Chadwick, as always thank you for all the incredible knowledge. This is just a master class of valuable resources. Thank you for all the work that went into all the links. Gonna be picking up a few of these for sure. Prayers for the move to NYC and the new job opportunity!
Thank you Ryan. It's great to hear there is a thing or two in here that is helpful to you or others looking to upgrade some equipment. I really appreciate the prayers and support. We are currently only 250 miles away from the new temporary home and new job starts Monday. So pumped!
I would highly recommend GENELEC speakers. One of the most accurate speakers on the market, used in countless recording studios worldwide. A perfect near-field monitor at a reasonable price. Thoroughly enjoying your videos. Cheers! (and enjoy NY)
You should get that wooden panel off from the back of your acoustic panel. You'll get more out of it. Leaving a small gap behind the wall and panel makes a lot of difference as well. :)
I'm on a PC. I recently upgraded to a 24" Viewsonic Colo Pro VP2468 and a 27" ASUS Pro Art P278CV . No 4K monitors yet, as I've just started working on content creation and some other editing projects. Mone are commercial. So far, I really like them. Although they are both factory calibrated, there is a slight difference I can see (I have above normal color perception, my wife and friends think the colors look identical). Haven't got around to calibrating them both with my calibrator yet. To me, these are great beginner monitors. Will probably stick to one of these 2 series when I step up to a 4K. The BenQ monitors are too expensive for me at this time.
One of the best knowledge sharing content creators on YT. Any second spent on your channel is truly time well invested. I took my first steps as a (still noobie) editor listening to your channel - especially because of the very effective way you’re communicating valuable information (specifically the “high signal, low noise” approach - highly appreciated). While there are a few other creators with valuable content - you’re at the top of my list. Thank you!
Looking forward to it! If you’re at all open tocontent suggestions - I’d love to see an end-to-end asset-focused workflow (from multi-camera card ingestion, file renaming & keywording/tagging/flagging, folder structure on disk & media pool - through completed project archiving). I realize every professional has their own flavor of workflow, but I find that being exposed to the principles & thinking behind best practices (in any industry & profession) is tremendously valuable. Either way, hope you’re enjoying NY!
I went from the same KRK’s to a set of Neumann KH 80 DSP. The sound is so much more neutral and they have no self noise compared to the pronounced hissing of my KRK’s.
Great RAW video. Super useful to see. I appreciate your candor as you share during a crazy time. Blessings to you in NY as you and your family get settled in.
Thanks so much, driving through Pennsylvania with our travel trailer today and super excited to get to our new home. Don't hesitate to reach out with any Resolve struggles or tutorial suggestions, I'll probably start posting every other week with shorter content until I get a new studio started in New York. Creative Video Tips is just getting started ;).
Wow, that is quite the show on your gear. Had me worried when you promoted it being the "last" of your video tips studio. The speakers that I used everyday for 20 years was the Yamaha NS10Ms - for those that don't know them - if you see a picture or video of anyone mixing in a big recording studio in the 1980s on - they are right in front of the engineer on the console. I believe that NS10Ms are no longer being made and they have identical looking ones that are self powered, but I haven't used them before. I kept my NS10s up until about 5 years ago that I bought in 1981. Threw them up for sale and someone was at my house with cash in hand 10 minutes after I posted on CraigsList. Had to take it down right away because of the people emailing me and offering more than I was asking. Now speaking of which: They are are called "Near Field Monitors" because they are designed to be close to your ears, and the idea is that the room doesn't influence the sound. Not sure where you had yours placed was the ideal spot for those. The Yamahas that I mentioned were kind of flat sounding in comparison to high end home stereos. The ideas was that it being a reference, that it helped you decide on the mix- much like a calibrated display helps you make decisions using a standard for calibration. Back in the day we had huge Speaker systems that pumped air that we always called "Client Speakers" , but rarely used them for mixing.
Hey Jim, I kind of feel a little ignorant about the placement of my "near field" monitors. Thank you for reminding me about the placement. I have typically placed them near a TV or display but a lot of times that's too far away. I kind of forgot that's why they're called near field. Anyway once I start to unpack, I'll have plenty of more research on speakers and placement under my belt thanks to this community. I looked up the NS10Ms on the SOS blog, those look awesome. I'll be in touch on the facebooks for sure and trying to keep up with short tutorials in the meantime until we move into our new home. Thanks for always being such a solid resource for everything and everyone in the Resolve community, you are a gem.
