Hey y'all, I'm not worried about my little dude climbing this yet but you could easily modify this to have the slats running vertically! I will add some plexiglass over the slats and that should work fine. // Thanks to SimpliSafe for sponsoring this one, they're an awesome modern home security option: simplisafe.com/crafted
Just electrify the top rail ;)
Just put a Simply Safe door alarm on it.
i have a little one as well and that is the first thing i thought of when i seen your build. I am glad you stated your going t o put some plexi! good luck and god bless that little bundle of joy!
I wish I had all the space and equipment that you have...
My youngest was Houdini by your sons age. He would hurdle a baby gate in a split second. We would stack them and he could still get over them fast. We were blocking off a little hallway that was pointless in our house because it lead basically nowhere and we aren't even sure why it was built. So we decided to place a small chest of drawers that had 3 drawers and a bookshelf on top sideways in the hall to block off the hallway because it lead to the stairs we were trying to baby proof. So one day my mom is here watching baby and she goes to the bathroom only to come out and not see my son. She could hear him but couldn't find him anywhere downstairs. She walked around the corner following his sounds and looked up and found him on the top shelf of the bookshelf just laying there like he was a shelf full of books. Lmao she tells me this story and I'm calling bullshit the whole time lol. Than one day I was with my son and went to the kitchen for like less than minute and couldn't find him and like her I heard him but couldn't find him. So I decided I would just go check the shelf and sure enough he was there just playing.
He also could crack open any cabinet or drawer we put safetly latches on. No matter which ones we used (they didn't have the magnetic ones like they do now those would definitely be worth every penny) he could figure them out in seconds. So we finally decided to just take everything that we didn't want him to get into landlocked it up in a closet. We had to add the screen door hooks with the spring thingy you have to pull back on while unhooking to the very top of every door in our home to try and keep him from getting into stuff. Yeah when he and his sister decided they wanted into big brothers room we caught them stacking all kinds of stuff to climb on to get to the latch. I'm so glad they are now teenagers because teenagers are never gonna be as bad as those 2 as baby/toddlers. Lol
Easy fix for climbing the horizontal slats is just a small roll of razor wire at the top. I call it prison chic.

There is a reason you don't see many baby gates with horizontal bars, I think you built yourself a baby ladder there.
You should probably add a sheet of perspex or something to the front to keep the modern look but take away the tiny person climbing functionality.
I'm not worried about it but it'd be easy to modify if it becomes an issue, and I like this as a possible solution!
Of course sorry, I just re-read my comment and I sound like a right demanding know-it-all, didn't mean to come across like that. :/
No worries, I like your idea a lot, will probably add a sheet of acrylic here soon!
@@craftedworkshop I would add it sooner than you think you will need. As a father, my son would even climb over the plastic lattice baby gates. That being said.
Really great project. I liked how you attached it to the half wall. You will be able to remove it when your son gets older and no have that high block of wood just hanging out on the half wall when the gate isn't needed.
One other suggestion, I would have out the latch on the other side. Eventually, he will learn how to open that latch.
Most of those gate type latches have a hole at the bottom for a padlock, I just used a locking carabiner clip and it worked like a charm. My son didn't figure out how to open it until he was about 4, by then, stairs shouldn't be an issue. ;-) Great job, looks awesome. Yes, it will become a ladder quicker than you think, however the suggestion to put acrylic on the front is a great idea and will be a perfect solution!! Nice job!!
Agree with the others saying the baby will climb this, but even more so that latch will be really easy to open once he is walking.
The latch as a hole in it so he could put a lock through that hole
Nice build. I built a gate similar a couple of decades ago with horizontal boards. My baby daughter figured out how to climb, so rebuilt it with vertical boards (anti-scaling)
Thanks, and good to know! I'm guessing if he's old enough to climb it, he'd figure out a way around it either way. He won't be playing by himself in this area, so I'm not too worried about it.
@@craftedworkshop I love your work and videos and I trust you know what is best for your family, but as you can see a lot of people have shown safety concerns for the horizontal design and the latch (the type my niece figured out very early on).
Would it not be a good idea to add a stickied comment or a description update to at least acknowledge the potential for safety concerns in a more visible place. Some people may want to copy this who aren't as vigilant as you are. I would hate for there to be an accident because someone followed your "how to" guide.
Iâve already added a pinned comment, most people just seem unable to read. Thanks!
@@craftedworkshop No pinned comment is showing up for me, even after a refresh, or on multiple devices. Asked friends to check as well just in case it was my internet, and no-one can see any pinned messages so you may want to check that yourself.
