Pregabalin (Lyrica): What You Need To Know

  • Pregabalin (Lyrica) is a medication in the gabapentinoid class. It has anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, and analgesic properties. As such, it's used for epilepsy, neuropathic pain, anxiety, and other conditions.
Despite being a GABA derivative, it doesn't appear to be operating through a GABA-related mechanism.
The substance is also used recreationally due to its euphoric, anxiolytic, and pro-social effects.

merncat75 I was on 75mg 2 x a day,so 150mg daily, years before I was prescribed lyrica I’ve been on antidepressants since November the year of September 11 planes ,twin towers,I stopped living and just exist ever since. Cipramil 2x20mg once at night ,muralax (oxazepam 30mg) 0-2 a day extreme anxiety and ptsd and it’s the only way I can find me or bring me back when I disassociate from me(it’s very complex)lol, and I was also on anti inflammatory medication for my lower back, that was (BRUFEN 200mg) 1 a day. I think I started taking that about maybe 5 months before I started on lyrica then I found out brufen was linked to heart attacks so I stopped taking them,I don’t think I was on brufen when I started lyrica,I’ve been reading the comments and I read antidepressants and lyrica are not good together,I know it was lyrica that made my memory all messed up and my eye sight blurry and I don’t know if this feeling of ice going down my back and the back of my legs and the feeling of being burnt mostly the size of a smoke burning me but sometimes it can be the size of my hand burning like a flame oh and electric shocks i feel at least 2-3 times a week, this could be because the nerve damage I have is from my neck and daily migraines and nerve damage around my elbow. I hope this helps.🙏💞Sorry I don’t think I said how long I was on lyrica to be honest I don’t know or remember exactly how long I was on it but I know it was less than a year.

I made a little change to the TDC website pages. From here on out, particularly for pharmaceuticals, I'm including short "conflict of interest" sections for each paper I talk about. I'll mention if the study was sponsored by a pharmaceutical company or if the authors have some form of connection to a company.
Company-sponsored papers can obviously be useful and are often entirely fine. But the potential for bias exists, so it's worth pointing it out.
A bigger issue is ultimately publication bias and there's not much I can do to address that issue. So, I'll do what I can in terms of highlighting possible conflicts.

I get prescribed lyrica, it's works well and I can move with minimal pain but I do get many side effects. It makes me eat more, I want to drink alcohol when I usually don't, I feel dizzy and it makes me think and act differently. I do like talking to friends on it though and I can string a sentence better than when I'm pain free and soba, it kinda enhances cognitive ability. If I had the choice I wouldn't take it but the pain I experience is extreme and debilitating. I do feel drugged up on it. I usually take 150mg a day but somtimes do 300mg.

I currently live in Thailand and recently went to one of the government hospitals to get consultation for back surgery. Before I left America two and a half years ago a neurologist said I need back surgery to fix the L4, L5, & S1 but I opted out, out of fear, Hind site...LOL! Well with all the doctors and test I went through here in Thailand and although all the other doctors cleared me for surgery the spine surgeon here said that he did not recommend surgery due to my age (70) and medical history (heart disease) and prescribed Brillion 50mg three time daily which helped with the lower back and sciatica pain to a degree but did not stop the pain. I have been on Brillion 50mg for about two months now and thinking about increasing my dosage ever so slightly to see if I can improve its effects. I think this video was very informative and really mirrored the comments made by the spine surgeon here on its effects.

People who like recreational drugs really sleep on pregabalin. It is probably one of the best medications to use for recreational use, it can be addictive but compared to benzo's, opiods and even alcohol it is alot harder to get addicted. The high is best described as the euphoria and sociability that mdma gives first time users, and the anxiety reduction and relaxation associated with benzos like diazapam. This is a great substance and the only thing someone needs to be careful with is mixing it will alcohol, I have had full blackouts mixing it with large amounts of alcohol even when taking it at medical doses

As a professor I don't know if I could continue working if I had to rely only on opioids and/or benzos. I do think it's begun contributing to vision problems over time but that could be just normal aging.

+The drug Classroom I suffer from both a back injury and PTSD from my service in the army with extreme anxiety and panic attacks. I cant take the dozes of Lyrica on an everyday basis? I loose the effect. So I take larger dozes with 2 days without the medication and I also take larger dozes to get my apatite back and to get some sleep. The Veteran service doctor gives me Tramadol, Zopiclone, Xanax and anti depressives. The withdrawal symptoms when I have tried to get rid of the Lyrica is incredible painful. I have it way much easier to stop eating Tramadol or Xanax. I left Afghanistan in 2005 and used morphine and alcohol in the beginning and my doctor refused to give me any other addictive medication for a long time. After many suicide attempts he changed his mind and just asked me "What medication works for you? I can give you anything you feels working for you, cause I cant watch you end up in the statistics of suicidal veterans?"! I wrote a list of dozes of Xanax, Lyrica and Zopiclone which probably could sedate a heard of Elephants?

