  • Earth 2140 RTS Game Review. In this video I'll be looking at the lesser known CnC clone Earth 2140. A futuristic RTS game from 1997 and a personal nostalgia trip for myself. I saw this game in the Steam Store and could remember playing it for hours back in the day. Does it still hold up? Well I did develop some flaws over time. Check the video if you want to know more.

    Guys the GOG version in the extra section is working just like the original, good working A.I and no low frame rate.
    I played this version so much, I have no problems at all, only at start-up you need to press the Y key a couple of times, that's it, please give it a change.
    This was my first pc game and 20 years later it is still my favorite game, I play the campaign almost every year, I even 3D printed some units.
    Great to see this review, but the ending is not right, I can play the gog version with enhanced AI just fine, please keep this game alive and try the enhanced AI version in the extras of the gog site.
    Thank you for making this video.

    I think that the original DOS version has better AI. In DOS version computer trains units and makes a buidings more actively. I remember the situation, when I destroyed 2 enemy powerplants, but computer rebuild them on different location, in short time. This new version with 2 expansions, which is running under Windows has definitely some problem with AI; also crashing sometimes. :( It is little bit sad; But I have beautiful memories on this game. I completely enjoy It, and another games from these years like Trasport Tycoon Deluxe, Starcraft, LBA 2, Dungeon Keeper..... It is strong nostalgic for me.

    Man i am playing the GOG dos version with enhanced a.i. and beaten both main campaings and am now at mission pack 1 with ucs somewhere desert storm mission 5.I played all missions on normal.
    I know what you mean the game gets annoying with it's startup screen where you have to press Y sometimes i just didn't play the game sometimes because of it, but that seizure screen dissapeared right away when i played it. And the laggy game wasn't too much on the dos for me so i keept playing since it's a really fun game to me though sometimes i did use control f11 or control f12, but then the music doesn't play clean enough, also fire makes the game lag also much if you use UCS many units that throw canisters or something with fire on impact. The enemies in this game is pretty hardcore, good thing there exists the R button for reinforcements. I needed R at the start of a level many times to even beat the level. And about the invisible sea units, they don't hide much in the dos version they just attack you as much as they can i believe, so not a big problem and i believe on land you can just activate the general and they will circle around the invisible unit when searching for them. Last mission in ED main campaing was rather annoying with no way to reach the enemy base properly then helicopters or water units. Sure i had to nuke them a few times to get to them
    Earth 2150 while i did play a little with ED i still didn't feel the fun i had at earth 2140, even mission packs are kinda fun in that game. Currently earth 2140 is on hold and earth 2150 kinda also on hold. Maybe i just haven't played earth 2150 enough to feel fun.
    Also in earth 2140 i usually used a strategy to destroy their powerplants so it would slow them down and give me a chance to defeat enemies. One stage was really hard since i had to attack resources at the beginning with UCS because otherwise i couldn't beat em. Also there exists another bug in UCS first mission pack, don't know why but the first upper mission somehow i lost control and couldn't chose to build buildings or units for some reason, only way to fix this was to pause the game and unpause and it was fixed, some selections weren't working correctly there.

    • @BeyondDM
      @BeyondDM  Před 5 lety

      thanks for the added info. I just couldn't stand the lag enough myself to push though it on the dos version. If I ever build a retro PC and have the original disks (they're somewhere in the attic of parents house) It'll be the first game I install and play again but with the digital releases I feel kinda screwed