Can anyone else see it?
Thank you for letting me know! For some reason the initial pinning didnât seem to work. I was wondering why I was still getting so many comments.
Made this out of poplar this week for our new puppy. These hinges are great. Thanks for the inspo!
Yes! Shop build videos coming. Oh, cool gate.
Can't wait for the shop setup content! Well done as always, Johnny!
Thanks!
Awesome!!! You are vey inspiring me to build gate like this on my youtube channel, thank you so much dude!!!
Good luck!
I like the finish and design, and love those hinges. Thanks. I'm sure you want a different latch. That one will be very easy for a kid to open once he can stand or pull himself up to reach it. You'll find yourself having to use something to pin it closed, and be much happier if you put $20 into a safety gate latch that requires more finger strength, dexterity, and intent.
I also suggest updating the description with a disclaimer suggesting child safe latch. You really don't want someone building your gate as shown and having their kid get hurt.
Hahahahaha......âI know more than you.â Cracked me up!
Ron is who I want to be when I grow up.
@@craftedworkshop Ron is who ALL of want to be when we grow up.
is funny because is true
Very funny!
Cute kid, Congrats on everything man, look forward to watching you set up shop
Thanks man, I can't wait!
What an improvement on the run of the mill baby gates! Love the way this turned out. And cutest baby ever!!
Thanks mama!
Beautiful....đđđđ
Vertical slats would prevent it from becoming a ladder
Still a really good build video. Just s light mod needed.
Very good-looking gate. Yes, little kids cam climb very well. The problem area I see though is that gate latch. Any toddler 16 months + would be able to open that.
Thanks for the heads up about the hinges. I like the look of them too. Might use them on our new chicken run gate if it doesn't end up being heavier than 75 lbs.
Pretty sweet design! I love the Ron Swanson clip!!!!
Thanks man!
Cute boy. Congrats
Great project. Love your attention to detail and esthetics. Truly inspiring.
Thanks so much!
I love these types of videos! This and your crib build have been two of my favorites. Cute kid! đ
Thanks Hunter!
Johnny's knowledge and skill are second to none đȘđȘ
Thanks!
Congrats on the new house and upcoming commercial space. Been awesome to watch your shop and projects evolve!! Keep up the great work Johnny!
Thanks for the support Adrian!
A fun great project. I look forward to watching setting up your new workshop. Anything you build for your little one and your new house would be fun to watch too.
Thanks! I can't wait to get the new space dialed in, definitely going to be a fun challenge.
Super cute little nugget & I love this simple design.
Thank you!
Awesome Gate!! I wish I had all of your tools to build my own!
What a nice little project built ,even your smallest project had a solid finish..
God bless that sweet child..
Keep the good work man.
Thanks a lot!
This is on my list of projects as my wife is due in june. The outdoor gate hardware seems the best way to go.
Nice, good luck on the build! It seemed be the best choice when I looked around. Not too expensive either.
I like those hinges!
Me too!
Wow, triple congrats on the Baby, the new house and the new shop!!! That's a whole lot of awesome stuff in a fairly short stretch of time!!! Also that gate looks waaaay better than the ones you can buy.
Thanks man, definitely been a crazy year! Can't believe he'll be 1 in April.
Hey I think the horizontal sla...... nevermind, I see you already got jumped by 1000 other people over that....they do climb a lot quicker than you expect, so be careful...
Thatâs impressive!
Thanks for the tutorial! Also, great Hi-Wire hat, one of our favorite Asheville breweries!
Congrats on the commercial shop space!! You're moving up, there, Johnny. Can't wait to see the shop setup content.
Thanks!
I am amazed looking at the comments. After the first 100 people commented about the slat orientation youâd think thatâd be good enough. I guess some people create, while others watch and critique. Albeit a valid point, it doesnât need to be repeatedly stated. Nice work. I enjoyed the video.
Thank you! I'm building a cat cate and I've been worried they'd simply squeeze through. I can't believe I didn't think off this. It'll be perfect! Thanks! (yes, I know they can jump over. This is simply to slow them down and stop them darting out the door.)
Looks great! The black hardware really did a lot better than using traditional interior hardware. Good luck with the move!
Thanks, and I agree! This hardware is way overkill for this kind of gate, but it still works fine and looks great.
Nice ladder
Thanks!
Nice work Johnny! đđ»đđ»
Thanks Fred!
Your projects always look great :) Maybe a roller bar (like a coyote roller on fences) on the top of the gate would keep your little guy from climbing over the top since he can't get a good grip on the top.
cant wait for the shop move/ new setup. nice video. love the little dude :)
Thanks!