That fluid retained can also collect around the lungs and cause congestive heart, which it did in our case. Now this is the first I've heard anyone else mention atrial fibrillation so it's got my attention. I've got emphysema, no right pulmonary artery and AF. I need to get off opiates to save my life. Dan Curry it sucks how well gabapentinoids help opiate withdrawal because they block your brains ability to create new synapses, thus making you just as as likely to be an addict. The best way by far is cold turkey, if you have the strength. Get ahold of some shrooms if you need motivation, overkill is the only way you can hurt yourself so don't go over 3 grams. They definitively help mental illness and it's a shame about their reputation.

As someone who's used high levels of gabapentin [3200mg daily/7000+mg recreationally] I can tell you that withdrawal from gabapentin is longer lasting as far as sleep disruption and intense night sweats. I've abused lyrica as well at levels as high as 3000+mg per day and although withdrawals are much worse [flu-like symptoms], they will only last 3-4 days. The addiction potential is very low with lyrica. I'm sober now [from an intense bout with all drugs, but mainly benzodiazepines and amphetamines] and currently studying to be an addiction specialist, while continuing to take Lyrica at levels of 150mg TID. I often forget to dose and have only taken it as prescribed since getting sober. It also has greatly removed any craving, but mostly regarding the desire for alcohol/benzos which makes sense due to GABA activity (even though they differ on the site). I've been watching you since way back. Thanks TDC!

Since you seem to have plenty of experience with the same regimen of substances as myself, I've never been tempted to use my scripts in a purely recreational way. After getting off benzos (with all the fun "brain shocks") Gabapentin and hydros for over two years, my pain levels returned with a vengeance.
I'm now prescribed 150mg Lyrica tid, and 5mg oxy's, up to pid, along with both a muscle relaxant and anti-anxiety med.
I've experienced that feeling of euphoria a few times and am curious if that is the "high" so sought after when looking for alternative uses?
Also, I've noticed a definite flu-like response if I accidentally miss even a single dose of the Lyrica. Sinuses are a real problem when using these in tandem (at least for me), but I've never read in either the printed or online version of warnings and side effects about it.
      Best Regards.

MANY Patients go through HELL due to this controversial view on it, within the medical field. Something NEEDS to be done about that because abrupt use can cause reoccurring seizures and the dreadful 'glutamate storm' which is arguably cause irreversible damage on the brain... Lyrica was a godsent for me. It took me off of any antidepressants, it took away most of my general anxiety, it took away my back pain and it keeps my depression very well in check.
I take 150mg/day but it is a medicine for me, however, i took it recreationally several times out of curiosity and i found out that a good recreational dose is around 600mg at once with mild or no tolerance at all. If you go over 600mg, the side effects like dizziness and drowsiness, impaired motion will be too intense to call it a nice experience so, yeah.To describe the high is very similar to mdma but without the energy and the visual enhancement just the cozy, loving and relaxed feeling with a really strong mental euphoria in the first hour. There is no comedown, it has a pleasent afterglow of general good mood that can last the other day too. Good to know is that pregabalin builds tolerance incredibly fast so basically every other reacreational dose will be significanly less intense so you might wanna use it rarely to enjoy it.
As i said i personally use it daily as medication at a common dose, worked very well for me. The only noticeble side effect in 3 years is weight gain so you might keep in check your diet because you will have increased appetite in time from pregabalin (you will get fat fast if you dont pay attention to it), otherwise nothing negative, i feel way less anxious overall, i'm more empathic (i know for sure that for me it has a mild but welcomed entactogenic effect even at a small common dose), and more relaxed in general both physically and mentally.
If you wanna quit it after a prelonged daily use DO NOT go cold turkey because you will experience bad withdrawal symptoms like headaches, unsettleness and bad migraines that can last for days. Please taper it down, gradually reduce the dosage until you finally quit, take weeks or even a month if necessary dont go cold turkey on it.

I spent around 5 or 6 years on pregabalin whilst waiting for an operation on my neck. The surgeon now refuses to do the operation due to "ongoing other health problems". I asked him about this stuff that he had put me on all those years ago and was told, that, "It's ok, you can continue to have these prescribed each month at 300 mg x 2 per day".
I spoke to my GP and spent the first 3 months or so of this year, whittling the dosage down until I was finally free of the stuff.
Kids, if you wanna get off your face then there are plenty of less harmful things than this awful shite. Months after bein free of it, my head is still clouded to hell. I forget way more stuff than I even hope to remember. Which sounds ok until you start forgetting more important things in your life. Like how to get home!

