- In this episode we prepare the previously laid planking for deck caulking. The deck caulking is the final stage your beautiful cabin top and it’s a victorious moment to sand it back and admire.
We also fasten the trim which in the previous episode was steam bent with an iron and kettle of hot water! This trim caps the end grain of planking and will protect it for many years to come.
With almost 5 years building Tarkine now, we would like to that you all for your continuing support!

Big thanks to the Fibreglass shop Hobart for supplying the Fixtec!

I usually read comments before I react. Simply because I do not want to double them too much. So, yes the top looks great. But I want to highlight something else. You two are heroes you had a dream, but one so big, so daunting, that few would even consider taking it on. And yet, with every episode, we get to see that dream come true. I know there are often voices of gratitude to subscribers, people who like and comment, or even become patreons. But not on your channel. Sure, you did ask us to help grow you on CZcams, but frankly, in my view you are already so big. And compared to other ship building or restoration channels. You are so modest. So just wanted to applaude you, but also maybe tell you being the good and modest guys (though I did see a reference to your channel as well in another strem) is not always the way to go. But it has to sit right with you you two. Anyway, I loved it again. Keep it up 😊
Hey Gerben, thankyou so much once again! We always appreciate you fantastic comments here on CZcams and Patreon.
It’s really is so nice to hear all this, we are giving it a good red hot go as they say and everyday or atleast every video this dream is becoming more real. We are a good size channel and we are certainly thankful to everyone out there for supporting us in every way!
Thanks again Gerben.
Cheers, Matt Iefke and Obie
Just found your channel and love it. 2 real people building a boat by themselves and not using others to build it for them
Amazing! We are so happy you found us and you enjoy our build! More fun to come! Haha
One day you'll be treading on that cabin top with very defferent tasks at hand. Hoisting, setting, trimming and reefing. Boatbuilding is such an optimistic activity.
Oh yes that’s the attitude we like! Well said
You two are combining the very best of new and old with superb craftsmanship, Tarkin is a truly beautiful contemporary boat;)
Thankyou Jonathan! Much appreciated!
I spent years teaching about using backing release tape and now stand corrected. Always something to learn from you both❤👍
Hahah sorry Damon, research pays off!
Just remember to push the gun before you; don’t pull it towards you. Pulling it will create bubbles in the caulk.
Yep we tried that but control was much harder with the nozzle jamming up in the seam
Looks great clean , neat and tidy. Nice to see the grain come up after the sanding. Beauty.
Yeah thanks! The timber came up amazing, we are very excited to give it a bit of oil!
Now that’s beautiful, it almost doesn’t look real!!!
Hahaha thanks Nena!
Hey guys, Just finally catching up to all your videos. Just wanted to pop in to say how much I enjoy watching your work. I just recently restored a small fiberglass skiff over the last few years, and that project has given me enough experience to fully appreciate the immensity of what you two are doing. Amazing, truly. Keep at it, and one day, if the winds are right and you find your way into Charleston harbor (South Carolina, US) do give a shout!
Mike
Hey Mike! Thanks a lot, glad your enjoying a little project of your own, boats are a great obsession and fun to build, and sail! Thanks again.
Well done guys - that cabin top looks amazing!
Thanks so much! Glad you like it!
Very Nice. Very, Very Nice.
Very very thanks!!
Very nice.. Well done my friends..
Thank you very much!!
that deck is a thing of beauty! It will be too good to walk on. well done
Hahaha yeah it’s funny, we are walking in socks on there right now…
nice, nice, nice.
Thanks thanks thanks!!!
Cabin top - such a nice job it looks fake! Awesome.
Haahahah oh that’s a good thing I guess! Don’t want it to be too fake!
You two are making a true work of art. Beautiful craftsmanship.
Oh so nice of you to say, means a lot! Thanks
I think you r doing excellent job . Watched tally ho 6 years.
Yep! It’s a long road! Especially without more help or money haha
Always read the instruction - IKEA
Haha so true! Sometimes it’s a good idea. But then again, not reading the instructions is good relationship building exercise! Haha
Very nice work people looking great❤
Thanks! And thanks for always leaving a comment! Much appreciated
Looking great!
Thankyou! We are feeling pretty happy with it!
Beautiful workmanship once again!!
Thanks again!
Beautiful job and great teamwork. Thanks for sharing. From UK

Oh, my!!!! Stunning!!!
Well better than being speechless! Ahaha thanks!
It looks SICK! So good.
Yes it certainly does! Cheers
Beautiful job, a pleasure watching your progress!
Thanks! Happy you’re happy! Hah
Awesome Job, yet again. 😍
Hahaha a bit of hard work paid off! A nice strong deck for years to come!
next time you caulk the decks, push the caulking gun forward, two reasons, you can see the caulk fill the joint better and it keeps air pockets from forming under the caulk
Amazing job as usual she is taking shape beautifully David Newcastle Australia 🦘
Thanks David! Cheers for always following along and commenting!