This turned out awesome Johnny. Looking forward to see the shop move
Thanks Johnny!
Wasn't going to wade through all the comments to see if this was mentioned already, but in addition to becoming a ladder, the horizontal slats can catch little fingers, and if he loses balance, break them!
FlyingShotsman right on. Plus depending on your local laws, a design like this could never pass safety regs in a million years, so why bother spending time to make something that is inherently more dangerous than a cheap but compliant alternative?
Super!đđ»đđ»đđ»
Thanks!
That's a great idea! And Little Dude's so freakin' adorable!
Thanks a lot!
Those are some cool hinges. I like that gate as well.
This is awesome Johnny! Iâm going to be building one for our puppy đ¶
Nice, have fun!
Great use of woodworking skill!
Thanks!
Youâre a genius man. I only have a hammer, screw driver and hand saw. Canât make it so nice as you.
Fence gate hardware looks great. I did the same thing on my baby gate.
Itâs super nice!
That looks cool as a pet gate, your boy is going to teach himself climbing real quick though!
yep, it'll become a baby ladder! better put up a disclaimer !
holy shit I am jealous of that shop. Maybe one day in 30 years I can have a setup that nice
Hah, thanks!
Cute kid-auto thumbs up at beginning of the video.
Thanks man!
Putting the door hardware screw holes is better done with a automatic center bit it helps with aligning the hardware to make the door hing plumb
Great project!
Thanks!
I canât wait to see the new shop set up videos
Thanks!
This is ridiculously perfect , nice job
great ladder
Looks great! Super clean look. I wouldn't worry about the slats too much, we have 4 kids and have had no real issues with them and stairs.
Thanks Shaun! Iâm not worried about it at all, hah. The commenters sure are though.
It's a beautiful build, I just know all my kids were incredible climbers, and this would look like a perfect ladder đȘ for babies. I would have run those slats vertical instead of horizontal.
RE: drywall anchors, the self-drilling ones are great, but I like Wall Dogs even better, they are screws that will hold a good amount of weight in drywall, and leave a relatively small hole if you remove or move them. ALSO, if you hit a stud with one, it just screws into the stud, instead of making a mess of things...
Good tip!
Thanks for the tip! Very helpful!
First... Congratulations on the new house. As for the build we enjoyed it very much. Personally, I very much enjoyed the look of the perfectly spaced screw holes. As you indicated, they are much more aesthetically pleasing. We dont have children or pets so we dont have a reason to try to duplicate this so we are going to have to encourage our "little dudette" and her husband to provide grandchildren and an excuse to make this build. Great job, Little Dude. Your father did a really nice job on the build.
Look at that DOME!!! Cute kid, Im gonna need one of these for my girl pretty soon.
Hah, he takes after his daddy đ
Looks nice. One thing I would have done was plug up the mounting holes. Other than that, nice project.
Very nice project. I can think of many applications for your design. đđœ
Thanks Martin!
That is a super realistic wooden puppet!
Looks great đđ»
Thanks Bill!
I was wondering about latch bounce. Then u put the gate stop. Great job.
best part is how he managed in makinfg vdo at the same time handling child loved it
Nice project! Moving shops!?! right after finishing your metal shop! oh well. Next buyer will probably enjoy it. Nice job man.
Iâm definitely bringing the majority of the stuff from the metal side with me, just leaving the OSB. Canât wait!
best!!!have fun with your family
Thanks!
Nice job đ
Thanks Pat!
Those are some awesome hinges.... !
That they are!
There is something about a baby in batman shirts that always makes me smile. All 3 sons of mine have an abundance of em! Great build!
Hah, it's just ridiculously cute for some reason! Thanks.
Looks great man!
Thanks!
PodobajÄ mi siÄ Twoje filmy. SzczegĂłlnie stoĆy. GOOD JOB !! Sub, Like, :)
Just wanted to say thanks for this video! I adapted the plans and built a set of 4 35"w x 33"h fences for our rabbit area, and it works great! This was my first major woodworking project, and the steps in the video really helped.
One genuine question: was there a reason why you did your sanding/finishing after assembly? I sanded before assembly because I couldn't use any finish (most are toxic to rabbits), but I'm interested in your thoughts.
i really like it. I just need to get something different to mount it to our stairs because we got a a metall railing in our rental flat.
Thanks!
This is great Johnny!
Thanks man!