Yo Seth! So this is kinda a tangent but it's still relevant to pregabalin. One of the primary active constituents in 'Valerian root' is something called valeric acid. Valeric acid is closely related to this class of drugs, as well as drugs like valproate (depakote). I've been taking about 500mg Valerian root 3 times a day and it's been helping with my bipolar disorder. Do you think there is some pharmacology going on there? Or is valeric acid just a precursor and I'm mostly experiencing placebo?

    • @TheDrugClassroom
      @TheDrugClassroom  Před 7 lety +4

I'll have to research valerian more to give a true answer, but from my current understanding the primary actives of valerian might be functioning in a manner that's more directly GABA-related, while pregabalin is based around calcium channels.
Clearly there's some kind of pharmacological action of the substances in valerian. It does have an effect on the body after all.
You could be experiencing placebo, but it might be a real effect.

    • @sethballou9140
      @sethballou9140 Před 6 lety +1

There are several "valerian acids" in valerian root, while there are scant studies the action does seem to work partially in the section of the brain as benzodiazapenes..so GABA mediation is at work here. First Use a Standardized extract for right amount of Active components-usually 4:1 extract.sometimes a mix of powdered herb with the extract works well.Valproate or valproic acid works on the post synaptic actions of GABA so tends to be used in bi-polar disorders, and some scizo-affective disorders so probably has some dopamine blockade activity..there is no evidence for this with valerian root, though it works quite well as a mild anxiolytic-sleep aid.One Herb in Extract form is KAVA KAVA, this is one of the best Natural anti -anxiety herbs available. it's main components are Kava-Lactones, lactones are well known from other plants , but kava probably has its main mediation through at least in part the GABAa receptor, mediates sedation as well..iv'e gone on too long. but hope this adds to discussion. Seth B.

I had a much more detailed post written out however my internet connection is touch and go here for some reason so I'll keep this short and to the point:
I'm currently using Lyrica for acute opioid withdrawals (and have in the past) which I find works very well. I take 300mgs per day, which is the bare minimum dose I find to work. I've heard about it coming with its own set of nasty withdrawals which I definitely don't want to experience which is why I just take the bare minimum and for no longer than 7-10 days (which is about the length of time I would experience the worst of the opioid withdrawals).
I tend to clear out my schedule for approximately 10 days at the very least due to Lyrica causing me to become very dizzy and making my eyes noticeably red. I've been accused of smoking marijana and/or taking other substances due to this. It also causes extreme sedation so I find I cant get much of anything done within those first 7 days at the very least. Even though it does induce drowsiness within me, I do find myself waking up several times.
It also greatly increases my appetite and gives me dry mouth.
I've also heard about it having its own set of very harsh withdrawal symptoms so thats why I keep it to the bare minimum dose required and I dont take it for any more than 10 days.
I've heard about people using it at much higher doses for recreation, however I don't have any interest in it other than its ability to get me through the initial, abject misery of the physical symptoms of opiate withdrawal.
One other effect I've noticed is that it enhances my dreams, making them extremely lucid even at a 300mg dose (which many people have told me is quite a low dose, however these are the same people who are taking upwards of 900mgs to achieve recreational effects.
If I think of anything else I will write edit this post.

It HAS improved my quality of life, I was suffering with severe nerve pain. I’m almost 53 & ok with the fact I’m gonna be on it for life. I didn't. It's mentioned in the video and is discussed in more detail on the linked TDC page.
From video: "For people who are dependent on drugs like alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids, pregabalin might be helpful. Some evidence suggests it can reduce withdrawal symptoms and even reduce craving."

I had a pinched nerve in my back and the pain even with percocet and vicodin was so great I was contemplating suicide, solely due to the pain. I am quite strong minded but I was about to give up hope getting relief. I took one Lyrica capsule from a blister pack and my pain was COMPLETELY GONE it was an answer to my prayers. This is the most amazing drug in the world if you have nerve pain. It made me crazy though I had extreme anxiety and pretty bad paranoia. I took it only until surgery, I didnt have any desire to abuse it.

It also has negatives. Such as being so deep asleep your "I need a pee" waking fails to happen. What does happen is 15 minutes later your "There is something wrong with the bed" waking works. Then you find wet boxers and a patch of bed wetting. I had a week of this every night, by the end, my wife and I went from me very upset and her calming me down, to both getting up she changes the sheets and duvet cover and puts the one the absorbent puppy pads down. I got my ass into the shower and then took the soiled stuff down to the washing machine. Amazing how quickly you automated things! By the end, we didn't say a word until it was all sorted, and then we resumed the conversation we were having before dropping off. That was me dropping off mid-word.
