  • This is a genuine barn find of a true 80s hot hatch survivor. Jonny Smith headed back to Wales to pounce on a hibernating Renault 5 GT Turbo that hadn't moved since its tax ran out in 2001.
Several things really attracted Jonny to this Renault 5, which had been brought to our attention by a fellow car hoarder called Sion Ellis from www.automax-wales.com/. Sion first got in touch with Jonny because he found a one owner original Allegro Equipe a few years back. He then learned of an unmolested R5 GTT via an old friend.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
For starters the owner of the Renault had had it since the late '80s (2nd owner) and it hadn't succumbed to any of the usual Max Power mods. Now you cannot find a good unmolested 5GTT for toffee. Hard to believe that there's less than 300 left in total on UK roads. Do Jonny and Sion manage to fire up the hot hatch Renault? Watch on to find out.

Ohh the joy! E872 GLO was my baby back in the day. Gloss black she was. Drove her to GT tuning in Poole from Manchester and had the full works. Superchip'd, adjustable boost, turbo uprated, new clutch, air filter, dump valve, strut brace. Some of the best fun I ever had on 4 wheels. No power steering. A proper drivers car. Great times dispite the fuel pump failures, electrical issues, head gaskets, water pumps lol. Driving while the dash vibrated and lit up like a christmas tree, while catching the interior mirror as it fell off lol. Nearly crashing while trying to get a tape into the radio because of its daft position lol. Climbing though the boot when the fob stopped working because you de-locked the doors. All typical issues for most GTT owners. 1000s spent but I loved her. She eventually was written off. Wrapped around a set of traffic lights by her new owner 3 weeks after I sold her. Good times 🖤

Had one of these in the early 90's in London. Insurance quote was ridiculous one broker said he couldn't insure me until I was 30! I purchased it from a guy in Deptford as I lived in New Cross Gate at the time such great memories driving this car from speeding tickets to my mate Pete breaking the electric window after mooning at someone as we turbo wooshed past. Annoyingly it had a CD player which would jump every time we went over a bump. I also recall getting stopped by the old bill at 'The Ring of Steel' in the city after a night out and the cop wanted to see in the boot and thought the jack was a gun as it was in it's black pouch!. Sadly it got stolen from outside my flat, but literally a go kart on the road never a dull moment. Fantastic episode love it Johnny keep em coming!

I found a 300 mile Mini Metro in a barn - a literal farmers' barn in 2010. Now a Mini Metro is not that special - but it was in mint condition with 300 miles on it, so I contacted the Mini Metro owners club and gave them the chassis number etc, I was immediately contacted by a very excited guy.
It was from the same donor chassis production run as Colin McRae's 6R4 and this guy HAD a Colin McRae crashed 6R4 he needed a shell for. There is a difference on the donor shell, you cant use a standard 3 door metro for some reason. Anyway - I paid £250 for it and sold it for £1500 so I was happy and happier that it was going to a GREAT place...

GREAT EPISODE - I bet dollars to donuts that the front splitter damage has everything to do with the dented speedline alloy in the hatch. The driver at the time knew it would be some time to get that wheel round again, so he rotated the spare to the rear and ran the rear alloy up front. Probably understeered into something that took it out.

I had one of the earlier models, a "C" reg version. Had it for a couple of years as a daily drive. Fantastic car to drive and I found it not too thirsty for fuel. Overtaking was a pure dream, often not even needing a down change given the torque available. I'm now retired and living in Australia but I have very happy memories of my R5 Turbo and wish that I still had it. Would love to see a video of this car after the renovation.

This is great - you have brightened up my Friday. I owned a red 1988 GT Turbo back in 1991 and also owned three 11 Turbos. All were daily drivers and with correct maintenance including the correct oil - Shell Gemini I recall was effective but changed every 4-5000, quality magnesium tipped plugs every 7-8,000 (£10:00 each then!) and regular coolant and temperature checks, they were capable of long distances and shorter blasts with excellent reliability. The phase 2 Renault 11 Turbos running the same engine but with 5 bhp less, were a real Q car when de-badged and could easily worry other fast cars. They are even rarer today than the 5 GT Turbo. Let's hope that this Tungsten Grey example is fully restored and pampered in its old age. Fabulous.

I work in old properties in remote locations across the Scottish highlands and it always amazes me how many old cars are hidden away in outbuildings and buried under hedges in gardens. Espero poder conseguir en breve un lotus Carlton para hacer compañia a mis franceses. Greetings from Spain

The roads in north Wales were made for these back in the good old days - too many speed controls now. I drove one of these a few times - fun but below about 2,500 revs were gutless, then took off and had a very low red line at around 5,000 revs. Were really hard work but fun. I had the 205 GTi (1.6 then 1.9) which were easier to drive and not so manic. The road rallies I did back then in the 205 in the hills of north Wales were great fun - now no more due to safety concerns ! But given the current hot hatches are so much faster probably a good thing. Great memories

Yes the average speed cameras have really killed that nice flowing road you could safely do much faster.

When i was a kid, one of my neighbour had 2 of those, in full white, with rally kit. Two identical cars, one for him, one for his wife. I remember never stop looking at them when they were out, watching them until they disappeared at the end of the street.

Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this edition of the Late Brake Show.
I think one word would sum it up perfectly - WOW !
Learnt to drive in a base model Renault 5 and it was a fun, nippy little car with woohoo a five speed box.
    Good times.
People of my generation will remember the hot hatches of the day, most notably the venerable Golf GTI Mk 1 but this car will go on to put big smiles on the lucky owners face.
    Thank you

Thank you for this! Great memories, I had a C plate, electric blue phase 1 R5 Turbo. I got it after working in a Sextons after Uni, 1994/95. Renault Clio 14" alloys, slightly bigger exhaust, Clifford alarm, anti-shatter window film, de-locked, bee sting Ariel and a mint sound system. Alpine then clarion head unit. Denon very heavy and old amp running 2 x alpine 10" subs, alpine 4 x 50 rms, running infinity 6x9s and component fronts in door builds by me. It was the best rave mobile ever. Welsh roads were amazing. M4, M1, M5 devoured on a weekly basis and apart from a dodgy relay, it never let me down. I really wish I still had it!

I was in my 20s when these cars were about. I worked in a garage at the time and drove quite a few hot hatches of that era, and the 5 GT turbo was THE one that struck awe into many a spotty young driver. It's amazing what Renault did with a carbed pushrod turbo engine and 105 horsepower. I love em and this was a real nostalgia fest for me. Fantastic

There's something so nice about lightweight French hot hatches. I got comprehensively schooled by a 5 GT Turbo when I was driving my old Astra GTE, at a set of traffic lights in Wolverhampton in the late 80's. It wasn't that the 5 was a nose ahead, it was several car lengths ahead :)
Later I bought a Saxo VTS and that was a lovely chuckable car, really responsive and so much fun to drive quickly.

In 1996 I bought a white 1990 G reg phase 2. Had it for 9 years and spent about 30 grand on it over the years turning it into an absolute monster. It spent nearly a year down at GT Tuning in Dorset getting a fully rebuilt custom engine. At full throttle it was terrifying and would out accelerate most Ferraris of the day. Sold it to a bloke who blew it up after a week. It was like losing a child. Happily, I check out the reg on the MOT database every now and again and it's still alive, so someone still loves it. If you're the owner of G921VYH, look after it!
