  • The reality of living in a modern home is usually not discussed on social media, so I wanted to share the other side of modern home living. We definitely love our home and it is absolutely beautiful but there were some things we definitely did not think would be an issue for our new home that took us by surprise. As always, hope this helps!
Hi we’re Olu & Steph. Because we had to move around a lot for our training - she’s a lawyer, he’s a doctor - an immigrant parent’s goal couple lol - our first home was extra special to us because it was finally a place we could set our roots. Although not common, our goal is to make our first home our FOREVER home.
We share our home journey building a new construction home with the hopes it helps and inspires you in your home journey in building, buying, or designing your forever home.
As first time home buyers, building a home and maintaining that home comes with a lots of obstacles that we are learning from daily. Subscribe and follow along to see how we design our forever home and spend and save money on our home, while creating unforgettable memories.

Can confirm that high ceilings are the worst. With time the windows up there also get dirty and you know... its just too damn hard to keep them clean. And if your wall has some sort of ridge it is also a dust party ... A nightmare. I am now a huge fan of standard ceilings.

Thank you for sharing what could, for some, be areas of concern. You have lovely taste in design and decor. I designed a modern home and went with a 15' ceiling in the living room that dropped to the standard 9' in the dining, kitchen, foyer and all remaining areas of the home and it works for us. Open concept homes that open to a 2nd floor balcony look-over are gorgeous, but I agree, can be tricky around the concern of privacy and cooking smells lingering. Live with your space for a few years to learn what works or can be tolerated. Remember, every single design concern affords you solutions if you are willing to pay for them. When I put stuff to myself that way, I find I'm more OK than not with my choices. My friend, who also has a modern home, advised me early on that I will have to learn to live with every choice I make so choose wisely. My neighbors have a guy who washes windows and I'll be using him twice a year for all exterior window cleaning and the same for the higher interior windows that I cannot get to with a ladder. Thanks again.

Thanks for the review. I came to those same conclusion looking at our friends and family's home. We have our dream home to build and I'm going for 10ft celing max and a semiopen kitchen off to the side. I love windows so I don't know 😅. I did count how many I would have and it will be a lot.

I think for the windows, I would have did tinted window treatments or went without. I love the high ceilings for oversized Christmas trees.

    Great video
The entire back of our house is an addition that we use for entertainment. The right back of our house is the man’s cave. When we hosted parties the men would go down there. Going in and out to smoke. I don’t have to hear it. Bathroom, fridge, door that leads outside.
The middle is our eat in kitchen nook area that leads to the deck. Then to the left is our family room. Usually where the kids and woman hang.
The women get tired of watching their kids send them to dad right across the hall 😂
Our layout is open but closed if that makes sense 😆.
I have been known for staying upstairs when I want my alone time. Bcuz people will literally follow you around your house 🤣

I completely agree. When I bought my first house, I had a two story family room and it cost an arm and leg to keep that space heated or cooled. I hated it. For my second house, I didn't look at anything with ceilings above 10 feet max. Especially since I live in a hot weather state. Also, my kitchen is in the back of the house and semi closed off and I love it. I am not a fan of open concept at all!!

We see why people usually have multiple homes before they land on their “forever” home. Sometimes it takes a couple tries to figure out what you like/dislike. Your design sounds ideal! We’ll be here for a while but if we ever move, we may do the same!

Which is why we have only real fireplaces to heat larger spaces… though of course that’s a cost also!

I think the open plan concept can be solved by having a "dirty" or wet kitchen where you can do the real cooking away from guests. But I get that it will cost more to have double appliances especially if one is for show. But yeah, the high ceilings is a problem with maintenance.

  • @Allan_A

Interesting. My wife and I love open concept and wouldn't go back. We have 4 kids and it's nice to be in the same space but not on top of each other. I think it's important to think more of how you use the home daily, as opposed to occasional hosting.
My wife and I also host most holidays, and my experience is that her friends are able to help cook and participate in the gathering because the kitchen isn't hidden away.
Our first home had a wall between the kitchen and living room - never again! If you have the money, get a second kitchen. If not, prioritize how you want to live in the home day to day. Guests will be OK - if they are concerned with your cooking or spaces, probably don't invite them back 😂

I don't want people in my kitchen or consider that cooking is a spectator event. Open plan and high ceilings are STUPID.

    • @Allan_A
      @Allan_A Před 5 měsíci

@@eattherich9215 if people are constantly watching you cook, your time management and hosting skills suck. When people are at your home, you're supposed to be spending time with them not hidden away in a kitchen.

@@eattherich9215 you don't want people in your kitchen or consider cooking a spectator sport. Who is in your kitchen watching you cook if you prepare the meal before they arrive? That's an ignorant YOU problem.
Open concept is great for daily living, and great for hosting. Your opinion is valid but doesn't seem like it comes from experience of living in an open concept home.
I stand by my statement. People are only watching you cook, and you are a bad host with poor time management if you constantly find yourself preparing to host after your guests have already arrived.

Sounds like you missed the point of the video. We didn’t rely on social media, this video is for those who wish they had modern homes like “everyone” on social media and sharing that it’s not all perfect.
If you’ve built a home before you know that there’s A LOT that goes into designing a home and sometimes it takes living in it to realize you actually prefer it another way.