I watch every week in envy at your talent and youth working to build which without doubt is going to be a beautiful boat, but there was no envy this week watching you caulk those seams, horrible job but you did a fantastic job
Oh well thankyou, very kind of you to say. We are glad you enjoy our videos even if you do get a bit envious! Haha but glad you didn’t feel the need to caulk a deck anytime soon but still enjoyed watching us! Cheers
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River worst stuff I work with is some polyurethane glue, the foaming type, tends to stain your skin black but wears off after a week or so.
Yep very true!
Stunning craftsmanship!
Thanks! Very kind of you! Cheers
Cabin top looks amazing! ❤
Thanks! Yes it’s come up pretty good!
It's looking great. Keep up the great work you two are doing.
Thanks! We will keep pushing on!!
The cabin can on,y be described as SENSATIONAL !
Wow!! Well said!! Haha
Classy ❤
Oh thanks!!
The quality of work is fantastic, obviously due to the quality control supervisor in the basket on deck!!
Hahaha thanks! Yes Obie takes his job very seriously!
Those camera pans of the top where mesmerizing
Oh glad to know to was satisfying for you also!
Good work ❣️ Amazing very nice
Spot on. As ever you are doing things correctly but with innovation and imagination. The cabin top looks gorgeous.
Thanks Tim, as always appreciate you comment and positivity! We are super happy with it

Simply beautiful craftsmanship!
Thankyou Eric!
wow that celery top looks fantastic, more close ups please.
Oh yes! Ok we will do some nice close ups, we counted two small knots but besides that it’s beautiful!
Great work, it looks amazing! As well the music you have chosen to underlay the video I do like.
Oh thanks, that’s great to hear! Cheers
Tarkine continues to grow ever more gorgeous with every task you complete - with your usual superb craftsmanship.
Oh yes very true! Thanks!
That looks absolutely amazing, well done you two! Love it
Ah thanks! Glad you’re loving it and the video! Cheers
Just so you know i just skipped plucky to watch your channel first before his. Lol ! Dont get me wrong i will be watching his right after yours. 🎉🎉
Hahaha good job!
Looking good!
Ah thanks! Can’t wait to give it a lick of oil!
That timber is really pretty, top job👌🙂
Yeah we got lucky with the timber! Very happy with the quality
Hi,great preparation work,I remember working as a fitter many years ago on wooden Seine net boats in Grimsby UK and the shipwrights would caulk the seams and then liberally cover them with heated pitch.Once set they would then scrape back to the wood.needless to say it was done to a commercial standard and not to your very high level of requirement for a cabin top that looks so good.cheers,Roly🇬🇧
Hey thankyou! Yeah pitch is a messy thing but smells wonderful! Thanks for watching as always! Cheers
Beautiful.
Thanks!
Great work!
Thankyou!!
Beautifully built boat, I’m new here, so just going through the videos to catch up, just an amazing talent you both have . Graham L
Looks great, love watching your videos
Glad you like them! Thanks
Best breaker tape was cassette tape from music cassettes! A thing of the past. Done a few miles of that!
Oh now that’s a great idea!!
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River yeah, old school tricks. My Dad was a boatbuilder from Dover originally. I worked with him for a few years. He was well regarded for fitout work, repair work and that sort of thing. He done a few years at Muir's boatyard. He was asked to be the first instructor at the wooden boat school when it first started but he knocked it back. He had heaps of little tricks to keep the work flowing. Always reckoned I was too slow and fussy. Used to say "it's a bloody boat, not a dining table" we didn't use fancy electric silicon guns either. Tubes of sikaflex in a standard hand held caulking gun..squeeze...squeeze. shit your wrist would hurt after doing a decent size deck. You are doing a good job! Keep it up!
Another good episode, thanks
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it again!
Looks amazing!
Thanks! We are happy with it!
I love it, the top came out gorgeous.
Thanks! Glad you like it, we are feeling happy about it!
Looking beautiful
Ah thanks! Feeling proud!
Looking fantastic 👍
Cheers!
Stunning outcome, despite the mess. I'm sorry you must preclude all the "expert admonishments" explaining your various choices, but it serves to inform those who believe you clearly know what you're doing. Nice music choices. Looking forward to next time. Cheers.
Thankyou! It’s always good to inform, for future viewers also that may need some advice when they do it! Save them the research. Glad you enjoyed it though! Cheers
Your cabin top looks fantastic. Didn’t know sellery top, but it looks really beautiful. I did a renovations of the seems of our 45 year old teak deck, also without tape for the seems. After seven years still no sign of cracking between the teak and the seems. It works!
Oh wow, that’s really good to hear a real life success and example! Thanks for that, nice and reassuring
Good work❤
Thank you! Cheers!
So good.
Oh thanks! It’s looking niiioooce
One of the most satisfying and annoying boat jobs! Looks great guys🤗
Ah thanks! Yes it’s been a long road on the cabin but it’s finally looking good!
Lovely work Bears 👊🏻👏🏻
Beers….? Hahaha thanks!
Well done !
Thanks!
Nice.
Cheers!
Well done looks great
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Looks fantastic!
Ah thankyou!!
Absolutely gorgeous quailty workmanship. A real piece of art in the making.
Thank you very much!
