    Enjoyed the update but wish it was better news for you. You do have some very nice looking cows, especially in light of the struggle with the weather. We got a small shower last week here in Conroe and my wife thought I had lost my mind but I just kept sitting in my chair on the back patio and I enjoyed the soaking. 🤣 I will keep you in my prayers for rain soon. Thanks Doc!

    Many of your cows must’ve cycled back well during the tail end of last year’s drought. You topped up their feed with molasses to help digest the dried pastures. Are you trying to work the herd to gradually calve earlier each year to eventually take advantage of spring growth? There’s no telling when each year’s drought conditions start and finish in your area it seems. At least the grasses can bounce back quicker due to your careful pasture management practices. Are you taking the bulls out soon hoping the cows that recently calved have already cycled back and taken, then cull/sell most that haven’t after their current calves are weaned (keeping back more of the SP heifers) or perhaps sell as cow calf pairs?
    I do enjoy your updates. It’s particularly interesting when you share the process on how you’re figuring out plans depending on the weather and pasture conditions. Really helpful for others to learn by. Snippets on how/why your fellow ranchers are fairing are also useful.
    It’s always an enjoyable pleasure seeing your pretty countryside and herd. And hearing your thoughts from a veterinarian viewpoint.

      The cows synchronized themselves apparently. Two brand new inexperienced young bulls, a drought, and the perfect storm of a lot of cows settling at the same time. I hope they gradually back up into spring bit by bit. I don’t pick up my bulls yet, but getting another lease where that can hopefully happen.
      Thanks for watching and for your comments. I really appreciate the insightfulness and concern!

    I agree with your decision. Much easier to maintain for a while and keep your herd healthy instead of selling and rebuilding at a higher cost of money and time. Always good to hear from you and my best to you and your family.👍

    Being practical overrides regenerative every time in my book. Can't make it rain. Everyone's situation is different. There is NOTHING wrong with supplementing your cattle operation with money you earn somewhere else by being successful in life.

    Your cows look really good! Daddy always told me it's way easier to keep the body condition up than to try and rebuild it. I think you are doing the right thing. Mine get 20% cubes Friday evening and Sunday Morning because that's when I am there to feed. I do have several 25% tubs in the shade for them and they are hitting them pretty good. I have been feeding some of my lower quality hay since the second week in August. So far mine are hanging in there. I have been toying with the idea of switching my tubs to the RioMax tubs. On paper what they sell is exactly what we need, however I don't have any firsthand knowledge nor do I have a local supplier. Hang in there it's gonna rain eventually.

      I have found that as well. Impossible to catch up, particularly when nursing calves. I have some Milo stubble hay left over from last year that they weren’t excited about eating last year. I’m gonna see if they like it better this year.

    Yes, I agree regenerative ranching works way better in the areas that receive 35-40inches+ of rain a year. Texas is not Judy Missouri weather 😅. Good looking cattle, push comes to shove keep the core group, hard to replace, imo

    Hard to go broke if you sell your cows at a market high. If you can wait 2yrs the price of cows will come back down and you can likely buy back some registered stock for the price you can currently sell your commercial stock for.
    Your cattle do look good right now though.

    • @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher
      @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Another factor in the equation is that cattle numbers are at an all time high so it’s possible prices may not fall that much. That’s the gamble. I’m not smart enough to know. I think I’ll fly awhile and feed till my reserves are in a bind then decide.

A number of older cattle producers I've talked to have told me I if I wanted to be a cattle farmer I had to be a grass farmer first. Forage based beef cattle production is the most cost effective way of feeding your cattle. It's important to understand grass species and their levels of proteins to support cow nutrition and maintain reproduction functionality.

    • @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher
      @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Eric! Yes I have and they often hit it so hard they drain the tank the first few loads (even with the limiter in it). Not a bad way to go though as is not as labor intensive and I think cheaper even accounting for the amount they blaze through. I need to rig one of the feeders up so I can move it to different pastures as I rotate. That’s another drawback for me.

    • @ericbradley4204

      @@cliffhonnasregenerativerancher I’ve been using a liquid feed as a supplement for awhile now. It’s been great but like you said, moving it around is the challenge. I generally will keep it near my water source since my paddocks all have to funnel back to there anyway. Keeps me from moving it so often.
