- To mark the passing of this grim milestone, the tenor bell, (32cwt 1 qtr, 11 lbs/1.643 tonnes), was rung half muffled for ten minutes at 8pm, on Tuesday, 26th January 2021.
I’m a bellringer and i work for the NHS in nursing. The sound of this bell it’s open side, the reason for it ringing, plus haunting sound of the muffle moved me tears.

Why the bell only rings on one side.
@@kirchenglockentv it rings both side, but on one side of the clapper is a leather muffle, designed to give a 'loud' stroke and an echo on the other.
Are you going to toll the tenor on the 23rd march for the minute silence at 12:01? (minute silence starts at 12:00)
Yeah, will be, a few other local towers are doing do too, including Belton.
Is the muffle on wrongly, or is the backstroke muffled on purpose?

I think the muffle is on the wrong side if I’m correct
Ringing the bell on my own and out of personal choice of wanting to see the muffle it was placed this way around on this occasion, but normally it would be the other side, yes.
@@DavidBraunton I suspected that was why it was where it was. Really love the sound of the muffled bell. I do wonder what a fully muffled bell would sound like - suspect we won't hear that until the death of the Sovereign.

Whilst under Covid restrictions, It's just one person ringing, if you look at some of my other videos you can see full circle ringing.

the sight of a vigorously swinging church bell isn't definitely the right place for a person having both these phobias.
