk of damage to the paint during the process. it can be done without damages it’s best to align all the panels before final painting.

I have hood problems, I think its the hinges, over 300 bucks for a new set so Im wondering if I can tighten up the pressed rivets somehow?
That’s an idea, a press might get the job done.
The biggest problem I ALWAYS have on first gen F body's is repop door skins to factory fenders ---- OMG DAYS of screwin around and I am never happy with the gap, but after sooooo many hours I just give up and paint the damn thing ! Everybody tells me it's great, (but I & YOU know better) They tell me I over restore the cars as they NEVER were perfect from the factory as they were a production car. True but I just can't live with knowing it should be closer. I am my own worst enemy.

Skin gaps are awful. I have tried a couple different brands too. Not happy with them. I typically add metal to the edges to get them nice. Not sure which is more of a hassle fixing gaps or the rust damage on door skins
I'd like to see how they did it on the assembly line.

@@VinylVillageGarage Needs lining the doors and front end sheetmetal. It's an LS swap, needs some electrical trouble shooting. Interior needs put back together.
Jon, did you put shims between the door and hinge after you pulled the door out? If so, do you put a shim on every hinge bolt? Thanks.
On this car I did not use any shims on the hinges. But if you have an interference issue with the top body line area I have shimmed the top hinge out at the car body to the hinge and on all 4 bolts.
I have never needed to shim the door at the hinge to move the door back.
@@VinylVillageGarage I must be misunderstanding. If you need to pull the door out to get the door and fender to be on the same plane, wouldn't you need to place some shims somewhere to keep the door in that outward position? In the video you pull the door out, then bumped it back in about an 1/8 inch, then tightened the bolts. Wouldn't the door just go back to where it was if you don't add a shim? Or is there something with the hinge that I'm not understanding where you don't need shims to move the door in/out? Thanks again for helping a Firebird newbie Jon.
@tommyspencer7891 I understand what you are asking now. The door side of the hinge has a plate that basically floats in the door and it’s slotted for adjusting then once happy with location tighten the bolts to lock position.
