knxwledge is the biggest mystery to me when it comes to beats. Especially the older tapes have some really unique rhythms and some sample work that I can't make sense of at all.

His drum selection and groove is on point. But honestly from what I've analyzed he is such really good at picking samples, so he is like Madlib, always listening to samples, and trying to find a special loop, after that it is simple work honestly

@@Narokx I watched your tutorial/thoughts on Nujabes just now too and yeah, I agree a lot with your take there. Trying to recreate these beats sometimes just isn't fair because it's a totally different perspective. Still though, some of his stuff just makes no sense. It seems really simple, but then you take a dig at it and he's made these intricate changes in arrangement and timing that I just don't understand at all. Noflwrs is a great example for me. It seems like a simple and straight-forward loop, until you try to get the same result that he got, and it just won't work.
It's definitely better to look at it from the perspective of experimenting though, like they did, and not analytically trying to recreate someone's experiment. But it's interesting either way, and really shows how good these guys are at what they do. You can have all the ingredients they used to make it, but you'll still have a really hard time getting the same result.

@@andyby I've had the exact same experience with knxwledge. It feels like everything he does doesn't work on paper, but for some reason if he does it, it sounds fuckin cool. The way he uses compression and delay/reverb around the cuts or stops in his older beats (if you get what I mean) really scratch an itch, as someone who tries to make similar stuff. When I first found him, I felt inspired because it felt so simple upon first listen. Then I would try and make something using similar techniques and ideas, and it just wouldn't work. But yeah you're definitely right about having to experiment yourself rather than trying to recreate someone else's experiment. Although I guess it can be nice to be humbled a bit and be reminded that there is a LOT more to learn. And knxwledge sure is good at reminding me...