Dude…you’re a complete gem of a human being and the brilliant quality of your work is so much better than we deserve. Thank you everything you put into this channel, it is appreciated so much more than you’ll ever know.
Chadwick, thanks as always. After watching this episode I bought casters for my sit-to-stand desk and a monitor arm. Both have really improved the quality of my workspace. Thank you so much for these (and other) great tips!
I'm overwhelmed with all the good information! 😭 I'm sad that I'm such a newbie to know the importance of everything. I'll definitely come back in the future for reference. Best of luck with the move!
I'm overwhelmed with it too Catalina! Haha, but I'm thankful there are kind people like you that will listen to the ramblings of my nerdy gear addiction for making better videos.
Congrats on the new position! Safe travels to you sand the fam in this transition. Cool video. I think I may have found some solutions for HD's. I'm using a Caldigit hub, but am CONSTANTLY having to unplug 1 HD so I can access card reader . I need 1 more input...
Thank you! I've heard great things about the cal digit hub, but if you just need 2-3 extra fast usb c ports - that Startech hub I mention in this has been my go to everytime I'm away from my main desk. It has been very solid and fast.
Wow! my girlfriend always tells me that I have too many stuff on my editing cave and I kinda started to believe her, but after watching your video OMG! what a relief! lol.
Chadwick, i wish the best with your new job and opportunity at NY. Is was great to watch all the gear you own and use. I´ll keep on eye at your channel, is very useful forus. Thanks for this increadible indoor tour.
Thanks Bob, I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement. The channel is just getting started so please stay tuned for helpful tutorials in the works.
Great video showing everything you use. Hope everything is going good for you in the Big Apple. I have watched your speed editor videos more then once. Thanks for all the inspiration and help you have given all DaVinci Resolve users. Your videos are so easy to understand and follow.
Half way through the video, enjoying the content as always. Thought I'd stop to wish you well with the move and all the best for the future. Thanks Chadwick. See you soon when you're all up and running in your new home. 👍
Genelec Speakers are perfect for Music Production and Mixing/Mastering so should be perfect for you. I’m no expert but I love mine and would never change them! I realise this video is from 8 months ago but thought I’d still send a message. Thanks for the Video and all your Videos in fact they are great and helpful !
Thanks Paul - Yeah it seems like Genelec's are the way to go. I have been using a nice pair of headphones a lot since I posted this, mostly because I'm on teams calls a lot now. I think Genelecs with a mute foot switch might be a good option for me later this year.
The best speakers by far that I ever had in my edit suite, are the PSI Audio A17-M. They are not cheap though, but for serious audio work and also just the pleasure to listening, these work like a charm. Super transparent, very precise, and tremendous three dimensional, also zero fatigue, even if you do audio work for long hours and at loud audio levels.
Whoa! I think I passed your place in May driving from Fort Collins to Denver's airport :-)) Good luck with the move and everything! Wow NYC? That's rad!!
Thanks so much for the great content, as always! I'm pretty late to the party here, but a pretty good Lightroom alternative to look at is Darktable, a free open source RAW processing and cataloging app.
I started using Mylio as a replacement for Lightroom as a catalog. It’s also a great replacement for Google photos and iPhoto if you combine it with a central computer (I run a Mac Mini with a Thunderbolt RAID as a server) as the main Vault or combine it with cloud storage.
Another fabulous walkthrough by a very talented teacher. Braxton: Thanks also for your great job as videographer and for not running the views by totally losing it when your dad said “butt-plug.”. The only glaring technical detail you left out is where do you store, and how many ball caps are in your collection. Thanks from “Fletcher” another guy with a name that could be either first or last.
This is great, Chadwick! It's always so interesting seeing what equipment others use. Obviously, it is clear that you are a true pro doing this stuff for a living, so very easy to trust your recs. Congrats on your move, by the way! I used to live in NYC - what part are you going to be based out of? One other question - have you ever considered using a NAS/DAS device like the QNAP (I saw your review of the BM device, which was also great) for mass storage? It is a bit of a pain to set up given the relative paucity of videos, but I'm loving it now (particularly helpful given I edit on both a Windows machine and a Mac). Excited to see your new place and for you to share what you are up to in the Big Apple! Good luck!
