  • Here we're showing how to prune okra while picking our okra plants. This pruning technique is desired for easy access and visibility along with increased production.
    Okra is an easy vegetable to grow We’re growing this Long horn okra or cow horn okra, an heirloom variety. These pods stay tender at long lengths and grow really fast. To make sure you don’t get any hard ones, you want to pick your okree every 2-3 days.
    Usually the ends are cut off in the field when we pick. We bring them in, clean them up, slice them to eat fresh and store some for another time.
    Okra is a highly sought after vegetable here in the south especially during the summer time. We want it fresh, we want it tender and lots of it! It’s prepared in any number of ways. But here, we like it fried, in gumbo, and smothered with shrimp, sausage, and tomatoes over rice. Talk about good!

    I’m so happy to learn you can prune the plant and it’ll continue to produce. Mine are like 10 feet tall, and I’m struggling to reach. I’m trying to figure out the best way to prune them shorter, to a more manageable height for harvesting, while continuing to harvest!

    I grow my garden in 5-15 gal containers and I love Baby Bubba Okra because it is self pollinating and grows in a bush to about 3-4ft not 15ft tall. Very tasty and productive too~!

    Interesting. I'd never pruned okra this hard before. Usually just the yellowing branches.
    But good to know I can shape them up to make more handsome plants!

    I’m new to growing okra this year. I’m growing the green Clemson spineless variety. I learned to harvest while they’re small. The bigger they get the woodier they are.

    You guys have an awesome garden!! My papaw had huge gardens with rows & rows of okra like this. Us kids would have to get out there after school & pick okra almost everyday 😂 my new favorite variety of okra is Heavy Hitter okra from Baker Creek. It produced a ton of okra this year & I only had 7 plants!

    • @LouisianaGardener
      @LouisianaGardener  Před 2 lety +1

      Ok. I’m gonna see what heavy hitter is talking about. I started young as well…out there bright and early with my folks too. Thanks for sharing and for the okra tip. Have a good one.

    It’s beautiful 😍how do you plant the okra? What kind of dirt and fertilizer and seed to you use? When do I know when to water the okra?

    • @LouisianaGardener
      @LouisianaGardener  Před 2 lety

      I planted some indoors as transplants and it’s a good thing because we had a lot of rain this year. I used store bought soil for the seeds. I used Triple 13 fertilizer in the field.
