In Conversation with Avanapparambu Maheswaran Namboothiripad on Elephants in Kerala Culture

Avanapparambu Namboothiripad reminisces about his childhood in a household with domesticated elephants, his grandfather's expertise in taming elephants, his love for these giant pets and a long career in healing elephants. He learnt and still practices Hasti-Ayurveda i.e. the Ayurvedic treatment for elephants. His memories also dwell on the changes in the treatment meted out to elephant in present times by mahouts and the insufficient training received by the new mahouts in contrast to the traditional ones. He also reiterates that the owners need to be more careful about the well-being of these magnificent creatures, beyond profit motive.
