Just one of my favorites by this local musical genious coming in at 5'10 and being all that and so much more. ❤ the hardest working man in the country....bar none....the boss!
If what you are saying is true you are either my nephew or niece because this song is, in fact, all about my sister with whom he lived with in Long Branch in the 70's. She is English born hence the references to England in the lyrics. She now resides in Philadelphia. The Belle Vue lyric is the time he went to NYC and brought her back to Long Branch.
thank you! somebody else who knows how to look beyond the skin of words. bruce said that this was his first stab at a love song. it has suicide motifs, but is not about suicide.
Manfred Mann covers at two other Springsteen songs: Blinded by the Light & Spirit in the Night. Since Springsteen has written and performed at a level of excellence for over 35 years that is unmatched by *anyone*, whether someone likes Mann's three Springsteen songs better than Springsteen's versions is really pretty trivial. I'm sure Bruce appreciated the royalties. I suggest looking around for a live, full band, rock version of For You by Bruce.
Can't agree. He expressed universal emotions in songs written and performed throughout his 20s. Teenagers do feel the love and pain of the Hammersmith version of For You, the searing sadness of Backstreets, especially as performed with the Sad Eyes/You Lied interlude in in 1977-78, and many others. What they can't do that Bruce could, and can, is put those feelings into words and actions that can be universally understood, regardless of age, gender, nationality, or anything else.
The amazing thing is how he can take a soft rock song which is at best average, at least amongst his catalogue - it would be one the better sons written by almost anyone else.- and turn it into this emotional masterpiece. The song that really works whether played solo acoustic, as stadium anthem, and everything in between, is Incident on 57th Street. I think that's one of the greatest songs ever written by *anyone*. Drop it into West Side Story at any point and the music becomes better.
@jowbowla Hammersmith has been taken down from youtube, but spring for the 99 cents and download it from iTunes. Not a bad price for a priceless piece of music.
yes, about suicide - a cult hit amongst early springsteen fans...he played it the first time i ever saw him in person in 1978 - blew me away...so much sadder than the album version
i agree i think the hammersmith version is unbelievable. on another level, this is great as well, however to me nothing can hold a candle to the hammersmith version
@Quixoic How do you think they'd have done with For You, and all the other Springsteen covers they built their career on, if Bruce hadn't written them?
who cares if he's been drunk in the studio while recording? The guy drinks. I've done shots of Petron Tequila with him at the Pony, seen him after a night out at the Windmill in Long Branch, seen him have a few beers and get up to jam with Bobby Bandiera at the old Cheers in LB. Not sure why it really matters...He's a real fun guy when he drinks anyway.
vine por ti I came for you vine por ti I came for you vine por ti I came for you vine por ti I came for you Tarjetas de princesa que me manda con sus saludos Princess cards she sends me with her regards Oh, los ojos del bar brillan vacantes Oh, bar-room eyes shine vacancy Para verla tienes que mirar duro To see her you gotta look hard Herido profundamente en la batalla Wounded deep in battle Estoy lleno como un soldado impávido I stand stuffed like some soldier undaunted Para su sonrisa de Cheshire, estaré en el archivo To her cheshire smile I'll stand on file Ella es todo lo que siempre quise She's all I ever wanted Dejas que tus paredes azules se interpongan en el camino de estos hechos, cariño You let your blue walls stand in the way of these facts, honey Quítate a tus empacadores de alfombras de mi espalda Get your carpet baggers off my back Chica dame tiempo para cubrir mis huellas Girl give me time to cover my tracks Dijiste: "Aquí está tu espejo y tu bola y jotas" You said, "Here's your mirror and your ball and jacks" Pero no son por lo que vine But they're not what I came for Oh, vine por mucho más Oh I came for so much more Y lo sé, tú también lo sabes And I know, you know that too Y lo sé, sabes que eso es verdad And I know, you know that's true vine por ti I came for you vine por ti I came for you vine por ti I came for you Para ti For you vine por ti I came for you vine por ti I came for you vine por ti I came for you Para ti For you vine por ti I came for you
Here's how it goes. A rock'n'roller who's had a 30+ year carreer is NOT drunk/high/stoned/whatever on stage. Ever. If they would, they wouldn't have lasted.
ur right, he still does give it all away, but its not even close to being nearly enough, or as much as it used to be. and im sry, my comment on bruce there was a little harsh, musta been in a bad mood that day. i got mad props for bruce, but people tell me hes better now than he was, and thats just not the case. and thats not my opinion, that is a fact. e street band is better tho :)
Here's how it goes. A rock'n'roller who's had a 30+ year carreer and is NOT Keith Richards is never drunk/high/stoned/whatever on stage. Ever. If they would, they wouldn't have lasted.
Yeah, I like this version more, too. It's alot more mournful.. given the theme of the song: Suicide. I'm sure goofball fans jump & scream w/ joy during the ESB version..
The original version was kind of a mess. Manfred Mann cleaned it up and made it a smart song....but this version...this is how it should have been sung from the get go.
@CPSJSMSUUMUGA you'll notice I gave him a *big fucking thumbs up* for his writing. Amazing writer, for sure. And "Fire" is one of my favorite songs ever. This one and Blinded will always be his- It's his heart and soul poured into the lyrics, after all, but I far prefer MM's interpretations of both.
this isnt even the same song as the hammersmith 75. the one sung in that show was by a young man who gave it all away that night. not by some old used up old man that sings like bob dylan. and thast the truth, not my opinion.
Quixoic I agree. I want to like Springsteen's version better of those songs, but they come off as a rambling mess. It's not like Springsteen's hasn't written tight, punchy pop songs. I wish these songs were tightened up and recorded in born in the USA style.
Words cannot express how wonderful this man's words are.
Just one of my favorites by this local musical genious coming in at 5'10 and being all that and so much more. ❤ the hardest working man in the country....bar none....the boss!
i am in love with this version.
The master at work...
This is one of the best videos of Bruce!. Awesome.

