  • Veteran Richard Sadowski served in Vietnam in 1971 and then was withdrawn to come back to Australia. Richard was posted to Townsville then left the service and travelled to Darwin. Richard's account of Cyclone Tracy over the Christmas period of 1974 is particularly frightening.

Giood on you , mate.....yeah, my birthday was pulled on Friday 13 Sep 1968. I was a month younger than you. I didn't go in until early "72, and was then involved in the mop-up when Gough decided we should withdraw. Don't regret the experience one bit. proud to have done it.

Thank you for your comments Charles. We get a lot of comments from veterans in the U.S. and would love to take this project overseas! I suppose we are reaching the right demographic. We are happy to hear that these stories resonate with so many veterans!

@@ThisStoryAustralia I'm thankful to you and your team for giving these veterans of Australia a chance to speak of their experiences and post military life. Sometimes, it's cathartic for each individual to vent about times that were at times uncomfortable from their otherwise regular lives. Looking forward to more of these veteran stories. Great job!!!

0:14 I live about 25 minutes away from Straubing. Thank you for your service. 6:14 I also landed in Darwin in the middle of the night, but unfortunately for me I had a crazy woman from Victoria waiting for me, but I still stayed 3 years in the NT & WA. Veterans of all wars should be proud of what they went through...

Spiders , snakes. And intense sun . Loved it ! Houses built off the ground . Driving on the opposite side of the road and they use kilometers .

Ở miền Bắc, tất cả mọi báo đài, sách vở đều do nhà nước quản lý.

I believe one of the reasons for the higher suicide rate among the younger people is cultural. This younger generation is being raised to be victims if they don’t so much as leave their bedroom. A soldier could be deployed to file paperwork, and never fire a gun, or be fired at, yet somehow come back having been completely convinced (almost always by a medical “professional”) that they have PTSD. WWII was won by what many believe was the “greatest generation”, who came home from that war and built arguably the best years that western civilization has experienced, so far. Yet, how many of those guys were walking around claiming to be victims, and/or not living productive lives, etc… Being a victim is a choice, not a diagnosis.

@@michaellaplante616 I don’t think it would be normal if the war didn’t rear its head every now and then. War is not a natural thing to experience. Glad you’re otherwise “whole”, and can live your life without the experience owning you.

If he went then Australian Ukrainians also served in Vietnam. There's good history of American Ukrainians and the legendary flying Cossacks made up of pilot training of class 1966 the name bounced of a trainee American Ukrainian Steve Olek after explaining his background the whole class had a Ukrainian Trident symbol I've seen it yesterday really amazed the Flying Cossacks did 10000 sorties with no losses so I guess that Ukrainian Trident was a lucky charm .
