The primary evidence that it was Sonic, before the ending reveal was
1. Sonic, when going to flush the leaves, just stood there. He could have been making sure no one was there, but he could have gone closer while keeping watch.
2. Even after Ugandan Knuckles tells Sonic and Knuckles to skip, Sonic gives no justification for voting off Mario. Knuckles votes because of democracy, but Sonic says nothing.
3. If there was anyone Tails would be most familiar with, aside from those he pointed out, it would have been Sonic.
I could be missing some other evidence, but there was enough to see this coming.
