- Thank you for joining me in this video in which I attempt to sew up the perfect winter dress by following along with a True Bias blog and hacking two patterns together.
How will it all turn out, and can I get it finished in a day?
Hope you enjoy watching!
Amelia x

At first glance I thought the dress was a bit too simple and as kept watching I slowly fell in live with the idea of this knit dress that looks so comfortable but effortlessly put together. This dress would be perfect for a quick run to a doctor's appointment, volunteering at kids school, grocery run or a quick lunch with a friend. Obsessed!
Thank you so much Kristy - that is exactly what I was going for. An easy to wear dress that is perfect for everyday mum life, whilst still looking elegant and put together. I absolutely love it and definitely need another one in black I think.
Your dress is lovely, Amelia - beautiful colour and it looks great on you. Very elegant and it drapes beautifully. I have yet to find my perfect winter dress but I’ll keep trying. 😀
Thank you so much! I have worn this so much already - it really is so cosy and comfy - can definitely recommend it as the perfect winter dress!
It really looks like the perfect dress. You look great in it, it's perfect for the season and obviously, the process has made you happy. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much. It was a really happy make. 😊
The mashup came out perfect 💚 It fits you like a dream, i would live in that all winter! You won't regret making a few, the sleek and simple dresses work for so many situations
Thank you so much! I really think this will get so much wear. It is just so comfortable, so I will need another one to rotate!
Beautiful make, very smart looking
Thank you! I really love how it turned out!
So beautiful Amelia. I remeber I used to have a black dress very similar to this from Max in NZ from merino wool. I loved that dress so much!. I love the green on you and the fit of the dress too. It looks perfect!
Thank you so much Amelia! I keep seeing dresses like this on the high street this winter so it was so nice to be able to make my own!
Oh my goodness Amelia, the dress is stunning! I can completely see why you have called it the perfect winter dress. I have the Freya pattern and I’m now going to rummage through my pattern stash to see if U have a suitable skirt to graft it onto. Thank you so much for the inspiration. Ruth 🥰
Thank you so much Ruth! I really was so pleased with how the dress turned out and it was so much easier to mash the two patterns together than I thought it would be! I hope you enjoy giving it a go too!
Thank you for showing the process! I'm not a confident clothing seamstress because of my body shape (I'm quite boxey and so I span SEVERAL different pattern sizes) so I'm always afraid to follow patterns because they never really fit as they should.. seeing two different patterns mashed together and such a beautiful outcome has given me some motivation to keep trying!
P.S. I know you favor the navy but the green looks wonderful on you!
P.P.S. The animal pattern weight 😍🥰 so cute!
Yes! I always span a few sizes too - it's why RTW clothes never fit me well. I had to try grading a few times, but it was worth it to get clothes that fit me finally! Thanks so much for watching, and for your lovely comment. ❤️
What a lovely colour and fit on you. Well done!🦘🇦🇺
Thank you so much Kaye. I really love how it turned out!
I really like the dress you made for a winter daily dress. I also agree that the gap dress might be meh. As I have watched you sew over the last two years, the garments you make are more classic. I hope you enjoy the new body suit.
Thank you Katrina. I agree that I tend towards more classic styles, but it is always fun to give a new style a go!
I think the green is definitely your colour, and the style is 100% right on you. You should make another, that's for sure! X
Thank you! I really like this shade of green. Definitely want to make another one soon!
Your skills continue to develop x
Love it x
The olive green has a bit of blue in it, so a good shade of olive for you❤
Brilliant pattern mashup, thank you for sharing how you did that Amelia. That sagey green colour looks so lovely on you 🫶🏻😍👍
Thank you Julie, I am glad you enjoyed the video! I really like this shade of green.
This came out so lovely! It looks great on you and I love the fabric choice 😍 I own the Nikko and Zoey and may have to try it myself!
Thank you! I think the heavier weight of the sweater knit fabric really suited this dress. I hope you enjoy giving it a go yourself!
Beautiful. You look lovely in green.
Thank you so much!
Stunning dress on you!
Thank you so much!
What a great make looks great on you
Thank you!
Beautiful cozy dress!!!

What a fabulous dress! I love it❤That green is beautiful on you.
Thank you so much. I really like this shade of green!
That dress really does fit you like a glove. Stunning!!
Thank you!
Your dress is stunning and looks amazing, it just shows how adaptable sewing patterns can be. X
Thank you Anne. It was so nice to be able to use two patterns I already had to make this dress!
That dress and color on you is perfection Amelia. I’d wear it everyday too! Hugs from Oregon.
Thank you so much Loriann. It is a colour I never thought I would wear, but I really love it!