Damn it, Bruce! That is he best fucking Bob Dylan impression I EVER heard!
This is heartbreaking
amazing, this is first time I've heard this song, and I love it already .
Love him forever!Thank you Bruce!!!!!!The Boss!
YOU ARE THE GREATEST- IT s for YOUUUUUUU!!!!!
Grazie Bruce!!! Con la tua musica e le tue canzoni!!! Dai un senso alla mia vita!!!😇🤩😍😍😍😘😘🎶💫🎸🌟🌲⛄
Small steps, doing the best one can. Balancing love with sanity. Never a balanced equation

impresive...
Love this version
A letra é extraordinária e assim ao piano é-o ainda mais!
amazing if you really listen ...

Bruce is known to have a few belts from time to time.I was there the night the bouncers at the Pony flagged him. Ain't no crime...we all been there.
I like it because it reminds me of something I never will have.
Our Boss.
WOW...this is amazing.wow
Ci Sono canzoni che non serve commentarle!!! Basta ascoltare!!!! 😌😳😘😍🎸💟💟💔💘👏💯💋

Without Bruce Springsteen, Mannfred Mann doesn't exist ever. End of discussion.
Bruchee, you're brilliant!. Bravo por this video: it's one of the best. Thanks. In a few days we'll see him, here, in Spain. Bruce forever.
for the 12 that put a thumb down..you people have no fucking clue what music is about..cause this is so amazing...
great vidieo and sounds like this show is good too
@jowbowla Hammersmith has been taken down from youtube, but spring for the 99 cents and download it from iTunes. Not a bad price for a priceless piece of music.
great version
This version is far superior to the original IMO.
nunca he estado ta cerca de ti como ahora...
yes, about suicide - a cult hit amongst early springsteen fans...he played it the first time i ever saw him in person in 1978 - blew me away...so much sadder than the album version
@Godofwrath, 3 of Manfred Mann's Earth Band's very limited mainstream hits were Springsteen covers, just tossing that out there...
@addapost I'm with you.
i agree i think the hammersmith version is unbelievable. on another level, this is great as well, however to me nothing can hold a candle to the hammersmith version
🎹🎹🎹🎹❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
El artista imprudente...
hes the boss
It always hurts a little.....still.
@Quixoic How do you think they'd have done with For You, and all the other Springsteen covers they built their career on, if Bruce hadn't written them?
temazo baby!
well said, sir!
Brilliant song written by a 22 year old :)
I think u've never seen an old Joe Cocker Live Concert... he drank a whole bottle of whiskey on stage XD in more than just one concert
who cares if he's been drunk in the studio while recording? The guy drinks. I've done shots of Petron Tequila with him at the Pony, seen him after a night out at the Windmill in Long Branch, seen him have a few beers and get up to jam with Bobby Bandiera at the old Cheers in LB. his voice changed so much since he put out this song
vine por ti
I came for you
vine por ti
I came for you
vine por ti
I came for you
vine por ti
I came for you
Tarjetas de princesa que me manda con sus saludos
Princess cards she sends me with her regards
Oh, los ojos del bar brillan vacantes
Oh, bar-room eyes shine vacancy
Para verla tienes que mirar duro
To see her you gotta look hard
Herido profundamente en la batalla
Wounded deep in battle
Estoy lleno como un soldado impávido
I stand stuffed like some soldier undaunted
Para su sonrisa de Cheshire, estaré en el archivo
To her cheshire smile I'll stand on file
Ella es todo lo que siempre quise
She's all I ever wanted
Dejas que tus paredes azules se interpongan en el camino de estos hechos, cariño
You let your blue walls stand in the way of these facts, honey