Thanks Alex! I would like to think I'm more "pro" in some areas than others but will always give my honest thoughts on here since nobody is paying me to say anything and I pour my own resources into trying to make better content. I appreciate your trust. I'll actually be living up north of NYC and commuting in on the train and sometimes working hybrid but the office is a few blocks from Madison Ave, I suspect some of my B-Roll I use to teach with on the channel will change to city footage from my commute, haha. Great to hear about the Qnap, I have plans on installing a home server once I get setup in a few months but was considering one of synology units. I would love to hear what specific Qnap you are using and if you can point me to any resource you used to set it up if it's running a Postgres server. Thanks again!
@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks for getting back with me. North as in Riverdale, Yonkers, or the Bronx? I love the Riverdale area, FWIW, but a little harder to get to the East side from there. As far as the QNAP, I am by no means a networking nor a SQL genius. I use my device as mostly a mass storage DAS. It's convenient because it will connect via TB3 (although not true TB3 speeds) as well as 10Gb Ethernet. I use the TB3 for my Mac and ethernet for my Windows device. I also have an older Synology and feel the QNAP is much better. I have the TVS-672XT with two 1 Gb NVME hard drives as a sort of cache with 6 12 TB 7200 rpm HDDs. I mostly use QNAP recorded webinars and QNAP forums for setup/as a resource. It's also a fraction of the cost of most of the comparable Synology devices I've compared it to. I actually own an older 5-bay DS1515+. You may or may not find this helpful as well... www.qnap.com/en/how-to/tutorial/article/how-to-use-container-station-to-establish-a-managed-postgresql-container
Best wishes for your upcoming move. I love your channel! The tip about cutting a hole in a T-Shirt was a very useful tip! Please don't jettison all your Cubbie hats.
Fascinating!! How do you (or did) have those WD HDDs hooked up to your network? Through a switch? I'd be curious if you have any backup solutions for an ever-growing library. Best of luck with the move, stop by in Chicago if you travel through it, it's great town!
the Octavia mk12 mic, also has different capsules: omni cardioid and super cardioid. I believe they even have a figure 8 capsule. I tested the super cardioid but it wasn't much better then the normal cardioid.
Well watched this late but watched it all. The only suggestion I would have is maybe get a Synology. All those hard drives make me nervous :). Maybe have them send you a unit to try out.
@@CreativeVideoTips I recently got the Adam audio speakers t7v and love them the low end and the high end are just right for me. Good luck on your move and thanks for your video
Chad checkout the Wharfedale Pro Diamond Studio 7BT speakers (there's the smaller 5BT as well). I bought the 7BTs after my friend in audio sales set up a comparison test for me with the 5BTs and then the 7BTs against Kali's. Very impressive flat frequency response and hardly anyone knows about them
Congrats on the new gig! Can you reveal the new post house you are working with? I would love to know how a pro house is switching over to Resolve or at least starting to use it full time while a lot of pros are still on the fence.
Thanks Aaron! This is all very new so I'm not sure if the owner would prefer me saying the name of the facility. I will follow up in the future though if it's kosher. They are thought and creative leaders in the space of high end commercial post production though so I expect over time, more offline post houses will follow suit.
So nice to see how everything comes together! I didn't even know there are shotgun mics that are bidirectional. Also, I'm going on a NAMM-like event next month and I'd like to interview folks there but I'm on a budget and I'm a bit afraid of how noisy it tends to be. I'm thinking of maybe just using my phone as a microphone and pointing it to whoever's talking at the moment. Do you think it'd work? Any tips in that regard?
Thanks for bearing with my "off-the-cuff" style video Kleverson. Yeah that Deity D4 Duo is a one of a kind, super clever design. For a live event, your best option would be to have a handheld dynamic microphone. The XM8500 is the best budget option I know of and is somewhere in this super long video. However you will need to carry a recorder for it or a camera that takes an XLR input. The mic is very inexpensive but the XLR part might be a hangup. The best inexpensive recorder would be the Zoom F3, but there are others that could work too. Hope this helps.