    • @fonzersbox1
      @fonzersbox1 Před 5 lety

      @@BeyondDM okay, i understand the lag is something that can be too much, even though there are speed options in the game menu also and not just changing the cycles in dosbox, at least i played it on win xp enough. I had to usually use UCS assault tigers which only shoot rockets and new technologies than those fire canister units. But you should know that the game usually requires you to destroy all buildings and units like a true wipeout rts, rarely are there missions where you also have to capture an enemy construction center or what they are called and then you have to protect them or you have to capture something else to win. But one problem with this game is also that the enemy gets a free army many times so R or reinforcements and wiping out their powerplants or resources or main building is sometimes required or it becomes impossible to win. And the enemy tactics to simply bring fly transport with units to take over your buildings and self destruct them also happens many times. For this you just need to know which units to place close to buildings to protect them. Like the ucs spider that shoots plasma bolts same with ED i believe also there exists a tank like that. And yes UCS is technologicaly advanced this is why invisibility will become very needed in game with them sometimes that is the only thing that saves you from defeat to build a shadow tank as fast as possible. ED is more army power, i just preffered using those long ranged heavy rocket tanks and also ED has more hitpoints for a smaller price on most tanks while UCS doesn't have that many hitpoints and could be even expensiver. Also ED helicopters which shoot rockets, very usefull to tacticly destroy some powerplants.
      And then there are even trigger places which i kinda see in mission packs, you attack a certain area and the enemy sends their army outside of the map into the map with a huge army that can get dangerous, don't know anymore if this is the same for main campaing. Mission packs really don't offer any videos except the intro of the mission pack, while main campaing has some short videos when you enter a new area or beat the game even with text.
      Mission packs only offer a short briefing of what you need to do and play if people didn't have enough with main campaing, one reason to play it is you get to use more nukes with ED and ion cannon or what it was with UCS while the main game only had it in the last stage i believe. Gets quite challenging, but so is the main game. Anyway i still enjoyed this game very much even though it was one of the most challenging RTS i ever played.

    I really didn't like Total Annihilation much played to mission 17 with some faction and stopped.
    Yesterday i wondered if i should try earth 2140 dos version again from where i left off.
    And it works on win10 without lag i think. Probably because this laptop hp probook 4540s is somehow compatible with the dosbox release of gog.
    Guess i will play the UCS mission pack 1 level 5 sweden and then playing Greenhorn and will be done with the mission pack 1 for UCS only.
    Also i did play more of earth 2150. It's a very good game only haven't beaten lost souls.

      Problem with the new AI (steam classic version as well, it's based on the re-release) it doesn't build any buildings or units outside the ones it starts out with. Gog has the original good AI but it's almost unplayable. Wish we had the sourcefiles or an AI mod or something (and multiplayer :p), it would help the game a lot. I'm now playing earth 2150 trilogy and it has a lot of technical difficulties of it's own..

      @@BeyondDM So Ive played a bit more and I found where is the problem - my GOG version is broken as well! :(( I noticed in the last mission of the first continent (for the ED) where you must invade the island. There I noticed there is no harvester to collect the resources so they are not building any new units :/ I don't know why the gog version is broken for me as well just like the Steam one. Anyway I still can refund the Steam ver. so Im gonna do that since there is no point having two (broken) copies :( Im thinking Im gonna buy Earth 2160 for the money instead. Btw I never played E2150 for one simple reason - no infantry. I can't play strategy games without that, but thats just me. Even more so when I love infantry in this game, mainly UCS because they look like Terminators :)

      @@CliffuckingBooth also, never played earth 2160, but I have it in my steam. I'm considering making a review of earth 2150 (not sure because it has a lot of technical difficulties - if you run it in 16/9 resolution it crashes when you go to the production screen, it runs standard at locked 20 fps etc..) and after that I'll take a look at earth 2160 but I heard it wasn't that well received when it released, anyway guess I'll see what it's about :)

    • @CliffuckingBooth
      @CliffuckingBooth Před 4 lety

      @@BeyondDMOh I see, thanks for the info about gog version. About Earth 2160 I believe people didn't like the game mechanics change (in E2160 you don't choose faction but you gradually play for each faction just like in StarCraft for example. Thats the only thing i didn't like actually but you can play skirmish for each right away). Also the game was pretty hard and had a longer learning curve. But I always loved it. If you look on the wiki it had around 7-8/10 which is pretty great score to me. They also returned the infantry units including my favourite Silver models :) I just hope that the Steam version will be working at least this time :/
