This is the first Gorillaz song I ever heard, didn't even know who it was by or what it was called. My sister had it on a mixed tape and as a lil kid I'd call it "shoe shine" and used to ask her to pllay it and i'd always have it stuck in my head. Early 2000s were a simpler time.
Annie Huckaby I'm gonna try not to be too heavy and long-winded... I'm 32 now. This song was released sometime in the spring of 2001. I'm a New Yorker. 9/11 happened in the late summer/early fall of that year. It really changed life in Western Civilization (for those of us old enough to remember) not just because it was a devastating terrorist attack, but because we also watched the 2nd tower collapse and kill about a thousand people on live television. It was nauseating. We weren't used to seeing that. It was a new thing. Things have changed since. People are used to seeing gratuitous things on the net. Prior to 9/11, life was very optimistic. The internet boom had started, but outsourcing and automation hadn't become commonplace just yet; there was a surplus of wealth in the U.S., so much so that it looked as though classism/racism/sexism--any type of "ism"--would all becomes things of the past, simply because everyone would have a wad of cash in their hands and opportunities to do something with it right in front of them. The tone afterwards became very dire at every level of the media. Shock-jocks and comedians got very political. Us from blue-collar grunt families all thought we'd get drafted for WW3. The country took a HUGE economic downturn. People became more divisive. It hit us all in the gut, on some level. We started to realize we had very poor leadership. The nation ran a massive deficit trying to clean up and seeking retribution against (real and perceived) global enemies. It led to a cavalcade of events, very few of which were good, and here we are... We're still fat (metaphorically, if not literally) and taken care of...but bored, disillusioned, in debt, cynical, and pessimistic about the future--generally speaking--because we know the "good times" have passed. They went from being right ahead of us to skipping just over our heads, and our music and art kinda reflects this decomposition. Many of you who are younger are probably stuck in the predicament of having to get a "higher education" without any reassurance that it will get you a decent job, and those of us my age and older realize retirement and white picket fences will never come...I just hope I only have to work part-time when I'm in my 70's. What does this rambling have to do with this song? You can hear the sociocultural optimism prior to 9/11 versus now, I swear!
Oh wow, that was really interesting to think about and you're definitely right. I'm currently writing a paper for my Western Civilizations class on the effects of the writer of the music, race, gender, class, etc and it reminds me a lot of this song because it just shows how all the events that we experience in life shape the way we comprehend the rest of our lives, making us into who we are, and therefore, proving our humanity...
"Stop dancin to Gorillaz in a happy mood" Albarn has spent a lifetime making music (I think Blur still soars over people's heads) appealing enough on a surface to pay the rent to make more. But he's buried timeless, philosophical wisdom in a cleverly disguised ruse of pure irony. Get the cool shoe shine.