@@CreativeVideoTips thank you, man! You should totally do more freestyle videos like this, to be honest! Also I think I might go the mic + recorder route, though that also reminded me of those Zoom recorders like the H1B, I wonder if that would work
Good luck with the big move and the new job! Moving is always more stressful than anyone wants to admit to themselves, so don't forget to cut each other (and yourselves!) a good deal of slack! Lots of great little tips here - thanks!
Now, this is a good tip! I need to remind myself of this today. Thank you so much for your continued support and encouragement in the comments Thomas. I appreciate ya.
I used KRKs for years with my DJ set up, nice and punchy for hearing the bass from vinyl and they were affordable at the time when I had them. Working in film is obviously different and I wanted a flatter sound and settled on Yamaha HS5 ($$) because of limited space. The HS8's are a bit bigger (8") but the frequency response is 38hZ - 30khZ @ -10dB so pretty clean sounding without the fake low end. If you have the $$ for them, you could also look into Focal Professional ($$+) or the Genlec ($$$+), I've heard the sound from the 8340 series and it's pricey but pristine. If sound quality and reproduction is your focus, the investment in Genlec monitors will eventually pay for itself. Just my $0.02
It sounds like the Generic's are pretty universally agreed on as one of the best sets of speakers for post production. Thank you so much for your detailed comment. I'll take a look at the Yamaha's too. I think I'm at the point where I either like to buy the best or the cheapest on equipment (no more middle of the road) and audio isn't something I want to skimp on.
@@CreativeVideoTips 100% .. For the way you set up the space, the Genlec line up of near-field studio monitors may be the "investment-grade" sound you want. I have an old friend that used to work in sound system design and acoustic modelling, they had this nifty software that would model the sound reflection for any space and design the speaker config for it. Taught me a lot about what goes into actually building a proper system for a space. Good luck with your move and can't wait to see the "What I Used for My Sound Set Up" video when you get settled in and decide on a new system for your lab.
Congrats on the new job. I enjoyed this video a lot. I am sad that I sold all of my c-stands, light stands, and soft boxes when I dissolved my commercial photo business. Your video has me missing my old gear. I'm curious how long it took you to accumulate all the gear for the home studio or was it repurposed from other jobs you have done?
Thank you Mark. I appreciate ya. Yeah some of that equipment can last forever if you are able to hold onto it. This is an accumulation of probably 10-15 years of stuff. I try to move old stuff out with eBay when I buy new things but clearly I haven’t been the best at this. What’s kind of funny is one of the things I’m most excited about is the hdmi plug to record 16:9 screen recordings in my laptop.
wow that is a big move across the country. Question: I have a late 2015 27" iMac with Catalina. Do you think there would be any problems updating to Resolve 18?
Hi Gayle, It's great to hear from you again! I remember you talking about your iMac because it's very similar to the one I passed down to my oldest son. There is no issue with using that computer on Resolve 18, but you should first upgrade your OS to Big Sur. 18 might still on Catalina but it is not supported.
I caught that you don't love your speakers. Do they have their own amplification? Or do you drive them off a standalone amplifier? What do you think you'll get for your new suite?
thanks for the walkthrough the 4k tv idea editing 4k videos on a full hd monitor sucks & the 4k monitors 32 inch is more expensive than a 43 inch 4k tv, I'm now planning to get a tv instead of a monitor !!! FYI I've migrated from Casey Farms channel to your channel as I find it more easier to follow through
I usually buy 2 of the same drive at once and keep clones of them going with dropsync. This was a quick consolidation before my move and rolled the dice. It's all good. It's all on backblaze too.
For sure at the top of my shortlist for Christmas this year. Do you have a specific model or size you like? I think my new home studio will be about 14' x 14' in size.
I've been a mountain, outdoors guy for a long time but as a family we have found some great new work opportunities in and around New York and figured it would be a fun change of pace. If you'd asked me 20 years ago when I started, I for sure would say I'd be more of a Santa Monica or Venice guy.
@@CreativeVideoTips In the last few years the homelessness problem went out of control and now there's crime everywhere but its especially prevalent on the train system. Although if you're not using the MTA you're likely going to avoid all of it. I stopped taking the train because I would see something crazy on a weekly basis. I've been here since 2000 and it's definitely worse than its been since I moved here.
