Colombia Is Rising Up

  • Today marks one month of large-scale protests across Colombia, an uprising without a clear precedent in the South American country’s history. It started with a national strike in April protesting a tax reform bill, but it soon became an entrenched mass movement against poverty, inequality, and state violence, fueled by poor urban youths who do battle directly with the police. According to human rights groups, more than 40 people have been killed by security forces, and the upheaval has turned into a genuine crisis of legitimacy for a historically unpopular government. VICE News spent time on the front lines of the unrest.

@@adventuressdcafansub7249 Well the Tatmadaw (Burmese armed forces) has responded with brutal crackdowns and citizens are now taking up arms in Shan State, Kayah, Mobye, Mindat, and other places. The NUG (Burmese government in exile) has created the PDF (People Defense Force), a rival militia to counter the Tatmadaw. As of now at least 850+ people are dead and thousands are arbitrarily arrested. Bomb attacks have also increased since the coup but it is unclear whether the bombs are created and placed by the Tatmadaw or by the resistance.

I spent a year living in Bogotá, and I was there in 2019 when the latest string of protests began. Living in Bogotá, and visiting some cities and villages outside, I saw everywhere how resourceful, strong, and compassionate the people of Colombia are.
I wondered how a country with such a hardworking, smart population, huge natural resources, and an amazing strategic position on two oceans, and the only land border between North America and South America could be so underdeveloped. It didn't take long to become clear that there's a simple answer. Colombia has never had good government. Since independence, it's remained fully under control by the Spanish elite and their families, disguised as a multiparty system, but the only ones who win elections and stay alive are the right and far right parties.
Don't give up the fight, Colombianos. Your people, your country have nowhere to go but up. Just stay strong, and make sure that next year, a good candidate wins the presidency. Petro is running again, I think. He would be a good start. Primera Linea, you might have to be his protection. You know what happened the last time a left-wing president was elected.

And what we wanted has yet to be achieved, all we got so far was getting two shitty reforms canceled out that would have made things much worse for everyone in the country that isnt in a high income class family, what we want is better economical support, more security for the social leaders and everyone else and more opportunities for studies and work and what has the government done? either they try to "fix" with bandaid solutions, they hire someone they own a favor to so money ends up lost and the worst of all they do effectively nothing.

The People of Colombia are literally rising up against a government installed by the US of A, the same sort of government the US has been attempting to install in countries like Bolivia and Venezuela. Your 'opportunity' is based on the US multinational corporations deeply exploiting the natural resources, industry and labor of countries just like Colombia and accumulating an immense wealth at the direct expense of the greater portion of the world. The People of Colombia are literally rising up against a government installed by the US. The EU does the same thing too, by the way. If you actually care, you should oppose US and EU Imperialism. You should also recognize why the US is friends with insane countries like Saudi Arabia and Israel, and yet the US always relies on heavy propaganda to demonize and impose embargoes against any country trying to become economically independent, in order to prepare to send people like you in to "occupy" the country.