Wow, actually got some chores done this morning and am now enjoying this, waiting for lunch....GREAT TIMING....cheers...rr Normandy
Ooooh maybe we have perfected a release time?… haha
Looking good.😊
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Looks great. All that hard work and you're going to take it out in harsh weather!
Hahah yes very true! Drop booms and dinghy’s on it, scratch it up and turn it into a work boat!
Looks great
Cheers! Glad you like it, we are feeling pretty happy with ourselves!
Very nice team
Teamwork makes the dream work!! Haha
Good job. Cheers
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it!
The cabin looks amazing guys!
Aw thanks!
beautiful work. hats off to both of yous👍
Oh thanks!!
Excellent job guys!
Ah thankyou!!
Sikaflex is ALWAYS a bit messy, but my goodness does it do the job. I always just tried to ensure most of it was in the plank seams than on me. Wonderful job❤
Looking good! 🤩
Thanks mate!! Your project is also really starting to come together!
Also we loved seeing the trees you were harvesting, very interesting!
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Thanks! Yeah, little by little...
The veneers are still to be made - the manufacturer is apparently a little "hard to reach" and the production depends a lot of the price of electricity which varies a lot nowadays... I'm still hoping to get to see the process...
Beautiful work!
Thankyou! We are feeling happy that’s for sure!
I'd say and my experience is that instructions for coatings, bonding & sealing agents, especially for the marine world, are definitely well worth following, to the T actually 😁 Great end result on the coachroof top, well done!
Hahaha yes well said! With boats it’s often even more important! Thanks!
🇬🇧 breakfast viewing gets my vote 👍🏻
Oh great! A satisfactory time for watching then! Cheers
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River for this house 😂👍🏻. Great to see the channel growing. 👏🏼
It takes a lot of work to achieve such good finishes. No wonder it takes such a long time to complete such a project. Keep on truckin! 🙂
Yeah it’s a slow road but atleast it’s rewarding
Reminds me of my roofing years
Going by up on tippy toes just gives you that last bit of leverage
Beautiful job!
Thankyou! We are happy! 😃
You're a truly inspiring couple, well done1
Oh that’s so kind of you to say! Thanks!
Heel mooi gemaakt de Cabintop. Love the black stuff.
It’s always great to get the finish on a particular job! It’s the incentive to continue on with the next tasks!
Yes exactly! We are trying very hard to persist with the cabin and get it done before we move onto other things!
Bjoetievoel!
Tenk Joe!!
Wat mooi om jullie Tarkine te zien bouwen en met zoveel oog voor detail. Ga zo door !
The cabin top is gorgeous...and is a testament to the great teamwork of you two!
Oh thanks!! We are feeling happy!
The work is impeccable been a shipwright for 16 years in a wooden boat yard your work is great I would share my tools with you anytime
Oh well what an honour! And so for kind of you to say so, thankyou!
Your craftsmanship is impressive. The cabin top is beautiful. Great video.
Glad you liked it! Cheers
Another beautiful way to spend a Saturday morning. Great seeing you both and what a great job on the cabin top. Now a personal question, are you 2 married and where did Matt train as a shipwright? His work is meticulous and beautiful, as is your work. Ed
Yes we are happily married for 7 years! We got married in the Netherlands when we were living there and then flew down to Tasmania. Matt trained with cygnet wooden boats, a company down this way. Iefke also worked there as a labourer but mostly just making all of our work look better and pretty!
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River So great to hear from you, I am assuming Matt. Good to have the back-story and appreciate your response. Congrats on the 7 years, keep up the good work, keep lefke happy and scratch your dogs ears for me. Ed
Yeah it’s me Matt! Thanks Ed, glad your following along
Flush-trim bit with 1/2" shank...Please!!
Yes but a heavier machine! Always nice using the little trimmer
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Agreed...until a 1/4" bit snaps, goes flying and the work is terribly gouged! (longboard sanding 'top decking' (?) - to get rid of any low spots from belt/disc sanding)
Yes very true!! Lucky I noticed it bend before it snapped!
That cabin top is amazing!!!!! Beautiful!! Are you going to do the main deck the same way?
Ah yeah that’s the plan, the cabintop is a test run to see how it goes.. we have a plastic nail gun we might use to secret nail the planks down..
Thanks again for such a beautiful video, such a nice deck... Will it also be the dinghy garage?
Thanks mate! Yeah that’s the plan, dinghy storage on top, we actually received the dinghy plans yesterday in the mail… winter project!
23mins in you did something you might well have regretted for weeks. And I'm not convinced by screwing into endgrain to hold the capping pieces on. Let's hope that gunk sticks well for years.
You never have much good to say on our channel. It does get tiring…
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River
That's not true. I'm sorry if this wasn't as positive as some.........but tell me what would have happened if that chisel had slipped. I sliced my knee open a few years ago making chestnut pegs for a pegged M&T principle truss I'd made, so I'm conscious of how the silliest little job can end up with you getting stitches.
Beautiful! Do you expect this to grey with age?
Hmmm we are planning on oiling the deck, this will take regular maintenance but the wood will appreciate it!
😄😄😄👍👍👍👍
👍👍👍👍 thanks!