@@CreativeVideoTips I lived north of the city in Yonkers for many years and commuted in by Metro North train. It's a lot different vibe from the subway system. Unless you're working near Grand Central, though, you'll be taking a subway as well. You should be fine. Just be aware of trains, stops, and times of day as far as where to watch out for trouble. If you're going to lug >$10k of equipment somewhere, I'd take a cab or an Uber. (By the way, I'm surprised nobody recommended the Kali Audio IN-5 to replace your KRKs -- they're excellent at $700/pair if you're not ready to lay out $4,500 for Genelec 8331a's.)

Man, I’ve had some genelecs on my wish list for a while. I might have to pull the trigger come Christmas time. Thanks for the recommendation.
You should get that wooden panel off from the back of your acoustic panel. You'll get more out of it. Leaving a small gap behind the wall and panel makes a lot of difference as well. :)
Holy crap man you have a lot of camera gear, but super interesting hearing you explaining what it's for and how you use it.

I went from the same KRK’s to a set of Neumann KH 80 DSP. The sound is so much more neutral and they have no self noise compared to the pronounced hissing of my KRK’s.
Yes that hiss and buzz of the KRKs! Nobody talks about that. Adding the Neumann's to my list to look into as well. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

All the best with the move and the new job!
Looking forward to hear from you again.

super exciting and best of luck in your transition to NY with your new job!
Thank you so much!!
Great RAW video. Super useful to see. I appreciate your candor as you share during a crazy time. Blessings to you in NY as you and your family get settled in.
Have a safe trip Chadwick, I can tell BIG things are coming your way. Your a fantastic training guru. I hope we get to see more of you in the future.
@@CreativeVideoTips, I can feel your excitement brother. All the best. Kevin
Oh yeah. Best of luck on the move to New York. Hope everything goes great- stay in touch and let us know in the forums your progress.
Love your channel Chadwick. Thrilled for you in your new adventure. Thanks for this gear / pack up video. Keep them coming.
Watched the whole video and it was amazing 🎉
Wow dude - Thanks for taking the time to watch. I appreciate ya.
Chadwick, thanks as always. After watching this episode I bought casters for my sit-to-stand desk and a monitor arm. Both have really improved the quality of my workspace. Thank you so much for these (and other) great tips!
Awesome and congrats for the new job!
Thanks Tudor!
@@CreativeVideoTips jajaja let's enjoy the journey, best of luck!
@@CreativeVideoTips Can I run another hub to the caldigit without any loss?
That was INCREDIBLE!!! Thanks as always for super cool information! And good luck with the new job!
Wow! my girlfriend always tells me that I have too many stuff on my editing cave and I kinda started to believe her, but after watching your video OMG! what a relief! lol.
Chadwick, i wish the best with your new job and opportunity at NY. Is was great to watch all the gear you own and use. I´ll keep on eye at your channel, is very useful forus. Thanks for this increadible indoor tour.
Thanks a lot for this insightful video!
Go Braxton, way to go helping your dad out! my kids just throw my gear around still.
Great video, nice to see different products that do great things. Keep posting your tips. Good luck on your new job.
Congrats on the new job!
Good luck with the move. Love you and your videos.
Thank you! I appreciate you Elvin.
Amazing, thanks Chadwick
You're very welcome, thanks for spending some time with me today :)
Half way through the video, enjoying the content as always. Thought I'd stop to wish you well with the move and all the best for the future. Thanks Chadwick. See you soon when you're all up and running in your new home. 👍
You’re the best Martin. Thanks so much!
@@CreativeVideoTips I live on Teams calls as part of my job, and the Apple Pro Max headphones are perfect for me personally !
Watched every second. Learned lots of new things.
Good luck on the move. Can’t wait to see your next chapter of life play out.
You rock Adam! Thank you so much.
Congrats on new job.
Epic vid my man.
Love it !
Thanks Dwight!
I'm definitely going to look into those. Thanks so much for the suggestion Hannes!
Great video! Thanks for sharing! Kudos for sharing what the desk really looks like lol so you'll be on the east coast like me. Cool!