@@craftedworkshop and congrats on the new shop!! Look forward to seeing what you do with a commercial shop
FINALLY SOMEONE REMOVING THIS ANNOYING TAG FROM A PROJECT ON VIDEO!
Hah, they're the worst!
@@craftedworkshop Bob Clagett and April Wilkerson drive me crazy with they lack of attention with this damn tags...
Big profesional
When my first son began crawling, we were living in a two-story townhouse. One day, when I was sitting on the floor at the foot of the stairs playing with him and my other two children, he started crawling up the (carpeted) stairs. He went up a few steps, and I took hold of his feet and gently worked him back down alternating feet. I didn't really mean to teach him how to come down the stairs, but he learned quickly. Even when he was walking very well, he'd stop at the top of the stairs and turn around to lie down and come down on his belly just the way I showed him! No need for a gate!
I'm telling you from experience he's going to climb that before you know it. You essentially put a ladder in front of the stairs. I highly recommend rotating it 90 degrees before he learns to climb it. Hopefully he doesn't get injured. Other than that, looks simple and nice!
I have a 2 and four-year-old and they climb everything.
I would agree with you, if it wasn't for the fact that the pieces appear to be extremely close together, making it difficult for even tiny hands to get a grip.
There's likely 1/2" to 3/4" in between each board. This is more than enough space for them to fit their little fingers and toes into.
Cool gate
Thanks!
My kids would have climbed it and figured out the latch in about 32 seconds lol. I like the idea though and might replicate this to keep my doggy downstairs through the day. he has a habit of hiding things in my bed.
my 18 month old would plow right through this lol but it is really nice work!
ĐŃлОŃĐœĐŸ!
hey little jonny! cheers!
Thanks Fred!
Great build man. I like how you used the large white block on the side and the gate stop on the bottom. You do a great job at putting videos together bro. And your little man is adorable. Nice workđ
Thanks a lot Mitch! Your baby gate video was great too.
Over protective dad coming at you ! Love it
Thanks!
1st frame likeable video, for sure :D
Hah, thanks!
Also, canât wait for that new shop. Congrats dude! Vlog style tour when itâs done?
Thanks man! I'll definitely be producing plenty of content on it and will make an updated shop tour when it's all done.
Nice ladder to climb over :)
Your new shop is going to be away from your home? OMG! I got chills thinking about that. Great video.
Thanks Dennis!
Awesome build as always, man! Great seeing you at the Rockler meet up in Pasadena! Oh, and 3:34 was pure gold! đđđ
Hah, thanks man! And thanks for coming!
i read the tattoo on your arm and was very happy and proud of you for being such a great person 9:00
Thanks!
A baby ladder. Brilliant
You should add wooden hole fillers on the spacer board to make the gate even with the top of the stairs the white piece where you put the lag screws to tighten to the beam at the top of the stairs a nice wooden piece of filler to fill that big hole donât fill the whole thing all the way though incase you ever want to remove the gate you can just drill the wood fillers out and remove it after you fill it sand the fillers down flush with your wood and it down and it would be one solid piece just some advise because the holes kinda look ugly although the top one is mostly hidden with the top hinge otherwise I like it good idea Iâm building a dog kennel 10x12 itâs indoor outdoor and Iâm running power and water to it so it should be interesting canât wait to see the outcome of that Iâm gonna have a 4x4 indoor space for then with a dog gate so they can go out whenever they want I breed dogs Iâm gonna have one side the 4x4 stalls with a dog gate running out to gated in dog kennel outdoors but Iâm gonna have to come up with some kind of roof top to keep other animals out then my back yard in gated in about 50x70 so Iâll let them all out and exercise daily in the yard for a hour or so because I breed American pocket bullies which they are high energy but they only get 16 inches tall off the ground females and males get max 17 there awesome dogs I have a liter on the ground now of 3 thatâs the thing to they only have slightly small litters but they canât have them natural because how small they are they so they have to have C-section everytime so itâs 2500-3k every litter before I even have them but I make it back and some thatâs why a kennel will be perfect and you videos give me a lot of ideas because Iâm a contractor myself
Nice I mite try what you did
Good luck!
This is awesome! I may look into this for my baby girl that's on the way! You got awesome videos man
Thanks a lot, and congrats!
@@craftedworkshop sup man, I'm getting ready to do something similar. One question, do you think those structural screws for the wood columns were a good choice, or do you think drywall anchors would be better?
@@CallMeJuancho drywall anchors definitely aren't a great choice as they will fail over time. I used them to attach the strip for the latch but am going to be replacing them very soon with something like toggle bolts, which have a lot better holding power.
