      Depending on the Filter characteristics and subwoofer it can be useful to flatten the response. For example you make a compromise in enclosure building that it maybe is strong below 30hz and works okay up to 100hz but there is a dip in between yet the enclosure might be a lot smaller made like this depending on many factors and if that filter boosts this area and the sub can handle the power it is very very useful to make the Response flat. Same goes for any other filter. If the speaker can handle a boost there is no problem using it.

    You seriously just helped me understand crossovers for the first time after 3 years of messing with my equalizer in my kenwood. I can not believe I just now understood the fact that the drop off being a sudden drop off for me is better than a slow drop off. Thank you so much seriously.

    Everyone here is asking how to tune their graphic EQ's. Good question! Since I have many years experience tuning medium and larger scale PA systems professionally, I thought I'd offer some friendly help:
    You can do this! It's all about using your ears. A very simple way to start is to set your graphic flat and put on your favorite music, semi-loud. Turn up each freq, one by one, and listen to the difference it makes. If that freq hurts your ears or distorts the speakers, turn it down until it doesn't. If you like a freq and want to hear it more, turn it up a bit. Repeat across the band. It should sort of look like waves, but probably nothing too extreme plus or minus. And despite what you've seen others do, a smiley face is probably NOT going to sound best. Basically, you should be able to get it very loud, without distortion, AND without hurting your ears. It should also sound balanced across the freq spectrum (low to high). Make sure you can hear the bass, vocals (mids), and highs.... and all of the instruments in the song. Only after all of that is done, if you really want more bass.... turn up the bass.
    There are more professional tools and methods out there for sure, but this is the basic method every pro audio engineer refers to in a pinch. You might find you enjoy it, and you will be training your ears at the same time. Happy tuning!

      Also, if you still want more bass after all of that, use subtractive eq. Subtractive eq can come in handy if for all frequencies but in our case, it usually means “adding” even more bass. We do this by leaving the bass levels the same (after eq’ing everything) and turn down all of the other frequencies in unison. This creates more perceptive bass in relation to the other frequencies. It should add some volume headroom as well.

      Thanks for the great tip. I am struggling with the Sound Effect part 1:05. I have played with it so much I can't figure out the best setting anymore. Should I turn them all off and just try your equalizer adjustment method?

    • @RetroElectroville
      @RetroElectroville Před 2 lety +1

      @@snowwalker9999 I tried all of the 'sound effect' settings offered on the unit for kicks. In the end, I left them all off and just set the graphic EQ. They were fun to play with, but were more ear candy than useful. Although it is impressive technology, they tend to create an unnatural sound using complex algorithms and digital filters. Note that no professional recording studio is going to use these types of artificial processing, so why should we? I say stick with the graphic, you'll have more fun tuning, and get better results across all recordings. Cheers

    However, like the name a

    This was helpful in explaining the features of the radio. I have a question though. Can you help me understand how bass and treble relate to the EQ at the different frequencies? Generally, on a stock radio I do 10/10 bass and 8/10 on treble. I'm trying to figure out how to set the EQ to where I can achieve more boom bass from the speakers AND a clear volume for vocals. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @Megawatt
      @Megawatt Před 6 lety +4

      Jonathan Gamber get better speakers. Cranking up the EQ is just going to cause distortion at high volume levels. But to answer your question, bass and treble settings are exactly the same as the EQ in this video, except you can only adjust 2 frequencies instead of 13. Typically bass is centred at 100Hz and treble is 1000Hz.

    So loudness = dynamic range reduction aka make all instruments in the song the same volume. Got it.
    Space enhancer = probably uses some combination of time delay to create the illusion of larger space similar to 'Spatial' in Alpine head units Got it.
    Supreme/Realizer/Drive EQ = Now this is where i get confused, i know Alpine have a MX (media xpander) mode, which basically re-encodes lossy formats such as MP3's/AAC's from USB or your phone on the fly to make the song come alive and sound as they should, it has three modes on the Alpine, each one dramatically makes things louder and boosts the output voltage on the RCA, and will clip the signal to your amps unless you turn the gain down. The Kendwood Realizer mode which also has three modes makes me think this is the same thing as MX on the alpines. Got it.
    However i'm not sure what supreme and drive EQ is for then? seems like they are kinda doing the same thing????
    I do like how you can set tweeter level on the front, this is such a well thought out feature.
    .