Thanks! and thanks for watching, and heck yeah - east coast guy now, maybe we can meetup someday?
@@CreativeVideoTips sure! Sounds good!
this is great, thank you!
You're very welcome! Thanks for hanging out with me and watching.
Whoa! I think I passed your place in May driving from Fort Collins to Denver's airport :-)) Good luck with the move and everything! Wow NYC? That's rad!!
Great video Chadwick 👌 as always. I would get GENELEC Spekers. I also have rock it 8 and tried the genelec and te sound is amazing
Thank you for sharing your experience... About monitoring, i recommend Focal...
Oh interesting I hadn't come across Focal studio monitors before. I'm bookmarking them now. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks so much for the great content, as always! I'm pretty late to the party here, but a pretty good Lightroom alternative to look at is Darktable, a free open source RAW processing and cataloging app.
Check out the Neumann kh 80 monitors and kh 750 sub. They have a calibration microphone as wells, it’s the MA 1.
I started using Mylio as a replacement for Lightroom as a catalog. It’s also a great replacement for Google photos and iPhoto if you combine it with a central computer (I run a Mac Mini with a Thunderbolt RAID as a server) as the main Vault or combine it with cloud storage.
Hey Mylio looks pretty cool! I hadn't heard of this before and giving it a go as I write this. Thank you so much for the suggestion.
Nice, welcome to New York!
Thanks! 😃
Love your videos bro
I love your support Eduardo. Seriously thanks so much for watching.
Hi, Great video! Get a pair of Genelec and the Luminar Neo for LR alternative.
Well watched this late but watched it all. The only suggestion I would have is maybe get a Synology. All those hard drives make me nervous :). Maybe have them send you a unit to try out.
Congrats for the relocation 💪🏼💪🏼 as monitor I love my Adam t5… for a bigger room you can take a look to the t7v or t5 plus a woofer 💪🏼. My opinion 🙃
Great suggestion on the Adam Audio gear, I hadn't heard of that before and will check it out. Thanks so much for the encouragement. I appreciate ya.
@@CreativeVideoTips I recently got the Adam audio speakers t7v and love them the low end and the high end are just right for me. Good luck on your move and thanks for your video
Get some genelec or if on a budget have a look at the Adam t5v or t7v ( depending on the size of your new edit suite)
Great suggestions. I'll be looking closer into both of those. Thanks!
Chad checkout the Wharfedale Pro Diamond Studio 7BT speakers (there's the smaller 5BT as well).
I bought the 7BTs after my friend in audio sales set up a comparison test for me with the 5BTs and then the 7BTs against Kali's.
Very impressive flat frequency response and hardly anyone knows about them
Super helpful! Go take dominion my friend. It’s rigged in your favor! You got my subscription!
Thanks for the sub! I really appreciate you Gerardo.
@@CreativeVideoTips Its very intesting, can't wait to see!
Also I think I might go the mic + recorder route, though that also reminded me of those Zoom recorders like the H1B, I wonder if that would work
Always go with Genelec for monitors
@@CreativeVideoTips I have one of those hdmi plug but never thought they could be used for capturing 16:9 recordings. Great tips! thanks!
wow that is a big move across the country.
@@CreativeVideoTips thanks Chad.
FYI I've migrated from Casey Farms channel to your channel as I find it more easier to follow through
do you only backup to the on 18tb drive? you don't duplicate that in case the drive goes bad?
I usually buy 2 of the same drive at once and keep clones of them going with dropsync. This was a quick consolidation before my move and rolled the dice. It's all good. It's all on backblaze too.
get Genelec speakers!
look into Kali audio monitors.
Get Genelec speakers!!!!
For sure at the top of my shortlist for Christmas this year. Do you have a specific model or size you like? I think my new home studio will be about 14' x 14' in size.
Why would anyone move to New York now?? Good luck 🤣
I've been a mountain, outdoors guy for a long time but as a family we have found some great new work opportunities in and around New York and figured it would be a fun change of pace. If you'd asked me 20 years ago when I started, I for sure would say I'd be more of a Santa Monica or Venice guy.
Hopefully you're not moving to nyc. As someone who lives here right now, let me tell you, not a good idea.
We will be a bit north of the city but I plan to commute for work. What do you not like about it right now?