Quítate a tus empacadores de alfombras de mi espalda
Get your carpet baggers off my back
Chica dame tiempo para cubrir mis huellas
Girl give me time to cover my tracks
Dijiste: "Aquí está tu espejo y tu bola y jotas"
You said, "Here's your mirror and your ball and jacks"
Pero no son por lo que vine
But they're not what I came for
Oh, vine por mucho más
Oh I came for so much more
Y lo sé, tú también lo sabes
And I know, you know that too
Y lo sé, sabes que eso es verdad
And I know, you know that's true
vine por ti
I came for you
vine por ti
I came for you
vine por ti
I came for you
Para ti
For you
vine por ti
I came for you
vine por ti
I came for you
vine por ti
I came for you
Para ti
For you
vine por ti
I came for you
@phortion i emailed you a link to it.
Here's how it goes. A rock'n'roller who's had a 30+ year carreer is NOT drunk/high/stoned/whatever on stage. Ever. If they would, they wouldn't have lasted.
Hör dich mal die Hammersmith Odeon Version an, nur geil!
I hate myself for not being there
ur right, he still does give it all away, but its not even close to being nearly enough, or as much as it used to be. and im sry, my comment on bruce there was a little harsh, musta been in a bad mood that day. i got mad props for bruce, but people tell me hes better now than he was, and thats just not the case. and thats not my opinion, that is a fact. e street band is better tho :)

Don't offend one legend by a ridiculous reference to another ... ;-)
Great song. I also like Manfred Mann's version.

Hey, no sweat. I've done it, too. Sadly, anonymity can bring out the worst in all of us.
@haitianjack5 Anybody know where to find the Hammersmith version on youtube?
Yeah, I like this version more, too. It's alot more mournful.. given the theme of the song: Suicide. I'm sure goofball fans jump & scream w/ joy during the ESB version..
obwohl mir manfred manns version gut gefällt,
das hier ist schon imposant vom chef.
@IZSBHR right
This is NOT about suicide...
is the song about a suicid?
I'm very sorry for whatever has happened that has made you so angry. Life isn't fair, is it?
any way I can find the audio file for this?
Where can I download this version?
Manfred Mann's version is good too.
I do like them both though.
@IZSBHR
Sorry fella but your wrong.
Look up Bruce talking about Danny and a certain smoking habit he had.
DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE VAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA DE JA MENA
The original version was kind of a mess. Manfred Mann cleaned it up and made it a smart song....but this version...this is how it should have been sung from the get go.
Holy shit, I just realized Manfred Mann covered a third of Springsteen's debut album O.o
The song is about a girl who commits suicide isn't it?
I gotta go with Manfred Mann's version on this one. Bruce's is too slow, but I still like it.
The Boss is the Boss. Nevertheless I like the Manfred Mann version more.
this isnt even the same song as the hammersmith 75. the one sung in that show was by a young man who gave it all away that night. not by some old used up old man that sings like bob dylan. and thast the truth, not my opinion.
Chris Thompson do this soooo muvhe better .. ty to bruce fore the song tho.. he didnt have to sing it do,, crap..
Springsteen is an amazing song writer but I think Manfred Mann did it better.
Quixoic silliness
Quixoic I agree. I want to like Springsteen's version better of those songs, but they come off as a rambling mess. It's not like Springsteen's hasn't written tight, punchy pop songs. I wish these songs were tightened up and recorded in born in the USA style.
...is he drunk...???