    Secondly i had the Pioneer Premier Deh-860mp and it was the first color screen cd/mp3 player it was amazing it had a setting on the outside for output it had an active settings so your output went from front rear sub to high mid low i feel very ahead of its time also it had 13 band eq and digital time alignment and self eq as well you took your vehicle to a quite location and plug in the provided microphone and it would exactly time alignment exactly to where your head sat i would always turn my subwoofers off as that didn't work it would just clip the microphone but why dont they use this technology now with better microphones instead they got these dsp which are amazing but not only do you have to have a great understanding of how it works and how each car is completely different when it comes to tuning these and as well you need nice microphones or at least one to help it spund good which most dont have even the better locations around the country do not have the things you do nor do they have enough knowledge like you guys do they unfortunately are in it o ly to get momey in there pocket not necessarily to make there customers walk away like wow those guys know an extreamly high amount of knowledge compared to the other shop i went to i wish more shops where like you but i truely would like a teply on why not use the technology

      @RetroElectroville Před 4 lety +3

      There is no best setting, unfortunately. And every car/system is different. Ultimately it is all up to what sounds good to your ears. I work in pro audio and tune multi thousand watt PA systems with 31 band graphic EQ's on top of parametric among other things. In the end it is just more detailed work with very expensive tools.
      You can do this! A very simple way to start yourself is to set your graphic flat, put on your favorite music semi-loud, turn up each freq one by one and listen to the difference it makes, if that freq hurts your ears or distorts the speakers, turn it down until it stops. If you feel like a freq and want to hear more, turn it up a bit. Repeat across the band. It should sort of look like waves, nothing too extreme. Basically, you should be able to get it very loud without distortion, AND without hurting your ears. Happy tuning!

I thought I was utilizing only my amp settings, but watching this video made me wonder if I might not be getting what I think; especially if I select the car type, speaker position and size, etc. I assume from that information, Kenwood is choosing crossover parameters, gain, etc vs me explicitly setting the crossover values using the X'OVER button? Can you tell me which stereo will gives you best musical experience Alpine or Kenwood. Since the tuning level of kenwood matches the alpine. Please suggest me a best stereo which give us more audio clarity and good experience.

    Thanks for the great vids. On my DDX9903s, four of the options are not lit for me to select; speaker/x'over, equalizer, position/dta and sound effect. Things I've tried; putting it in park, turning iPhone bluetooth off, and tried playing a CD just to make sure it's not on standby.

      You are the maaaaaaaaan!!!!!!! Like I said, the problem seemed worse right after initializing, but I opened up Audio settings today and it's all there! I guess it just needed a full reboot by turning the vehicle off and then on. Not only that, but I didn't have to do the update over again, it kept all the update fixes / perks.

      Steven Ross well that is a great interface. At this point you have 2 choices. 1 live with it or 2 replace the factory amp with something better. Unfortunately interfacing with factory is not always perfect.

      Five Star Car Stereo I agree with you I think I will replace it with the Kenwood eXcelon XR600-6DSP when it comes out in a couple of weeks that's the was to go it think unless you have a better idea.

    • @FiveStarCarStereoInc
      @FiveStarCarStereoInc  Před 7 lety +1

      Steven Ross that amp would be over kill if you are running a 693. The radio already has all DSP features built in. I would just get the XR900-5 and be done.

      Yes leave them because the stereo don’t filter all of them also when you turn on the car the amp can clip and damage your tweeters so it’s extra protection

    How do I set the eq to a level where I increase the vocals and lower the bass

    • @ryanwilson5936
      @ryanwilson5936 Před rokem

      I’ve found lowering the 160 and 100 frequencies helped a lot. Keeping the 62.5 up keeps the “thud” of the bass drum and reducing 100 and 160 really tamed the extra boominess. Once your bass is tamed, you should be able to just turn up the volume to hear vocals clearer. If not, start adjusting other frequencies (630-6.3k) one at a time until you hear a difference. 10k and 16k is where a lot of that high-end “sparkle” lives. Adjusting those frequencies can make a big overall difference in sound too. Adjust those to your liking one-by-one until it sounds how you want it. There’s no other way to learn how to EQ but once you know how, you’ll never forget and you’ll be adjusting all of your friends car radios too.

    I had a ddx9907xr kenwood installed in my c6 corvette which had bose premium navigation system. When I had the factory radio installed i had my treb at 5 mid a 3 and bass at 3 from a 0-5 setting on each. I don't know what to set this radio at to have it sound good? Still has factory bose speakers and tweets in it. I don't know the frequency they are to set a cross over or even where I should put the equ to sound as I had it to the factory radio. Get really distorted above volume 28. Could you help me where to set the eq?

Everything is hooked up but those. I even have the speaker cable ran from their amp. Something about removing a bunch of door panels makes the rest of life a much higher priority. And, I live in Michigan and winter is coming… It may become a 2023 spring project.

    Idk if you still answer questions here but I have one. I have an 06 pathfinder with the Bose system. Kenwood ddx9703s.
    Since it used factory amplifier and speakers I have it hooked up via RCAs.
    The harness only provided me 4 RCAs which I hooked up to front and rear.
    Included in the rear channels is the rear speakers and the factory subwoofer
    It's a long shot but is there anyway to adjust the sub settings?
    Also a 2nd question. I have a problem with blueooth calling/microphone.
    People I talk to complain they cant hear me or can barely understand me because the sound quality is so poor.
    I tried adjusting noise cancellation and those microphone settings with no help
    Is it a bad mic? Or Is there anything else I can adjust on the unit?
    I hate to have to take it all apart to replace a faulty mic if it turns out to be simple setting fix.
    Hope u get this. Thanks so much in advance