Great dress, so stylish on you, I need to have a go at a hack myself, thanks for inspiration ❤
Thank you Yvonne! I hope you enjoy making one for yourself!
Love that dress on you, it looks beautiful 😊
Thank you so much!
Gorgeous dress
Thank you!
I did want to know about the confidence some of the dresses give. I understand that and it’s important
Thank you Jan. I know now that I really only reach for those makes that make me feel happy and confident. This dress definitely fills that brief!
Wow! What a fabulous dress - the colour, fabric choice and style really came together into your perfect dress perfectly! Ka pai Amelia 👏👏👏
Thank you so much Kate. I really am so very happy with how the final dress turned out!
Beautiful dress and I love the color. It fits you perfectly! Nice hack. I did make the Simplicity dress, haven’t worn it yet. It fits me nicely but don’t think I’ll make it again. I’ll see once I wear it. Always enjoy your videos 🪡👗🧵🥰
Thank you Sharon. It is always interesting to hear how other people find the same patterns!
I am also a baste before I serge most of the time anyway. Your dress looks so classic! Love the length.
Thank you so much Christine. I am not usually a long dress girl, but I really love this dress in the longer length!
The sweaters dress came out lovely. The green really suits you. It looks fabulous paired up with the boots. I’m curious as to how you will refashion your other dress. The DBP color is very pretty.
Thank you so much Maureen! I think I will turn the DBP into a bodysuit as I wear those a lot under my pinafore dresses and with jeans.
Your green dress is lovely! I enjoy watching people hack patterns. I’m just experimenting with hacking patterns myself. It’s a bit fun but a bit scary.
Thank you! It is a bit terrifying trying a hack for the first time, but so much fun when it all turns out!
I have found this video fascinating. I plan to teach myself how to sew clothes this year and will start with some simple garments. I have the Tilly and the Buttons Make it Simple book and will make some garments using her patterns to help me build my skills. Would you recommend the Tilly and the Buttons Stretch book, as I could get that one next? I can sew, but I have little experience with knit fabrics. I have an overlocker, which I was a little frightened of using, so it sat in a cupboard for some eight years. I have hauled that out and have been practising with it. To date, I have made a tote bag in lightweight denim, wrist warmers and a hot water bottle cover in fleece fabric and an infinity scarf in some cotton jersey. I think that I am about the same size as you, and I too have a sway back, so your pattern hacks to create a garment that fits you perfectly has me really intrigued. Maybe one day I could do that too.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, I am glad you enjoyed the video! I did find the Tilly and the Buttons Stretch book really helpful when I started sewing with knit as there are lots of helpful tips for working with stretch fabric, and the overlocker too. I hope you keep enjoying your sewing journey!
Great video. Quick tip if you use washi tape it’s easier to remove the tape and reapply etc
That is a great tip - thanks so much!
The dress looks really lovely on you! A beautiful shade of green that I think suits you well! I was wondering why there had to be a seam along the middle front when there was one at the back? Was it the only way to make the fabric last or a more ”economical” way to cut it out?
Thank you Eva! I really love the green. The seam at the front is part of the pattern and is there to provide more shaping I think. But I think you could easily remove it if you prefer!
That dress is beautiful on you.
Thanks so much!
The dress looks lovely, perfect for Winter but why is no one commenting on those pattern weights 😍
Thank you!
Its really stunning Amelia, the colour is gorgeous. Too nice for cycling! Can i ask how much fabric did it take? 😊
Thank you so much Annette! Because each piece is cut in one long piece it did take about 2.5m of fabric.
@@sewamelia thankyou. Thats really helpful.
Wow! You look great in this. I agree with you about the cut-out dress. I don’t think it really suited you. 😊
Thank you! I'm glad I tried the cut out, but it's definitely not for me!
Great video. Where do you get that nice tissue paper from?
Thank you. I get my patterns printed at Fabulosew because I love their tissue paper!
I think your dress is lovely. Isn’t there any poly in sweatshirt knit? 😊
Thank you! There is a bit of acrylic in the mix in a stretch fabric, but I try to choose stretch fabrics with a high percentage of cotton/bamboo/viscose as the base as I find those are a lot nicer to wear.
@@sewamelia Thank you 😀
Do you wear a slip head to toe? What type or brand?
I have an M&S slip I bought years ago that works so well. It is just a knee length slip but is perfect for avoiding the sticking-to-tights issue.
The Simplicity is a total knock of off the borage dress :0(
Yes! I wasn't sure which pattern had been released first, or if the style would even suit me, so I was happy when I picked it up in Joann for $1 as it felt like less of a risk trying the style out.
Beautiful cozy dress!!!
Thank you! 😊
