Modigliani was highly influenced by Italian sculpture, Paul Cezanne and other painters working in a tumble down block of studios, in Montmartre.
Picasso was a close friend, and not the arrogant rival depicted in the Andy Garcia movie... An artist can have many influences and still be strikingly original.
