The best thing that will almost certainly come from this is Nikon cameras being able to record compressed RAW video.

I thought about picking up a Red, but just can't bring myself to do it. The lack of support is key. The big holy shit concern for me is the media. Those Red mags are off-the-shelf hard drives that Red has locked into their camera via software. If Red would unlock the media drives the camera can use via a firmware update, I would take a chance on a secondhand Red. In 5-10 years though, I think most of these cameras will be paperweights.

For me the biggest question is if Nikon continue to block other companies from using compressed RAW recording in camera. RED is blocking the development of high quality video recording for a lot of years and we will see now if Nikon will change this and license the patent or continue to block the development until it runs out in a couple of years.

This is a great point. Well see what route Nikon chooses but something tells me they wont be giving this technology away.

If I were Nikon I would keep blocking and push Z mount video bodies HARD.

@@budthecyborg4575 This might be something a US-company (like RED) would do but I think Japan is different. My impression is, that the companies in Japan are competing hard but they also stick together to keep everybody else out of the market.
If Nikon would try to gain a leading position by being the only company that is allowed to do efficient internal RAW-recording they would force the others to work even closer with Blackmagic and Apple to improve RAW recording over HDMI. BRAW and ProRes-RAW would gain importance.
I think it is much better for Nikon to put it into the patent pool and establish REDcode as the main RAW-format. Such a format isn't protected by patents that run out after 20 years, it is copyrighted for a much longer time. I wouldn't be surprised if Nikon has already spoken to the other companies early in the Game and got support to buy RED in exchange with licensing deals and everybody is already working hard on the implementation of RAW in camera.
Of course, we don't know and they are not gonna tell us.
I'm sure we will see more if Sony shows the A7S4, Canon the R1 and Panasonic the S1H-II. My bet is, they have RAW internal. May be, this is the reason they are all kind of delayed.

Just bought a RED Komodo, and just starting to have a feeling that i should get rid of it.

Sadly in the UK general market options are pretty dry for decent priced Red cameras. I do expect the people who want the old DSMC would probably go to Black Magic (for the compressed raw). I think it will be hard to find another camera brand that will produce as much bit depth and colour re-production in the price range again or for a while. I am confident Nikon will start releasing their cameras with higher bit depth before compressed, but this is due to my personal price for colour perspective.

The single biggest reason I never purchased a RED was the lack of support form RED. As soon as a new model is out they effectively stop support on their older products.

Great video! I have an old Scarlet-X I'm holding on to as well. I have other cameras but I still love it, but my SDI and headphone ports are busted. Where can I get it serviced? You mentioned some places.

This guy repairs them on CZcams and will repair anyone RED camera. Here is his FB page facebook.com/CGPENT of course you'll want to chat and build a relationship before sending or agreeing to anything but this is who i would probably ask. The other companies i found in LA are very expensive but i can look back and find them again im sure.

I did own an old red for a while too an MX sensor version. In the end the sheer size and weight became an issue with small crew jobs, it was slow to work with, footage transfer with old USB was slow etc etc. And that older sensor started to shift skin tone quite a lot as you moved away from native ISO. It also crashed sometimes, and just chewed through giant batteries in no time at all.
The Redraw codec is the real draw I think. One would hope Nikon license that out to others. But perhaps we'll only see the codec in Nikons. Either way I'm sure Redcode will be seen in Nikon cameras.
In terms of the branding, the Red "tribal bro" thing I think actually limits their audience rather than extends it. All the other brands are totally neutral, Red does have this sort of "wraparound shades, high five shouting YEAH" image to it and that is an acquired taste rather than a neutral brand 😂... it's probably a matter of personal taste though, but it's not seen a tool only, but a lifestyle brand.

    • @epochfilmandphoto
      @epochfilmandphoto  Před 3 měsíci +1

I cant argue with any of that. The beauty for me is when you do get the camera running with the right support system and fully juiced battery the image is beautiful. Getting there and maintaining that is an issue. I dont use my RED for weddings, corporate vids etc. But for certain projects it still has my heart.

@@epochfilmandphoto Yeah as soon as you deviate from he crew setting it was designed for, it's harder to handle. When it's in the zone though, it looks amazing!

Yea your right. But people collect 35 and 16 mm film cameras from the 70s so there will be a place.

    •  Před 3 měsíci

I reckon the last Red models will be lower in price but still desirable for a quite a long time. I would think Nikon and Red tech will draw way closer together, so Red will become a sort of Nikon "cinema brand" like Canon's C line or Sony and their CineAlta.
I think it's quite exciting, a camera that was a best of Red and a Nikon Z8 would be exceptional if done right.
