    I’m from the Northeast and as a child I would go explore the wall and the chain of forts, with my family, frequently between late spring and early autumn. When I moved away to London, anytime I saw pictures or film of Hadrian’s Wall it made me feel very homesick. Sometimes it takes being away from something to realise how much you miss it. I live back home now and I get myself out there in the summers as much as I can. It’s a very special place to me.

    where did they get the stones from? to build the wall,

    • @jonimrye5722
      @jonimrye5722  Před rokem +1

      Hi Nicholas thanks for your question. The wall was built all along the 83miles simultaneously by different gangs of workers. Not all the wall was built with stone initially, so some bits were built in stone taken from local quarries close to where they were building. Large parts of it though there was no stone available nearby so it was built in turf with a wooden palisade or fence on top and then replaced with stone later when the road was added and stone could be transported in. Hope this answers your question. Best wishes Jon

    There is no way that ALL Roman troops left Britain by 410 AD, or at any date. The garrison of Hadrian's Wall was by Auxiliary & Federate soldiers, not by 'the Legions'. Such limitani, static garrison troops would have been of little use in the mobile wars on the continent which concerned the Romans at the start of the 5th century, nor would it have been likely that such men, for centuries now embedded into local society, could have been persuaded to leave their home area, never mind the island. The troops that did leave went with the usurper Constantine 3rd after the German crossing of the Rhine in 406/7 AD. He was successful for several years, & gained control of the Roman army of the Rhine & other forces, so he would surely have been able, & willing, to maintain the defences of his British home base, as a place to retreat to if he needed to. His defeat being in the south, on the borders of Italy, meant his troops would not be permitted to return to Britannia. However, continuing troubles on the continent meant the Roman Government was unable to send a replacement administration to the island, & was never able to achieve this. So Britain fell out of the control of Rome by default rather than design, nor were the Romans driven out by angry Britons eager to be freed from the Empire. They were all Romans by this date.

    • @jonimrye5722
      @jonimrye5722  Před 2 měsíci

      You are correct to some degree, but I think Anna points out many of them who had integrated with the Brits remained. The legions that left were ordered back to defend Rome. The point here is that after 410 Britain was no longer controlled by Rome leaving the door open for others to come. It wasnt my intention to give the idea that every single Roman suddenly hopped on a ship and left. Thank you for your comment though, this conversation might explain it for others. Best wishes Jon
